Still a good game to this day, allow me to break it down a bit. Story: It is a light-hearted comedy. Revolving around the main who got suspended after things going wrong with their exam. It takes on a more simple tone, with her trying to save Smile Curry from a new more established curry restaurant. Hence how it gets into her seeking after the legendary ingredients to make the Legendary Magic Curry. The story is more funny than anything, and can be more easy going but also a bit deeper at times. The characters are likable, due to their contrast that compliments each other well. Battle Mechnics: This is a dungeon crawler, and a rogue game. Every dungeon your level resets to 1, and if you lose, you lose all items and money, except for the equipped weapon and shield. There is magic which becomes important the deeper you go. Effectively using items is important as well. If Kuu faints, you cannot move on until he is back up and going. I should mention, if you lose. There is an item to prevent loss of items. You can also use Transport to leave the dungeon with everything. At some point, you can escape the dungeon with everything as well. Another thing to note, leveling weapon and shield is important. These will scale to your level, but the higher your level, the higher the multiplier. So while the system is simple, there is enough to keep engaged. Including making curry to get some boosts. Side Stuff: You can view skits by collecting key items at the library, these are fun plays and you get some good stuff for viewing it. There is also missions to unlock costumes. Music: This game has amazing music, especially Battle Flavour. The standard boss song, and Impetuous Tidings, the last boss song. For a comedy, they really know how to land a good experience. Weapons and Armor: By using weapons and armor, you can level them up to unlock more slots. These slots you can fuse the equipment into other ones to transfer perks. These becomes important to progress. You can also enhance the level of the equipment as well. Either through Kuu's random skill or at your room when it is unlocked. Overall: This is an amazing game. From the entertaining story, mechanics, music, etc. It might be a bit difficult at first, but as it goes along it does get easier. I should mention one more thing, when you lose the first time. You unlock an easy tower to get some stuff, this is like a lifeline.

Pretty decent! The music is exceptionally good, btw, there's a lot of vocal songs and they all sound really good, my personal favorite is the Town theme. Give it a listen. Compile Heart always makes the most jank games ever, but the genre is "grid-based top-down perspective randomly generated dungeon crawl game", there's no way you could mess it up except for the difficulty. And as someone that has beaten Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky before, boy, THIS game is even harder than that sometimes. Always starting at level 1 at the start of every dungeon, losing a lot of stuff if you die, that's pretty brutal. ^^' So only play this if you can deal with that difficulty, and maybe have played one of the harder PMD games before... and also only play this if you're fine with other Compile Heart games' content. This game has scenarios and visuals that are definitely not for everyone. xD Uhm, also, porting people, please add Japanese text into this port, I don't know why that's missing in the first place...
I explored a forest and collected some stuff. The controls were kind of janky, you need to hold a button to be able to move diagonally, there's a little monster guy that follows you around and loses health with each step, which is more of an annoyance than a help, especially when he gets in the way. I reached a cave, but my companion was hungry and I had nothing left to feed it. The game told me if it passes out from hunger I'd lose, so I went back to town. Arriving back in town, all my stuff was gone... Maybe I missed the part of the tutorial that told me this but, why does it work that way? It's not like I got knocked out and dropped the stuff... Tried again, this time making sure to not waste time exploring (because who wants to explore in a dungeon crawler?). Made it back to the cave, this time companion was well fed. Progressed around 4 floors before game crashed and all progress was lost. Uninstalled.
This game is extremely underrated! The parodied characters (Rulue = Cliora, Gigadis = Satan, etc) are a lot closer to their counterparts' original personalities than they are in the modern Puyo games, which is kinda funny!! Unfortunate that Compile's characters couldn't make an appearance, but I think what we got is more than serviceable. The writing is some of my favorite out of all the Compile Heart games I've played so far, it's charming, hilarious, and if you look past the setting and characters being different, it definitely pays homage to the original Madou Monogatari series when it can. The gameplay, while not as complex as other mystery dungeon games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and void* tRrLM, is still pretty fun. A lot of mechanics aren't explained very well (or at all!), but once you understand them they're fun to play around with. I especially enjoyed combining items with the Giant Kuu, that, as well the ID scrolls, makes the gameplay feel a lot more personable and customizable despite how otherwise RNG-based it is. The curry mechanic is pretty frustrating, as you could get cursed curry for no fault of your own, which I did, A LOT, and it doesn't make sense for the mechanic that is the namesake of the game to be so inconsistent and underwhelming. Sorry for the unorganized review i dont usually do reviews
It is a roguelike game. The gameplay is somehow ok.
If you're curious about Mystery Dungeon-style roguelikes, this isn't a bad place to start. It's very cutscene-heavy (more than it needs to be, really, even for a comedy), but as far as the core gameplay goes, it's slightly more forgiving than others in the genre. The main reason why I say this is because of the hunger mechanic, which takes the form of Kuu's "Kindness" meter here. As in other Mystery Dungeons, this meter will gradually deplete, but instead of killing you when it's completely empty, instead, you'll merely be unable to leave the floor until Kuu is revived. On top of that, Kuu can eat anything, with varying results, so keeping this meter full isn't much of a problem. The most dangerous aspect of this meter is that once it lowers to a certain point, Kuu will start deliberately attracting monsters. There are a few other things that help lower the difficulty as well, such as designated escape floors and inventory preservation items. Other than those, this is more or less your standard Mystery Dungeon clone: hard inventory limits, randomly-generated floors, rudimentary crafting, and so on. This isn't as good as the actual Mystery Dungeon/Shiren games, or even other clones like Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded, but it's decent enough, and also not all that long, optional dungeons notwithstanding. As a reboot of sorts for the main Sorcery Saga (aka Madou Monogatari) series, it's also an interesting historical curiosity; as other reviewers have noted, this is the series that Puyo Puyo was spun off from a few decades ago. This isn't a must-play for experienced Mystery Dungeon fans, though it should keep you amused for a little while. Despite the lowered difficulty, it's still possible to make dumb mistakes and have to start a dungeon all over again. The graphics are fine, though the music and sound effects are so-so, the former sounding like a poor man's Tenpei Sato (famed Nippon Ichi Software composer). Not too shabby overall.
