5.
Restory Retro

I have some mixed feelings about Staffer Retro. It's not a bad game by any means, but it takes a slightly different direction from Staffer Case. In Staffer Case, we investigate crime scenes and murders. Staffer Retro, however, feels more like we are solving puzzles rather than investigating a case. I can understand why, since Staffer Retro doesn't follow the main storyline directly. It is still part of the story, but it focuses on characters who will eventually become part of the main storyline. Because of that, Staffer Retro focuses more on progressing the main story and developing its characters rather than solving murder mysteries. I think this change in focus is ultimately why I wasn't as invested in Retro as much as I wanted to like in Staffer Case. In Staffer Case, the mysteries themselves were what pulled me in. The setup would leave me with missing pieces that I had to put together, and I genuinely enjoyed trying to figure out what had happened before the main character had their lightbulb moment. In Retro, I felt like the information was presented to me much more directly. The cases felt more like puzzles that I had to solve rather than mysteries where I had to reconstruct a sequence of events from missing information. Because of that, I didn't feel quite as mentally stimulated or invested in the cases. I'm not entirely sure how much of this is the game and how much is just me, though. There were still some moments where I completely missed what the game was getting at, and I wouldn't necessarily call the game easy. I just felt that the mystery setups were weaker compared to Staffer Case, and as a result, I didn't have the same urge to piece everything together myself. That said, Case 3 was super well done, just phenomenal. It genuinely made me disgusted, and it was easily one of my favorite parts of the game. The epilogue chapter was also fantastic, when I realized I was staring at it right in the face the whole time. I really enjoyed the characters as well. I loved their personalities, their development, and the way they carried themselves throughout the story. The character art and animations are also incredibly pristine. The music is beautiful and fits the game's setting very well. Like Staffer Case, the game still suffers from some ambiguous wording. There were times when I wasn't sure what the game wanted me to present when combining evidence. However, this was significantly less of a problem here than it was in the previous game. It only happened about twice, so it's a major improvement. I also didn't have quite the same emotional attachment to Retro that I had with Staffer Case. That's not necessarily a criticism of Retro's characters, since I still really enjoyed them. Staffer Case just gave me a much more personal reason to care about what happened next. I was interested in Verita's story, but I wasn't nearly as emotionally invested. Overall, I enjoyed Staffer Retro, but it wasn't quite the Staffer sequel I was waiting for. I personally hope the next Staffer game can steer its direction a little more towards the original Staffer Case formula, because that's what made me fall in love with the series in the first place. That said, I don't want this to come across as dismissing what Staffer Retro is trying to do. Its story, characters, presentation, and character development are all things I enjoyed. I just hope the next game puts the mystery and deduction side of Staffer back in the foreground.
