good gaym
I played the original way back in the day. I haven't touched it again until this remake. The remake is quite well done. That said, the game is still showing its age in departments past the visuals. The story, VA, and characters are charming. However, don't expect anything past being very simple. There are times when the game can make me laugh with its charm, but there are more times when the writing is just way too simple and bland. I say that, but I can still feel the passion that went behind the original creation process. There is love and care here which I can appreciate. The battle system is fun and you can certainly do neat things with the crafting systems, items, formations, team comps, etc. I played the game primarily on UNIVERSE mode. Not sure I'll bother to play the post game content though. Overall a blast from the past that has enough flaws that I would say be weary of picking up if you don't already know what you are getting into.

I want to start this with the only criticism I have; I don't like that I can't turn off voice overs without just turning off voices completely...I like having the call-outs during battle but the voices overs during dialogue bother me and kind of ruin the feel of a classic rpg. ALL of that being said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!!! All the polishing, quality of life changes, and the additions have all been amazing so far as I near the end of what would have been "disk 1" Star Ocean 2 became my most favorite game when I picked it up for the first time in 1999, and this remaster has only re-kindled that. Thank you, it has been healing to travel back in time here, to be in touch with my 14 year old self again.

Star Ocean The Second Story R ist ein herausragendes Remake, das zeigt, wie man einen Klassiker modernisiert, ohne seinen Charme zu verlieren. Die Mischung aus wunderschönem 2.5D-Artstyle, dynamischen Kämpfen und einer packenden Story sorgt dafür, dass man von Anfang bis Ende komplett gefesselt wird. Besonders beeindruckend ist, wie flüssig und spannend das Kampfsystem umgesetzt wurde – schnell, taktisch und unglaublich befriedigend. Auch die Charaktere sind tiefgründig und liebevoll gestaltet, sodass man emotional richtig in die Welt eintaucht. Die vielen Entscheidungen, Pfade und Private Actions motivieren dazu, mehrfach zu spielen und jedes Detail zu entdecken. Der Soundtrack ist ein absolutes Highlight und bringt sowohl Nostalgie als auch frische Energie in das Abenteuer. Insgesamt ist Star Ocean The Second Story R ein Must-Play für JRPG-Fans und eines der besten Remakes der letzten Jahre. Eine klare Empfehlung!
A remaster to the 1998 version. Has both English and Japanese voiceovers. If you like the Tales Series but want a Sci-fi twist to it, you will enjoy this game. The story liking is personal preference whether if you like it or not.
Great RPG. Nostalgic and one of my favorites growing up. My only gripe, which seems to be a common one, is once you get to nede, the story kind of falls off. Its not bad but it falls victim to convoluted jrpg stories that japanese devs cant quite ever get rid of. Its still fun to play and eventually break with strong builds after your first playthrough. If you end up going for all 99 endings like I did, its quite easy and takes about an hour / 2 hours per run when youre beefed up. But if you dont want to, dont worry youre not missing much in terms of endings. Theyre all relatively short and variations of the same. However I do recommend getting Claude and Rena 1-3.