- Nice enough to play for fun, rating 82/100
TLDR; Game's cute, but the gameplay is the worst thing I have ever experienced in my entire gaming career oh my god... I would not touch this game with a TWENTY FOOT POLE if I was held at gunpoint over it. But I am still going to talk about what I like and don't like about the game in case someone wants to play it. Despite it probably being the worst game I have ever played, and ever will play. I am perhaps, one of THE MOST passionate people about the series of Sorcery Saga/Madou Monogatari and the Puyo Puyo franchise. I have played a ton of the old Compile games, read a few of the mangas, engage with the new Sega stuff, and even try to translate when and what I can. As soon as I found out this game existed, in English, and was for sale I was ecstatic! However, the gameplay of this game is GENUINELY SO HELLISH I come back to it every once and again wondering why I ever quit and play it for around 30 minutes to an hour before remembering exactly why I put it down to begin with. For starters, it's a mystery dungeon game, which isn't bad, I find the genre to be quite exciting and fun! You never know what to expect with the next floor! Awesome! But when you have this annoying pet following you around the whole time and can't ever feed the thing and it gets mad and attracts enemies when you don't feed it, that gets irritating. Especially considering you can't enter the next floor without it, making it often MORE EFFICIENT to let the thing starve to death until you're planning on leaving, and only THEN do you feed it so you can continue onwards. It absorbs damage for you and can attack enemies as well, but that goes to its hunger bar instead of health (since the health bar counts as the hunger bar) as a separate issue. Even if you do somehow manage to face Kuu the creature pet thing to feed it, you're allowed to feed it anything in your inventory from old weapons to random food ingredients. But some of them actually worsen its health, so you need to be careful in what you think will bring it back versus kill it. So it all loops back around to being a useless and difficult to manage mechanic that makes the gameplay overall more miserable. What's more is that it's a roguelite/like (I'm not clear on the distinction between the two) so if you die, you lose all your items, money, and floor progress. Which in itself isn't horrible, I consider myself to enjoy games like that. However, there are SO MANY FLOORS to each tower, that it makes it very easy to spend hours NOT EVEN PROGRESSING IN THE STORY. You could spend your resources and money in game to upgrade a shield and weapon you got from a previous attempt at a tower, only to lose it as soon as you go back in because you couldn't get away from an enemy for restarting at level 1 every time you enter a tower. EVEN IF YOU GOT OUT ALIVE THE PREVIOUS ATTEMPT. Genuinely feel like Sisyphus trying to push the boulder with this game. There's also the mechanic that you can't see what any kind of equipment is before equipping it, it is only after the fact that you can see the stats on them. This mechanic only bugs me out, because there is a chance the weapon or shield you've equipped has a curse, which permanently binds it to you until you die. Meaning you could get stuck with the worst weapon you've ever seen, right before the big boss at the end if you're not careful. Combined with knowing that this game gets rid of all your progress can be disheartening with the added fact of potentially getting stuck with the worst equipment known to man is absolutely soul crushing. Of course I will keep dragging my boulder up the hill, as is my mission for several reasons but it is difficult. Do not. Touch this game. Unless you are already a diehard fan of the Puyo Madou franchise. It would be a waste of time, a waste of money, and I think you would walk away feeling enraged. It is so much easier to watch the story on Youtube, and would absolutely spare you some time and energy. I could tear into this game for ages. That said, if you are considering buying the game because you ARE a diehard fan of the Puyo Madou franchise, there are a few things that ARE actually good about the game I could lend you to aid you in your quest. 1. I didn't hate the music. I think that the soundtrack to this game is actually delightful, there are several songs I listen to in my free time, like the intro music (and Gigadis' theme but that is more because it makes me laugh more than it sounds good) it's a pretty good set of music to vibe with. 2. The characters and story are genuinely cute and silly. Granted, it's not the Puyo Madou a hardcore fan knows and loves, but the characters are equally as fun and silly and it's clear there's some resemblance to characters from the original series! If you're looking for some old Compile humor and similar vibes, this is the place to look! Gigadis I would describe as their equivalent to Satan, and Zeo as Schezo! Pupuru and Kuu are definitely pretty similar to Arle and Carbuncle ! 3. Visuals & art Game doesn't suck to look at! Which is good... I think the art of the game is soooo super cute! It even reminds me of some of the art from the older Puyo games like Sun!! Their chibis from the intro vid are so adorbs as well Other than that... uhh it's a bit rough... but you're welcome to grin and bear it if you really really feel like it. Just know you have been warned. And if you do manage to like it, good for you! Everyone has their own interests, and this review is only my opinion. Congrats if you actually made it this far into my review. Hope both sides of your pillow are cold tonight!
The game starts fragmenting and crashing near floor 12 of the volcano dungeon in chapter 2, physically unplayable
