About
OVERVIEW
Spanning over 45-years, Stay Alive My Son (SAMS) is a groundbreaking virtual reality odyssey where you are transported into the life of Yathay Pin, a survivor of the Cambodian genocide to witness the world through his eyes, where every decision you make unfolds his poignant story of family separation, survival, and resilience. This narrative is based on the true events described in Yathay Pin's compelling novel Tu Vivras Mon Fils (Stay Alive My Son), making every moment of the game an authentic dive into history.
Made by a small team with purpose, SAMS is more than an experience through the life of one man; it's a bridge to the past, an exploration of the depths of human endurance, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of love and the essence of what it means to persevere, to forgive, and to heal.
Honored with the Producers' Guild Innovation Award and five Telly Awards for breaking new ground in storytelling, SAMS revolutionized cinema history by creating a new genre in filmmaking called “Cineplay.” This genre merges cinematic storytelling with interactivity, allowing you to live the life of a real person with a deeply human and emotive narrative. By pioneering a hyper-realistic digital representation of Yathay and integrating volumetric capture of real actors, SAMS brings Yathay and his family to life inside the game engine, enabling you to relive key moments leading to his family's separation and his quest for atonement.
THE EXPERIENCE
Your journey begins outside Yathay’s home, where you meet an eighty-eight-year-old man, brought to life with a hyper-realistic digital human powered by AI. As light gameplay mechanics guide your path, you delve deeper into the psyche of a father haunted by choices from his past. In a ceremonial rite that intertwines your fate with his, your hands become his; you see the world through his eyes; his memories and dilemmas flood your consciousness. In a surreal twist reminiscent of "Alice in Wonderland," you plunge into the depths of his memories, initiating a quest for redemption and understanding.
Navigate the cavernous labyrinthine symbolizing the recesses of Yathay’s mind to uncover the rich history of Cambodia and confront the moments and decisions that have defined Yathay's life leading to his family's separation and abandonment of his six-year-old son, Nawath. Relive the powerful moments that shaped his existence, feeling decades of sorrow and the relentless anguish of not knowing his son's fate.
Taken on a mythical branch, your odyssey culminates in the mystical echoes of Angkor Wat, a metaphorical beacon in the darkness of Yathay’s journey. Here, in the candle lit sanctuary, you'll uncover the final, elusive memory. It's in this moment of revelation that Yathay's unyielding spirit shines brightest, revealing a tale of enduring love and the transformative power of forgiveness.
OUR TEAM
With limited resources and taking over 5 years in the making, a dedicated team of nine artists who were passionate about storytelling, aspired to shape society and culture through technology by delivering an immersive experience with a mission to change the modern day narrative of family separation into one of reunification through a profound, life-altering journey of the heart, made with heart.
Carrying PC's and VR headsets in suitcases, we traveled relentlessly across continents to screen SAMS in over 25 countries and to share this true story with thousands of audiences, technologists, policymakers, NGO's, and Heads of State in an effort to humanize the trauma of family separation and urge people to join our mission to educate, empower, and reunite modern day families torn by conflict. By joining us on our journey to bring this powerful story and mission to wider audiences globally, your support is not only for this project, but a movement of change for these families. Your support serves as a beacon of hope amongst hopelessness, love in hate, and light against the darkness. We thank you!

p.s. We know many of you do not have headsets and would like a desktop version. Due to our limited resources, it was only possible to make it in VR and we also felt this would be the most powerful use of the medium. But, we are listening and will find a way to bring SAMS to you! We also dropped the price to help spread the story. Please know, we are doing our best to find the funds to convert this project for desktop, albeit with some adjustment, and will continue to listen to your feedback because you and this community is our backbone.

This was my first VR experience and I was really impressed by the difference it made to experience the story line in this way. I was impressed by the mechanics and the initial part of the story helped ease into the experience of being in a game/movie. It was an eye opening and educational experience and I loved the inclusion of real life events/history
This experience is an absolute must. The game tells a heart-wrenching story about a father's fight to find his son during the Cambodian genocide. The narrative is gripping and beautifully told, making you feel every bit of the protagonist's pain and hope, and the visuals are some of the best of the best in VR, with some scenes that are genuinely mind blowing. It has won some major awards and it is very well deserved. Absolutely recommend this to anyone and everyone who loves a good story. It's a powerful experience that will stay with you long after you finish!

