An excellent game from a great studio I did not need another reason to hate Microsoft but I have one. Hope this studio can be saved.
In my opinion, it's a small masterpiece. The graphics are beautiful and the soundtrack is truly captivating. It reminded me of some old fairy tales, and I think that's intentional, with some references to Alice in Wonderland, for example. It's worth the full price, and the game has a long lifespan. Perhaps playing with a gamepad is a little easier than with a mouse and keyboard. My rating is 8/10

My review page. Follow me on twitch!
The gist of it:
I have really mixed feelings about South of Midnight, on one hand, it doesn't really do anything super bad, but on the other hand, it doesn't do anything super good either. The first half of the game had charm and felt unique, but from mid towards end game, the game becomes a boring slog. 👍 The good parts: +Good music at least for the first few hours +Lovely atmosphere 👎The bad parts: -Garbage combat and boring platforming -Boring ending
Story
You play as Hazel, a young woman who gets placed into some sort of South American fantasy folklore while trying to rescue her mother. In the first few hours, you're treated to some very sad/disturbing stories that happened around the area you live in, and as you gain the powers of a weaver, you're tasked with liberating the poor souls trapped in endless torment. As I said, initially the story starts really well, I was enjoying the different stories you encountered on your journey, but around the halfway point, the story becomes extremely predictable and filler-like, as if they were trying to postpone the game length as much as they could. Then the game just ends in the most predictable, boring, and safe end you could possibly think of. It's like they completely forgot that the first half of the game was a tragedy with morals. Aside from the fish, I really did not connect with any of the characters. I did enjoy the tale of the two brothers a lot, that was pretty much the highlight of the entire game. Story rating: 6/10
Gameplay
Let me just warn you from the start, if gameplay matters to you in the games you play, stay away from this. I'm not joking when I say the combat bored me so much that I was getting sleepy playing the game at times. The combat is basically a hack-and-slash with a dash of limited skills, which doesn't sound super bad, it's not, but the way it's designed makes it much worse. Essentially, the entire game is press forward, do some basic platforming, watch some cutscenes, and drop into the exact same copy-pasted arena with the exact same type of enemies and repeat it 200 times. Luckily, the first few boss fights do spice things up, and I enjoyed them, but then they drop the ball hard and completely ruin them as well, with the final boss being an absolute lazy trash of forcing you to fight the same basic enemies you fought a million times over and over. Platforming is also as basic as it gets, you have variety, but it never truly becomes challenging at all. It's super on rails, just to guide you from one point to another and at times for collecting the most boring collectables ever invented, which are sadly mandatory to upgrade your skills. Gameplay rating: 6/10
Audio
The voice acting was really good, especially from all the side characters and especially the fish dude. Then they just kinda drop him from the story, and the game goes downhill, as with everything else. The music suffers the same issue as well, the first songs are truly amazing and felt absolutely perfect with the tone of the story until they no longer do. The sound effects were fine. Audio rating: 8/10
Graphics, performance and tech analysis
The game runs well considering the engine, had no issues with performance, nor any bugs whatsoever. The atmosphere is great for the majority of the game, with nice locations you end up in visually, and the design of the important npc's were really great, except the basic enemies you fight, they were poorly done and completely out of place. The level design was sadly very basic and linear for the most part, with few side-paths available to explore. Graphics, performance, and tech analysis score: 7.5/10
Conclusion
It's a mixed game overall, an adventure game you probably will never remember, and considering the absurd price, you're better off playing something else. Only recommended at a super cheap price.
Final score: 6.8/10
This is the first game that’s moved me so much that I needed to write a review. The story, the music, the graphics and animation are all beautiful. It’s made me cry more than once for both sadness and joy. Just play it.
Everyone's already said it, but it bears - no, demands repeating: The game is absolutely gorgeous. The art style, the music, the storytelling, the characters, all of it is beautiful, and complemented by the platforming gameplay and (to an extent) even the combat. Hazel is a very likeable character. She's witty, sassy, determined, but also kind and empathetic. ... Sometimes she is a bit dense
(one specific, glaring example being Huggin' Molly, where to me it seemed obvious that she was helping while Hazel was convinced she was a villain)
but I think the plot explains that well enough
(again, regarding Huggin' Molly, Hazel was terrified for her mother and misinterpreted certain things)
. All the supporting characters, even the antagonistic ones, have layers their own motivations, some of which make them relatable despite perhaps not being likeable. Boss fights are unique and interesting, except for the very last one which is a bit of a let-down. Other combat encounters are fine, but they start to feel repetitive after a while. This isn't a problem since they're not very difficult and the game has an option to just skip combat altogether, and the platforming still adds engaging gameplay to the narrative. There are also a fair amount of hidden goodies and readables (for more backstory) to find through exploration. The whole game is very atmospheric in its different environments and that is perfectly underlined by the amazing soundtrack. I particularly enjoyed the unique theme songs for each boss. Words can hardly do this game and the experience of playing it justice, so this is a very enthusiastic recommendation.
South of Midnight is a beautifully crafted adventure game with a strong focus on atmosphere and storytelling. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Southern Gothic charm! The stunning claymation art style, incredible soundtrack by Olivier DeRivier, and deeply emotional story are all highlights. It offers some comprehensive accessible options too allowing players to adjust the difficulty or gameplay aspects to suit their needs. Meaning you can breeze through combat if you prefer to soak up the lore and scenery. Speaking of which, the combat can feel a repetitive and a little basic compared to other aspects of the game, but isn’t overly frustrating. I did also notice the framerate can be considerably unstable at times, seemingly for no reason - it'll bounce all over the place (between 100+ and 30 fps regularly) which was unfortunate as it really does put a blemish on what is otherwise, an optimised game. Overall: A wonderfully immersive experience and perfect for those who prioritise narrative and atmosphere over intense action. It doesn't overstay its welcome and its impactful journey stands out thanks to its unique setting and artistic presentation. Highly recommended.
Great game. An excellent linear story game, the collectibles are all reasonably attainable (albeit you may want a guide if you retry for 100% achievements). There's one very painful achievement because no hitting a particular boss is an awful experience, though playing normally is completely fine. A strong game I'd recommend for a lot of people. Combat can be a bit underwhelming or feel random at times, but it's more than made up for by a significant number of quality of life features and a great story, compelling characters and it's honestly just good.
This is the sort of game we don't get any more, great story telling, visual style, characters etc. Yes its pretty linear but that is not a bad thing, not every game has to be open world and this game does not need an open world. As others have said, the combat becomes quite tedious but they have added an option to skip these battles so there's that. Great soundtrack as well, not something i would listen to myself but in context...very fitting
Such a phenomenal story, beautifully written and the art of this game really drives it home. I immediately need more games like this. I also love the "there's truth behind all folklore". I'm not great at combat but I do like the thrill so I played on easy mode. I thankfully only died to doing stupid stuff on obstacles, not within combat. My only qualm with this game is you have to be really close for the inspect button to pop up and I did miss a lot of readables and the dialogue based on them because they're very hard to find. Same goes for the Floofs, I love the little obstacles to get to them, but they are hard to find the correct way there.
This is a very cute game with fantastic artwork and music. I really have been enjoying the story so far and the setting is really great. If you enjoy southern/creole folklore you will enjoy this game!