I was in it from the very start. The hyper-realistic digital human of Yathay is impressive, but it’s the emotional depth of the story that truly stands out. The light gameplay mechanics are intuitive and enhance the narrative without being inauthentic to the story so I was never taken out of the emotion. As you explore the world and dive into the story further, you are transported to the darkest corners of his past, feeling the weight of his decisions and the pain of his separation from his son. Beautiful, touching and very real.
In a world where we are overwhelmed with new content and technology that is ever changing, Stay Alive My Son is truly a game changer (no pun intended). From the insane detailed graphics to the emotionally charged story telling of this man's life, every second of this experience had me gasping and in awe. Congratulations to the team of creatives behind such groundbreaking stuff! Caaaaaaaant wait for their next story.
honestly one of the best story driven expiriences on vr out there, to the graphics, atmospehre, sound design and writting its an amazing vr expirience and i hope to see more like this in the future.
Stay Alive My Son is an incredibly touching experience that really pulls at the heart strings. It's all about survival during war, and the story just sucks you in. The graphics are so real, and you really feel like you're right there with the father and son as they struggle to survive. The experience's attention to detail and the way it tells the story is just top-notch. If you're looking for an experience with a deep, emotional storyline that will stick with you, this is the one. Highly recommended for an unforgettable experience!
One of, if not the most, impressively produced VR "short film"/experiences I've seen. We take a journey through a man's mind and are immersed not only in the historical memories of his family during the Cambodian genocide, but also how he comes to terms with his past on a spiritual level. Coming across experiences like this always remind me how unexplored and underutilized VR is as a narrative art form. Note that the game seems to by default only works for Meta devices, but you can add the "-HMD=OpenXR" launch option to get it working with other headsets (I needed to add this for my Beyond + Index knuckles to work). Also, performance was rough even on my 4090, but I lived with it.
Stay Alive My Son is an absolute VR masterpiece! As a gamer, I've never seen anything like it. The digital characters are incredibly lifelike, pulling you deep into the story of Pin Yathay's survival during the Cambodian genocide. The first-person perspective makes you feel like you are actually Yathay himself. You get to explore, interact, and make choices that impact the narrative, giving you a strong sense of agency and connection. Visually, it’s stunning. The hyper-realistic environments and great sound design create a fully immersive experience. Every scene is emotionally gripping and beautifully crafted. Stay Alive My Son sets a new bar for VR storytelling. If you love immersive experiences, you have to check this out. It’s unforgettable.
As someone new to VR, I wasn't sure what to expect from Stay Alive My Son, but I was completely blown away. This experience is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. It’s based on the true story of Pin Yathay and his survival during the Cambodian genocide, and it pulls you right into the heart of his journey. The realism is incredible. The characters look and move so naturally. You feel like you're standing right there with them, experiencing every emotion and struggle. The first-person perspective makes it feel even more personal and immersive. This made me feel more connected to the experience and really brought the story to life in a powerful way. t’s an unforgettable experience that even for a newcomer like me it is clear that it sets a high standard for VR storytelling. Highly recommended.
"Stay Alive My Son" hit me harder than I expected. Living in Greece, we see the news about refugees and families separated along the coastline all the time. You see the pictures, hear the stories, but it's easy to feel disconnected, especially even now where conflict and war seems to be everywhere…and it breaks my heart for these families… these families! "Stay Alive My Son" though, ripped my heart out and made me feel it. The desperation of the father, the fear for his son, the constant struggle for survival... It's all too real, echoing the stories we see every day. And when the inevitable happens, when you are forced to make impossible choices with heartbreaking consequences, it's like a punch to the gut. "Stay Alive My Son" isn't just a game, it's a window into a reality most of us can only imagine, and it's left me deeply affected. So if you’re looking for an experience that is more than just mindless action, but with real heart, craft, and meaning, you must experience this story.!”
