TL;DR: This game is what happens when you have brilliant art direction but only a middling understanding of game design. It's the most borderline thumbs up I've ever given any title. I adore these kinds of games. I have been playing them since 1997. Let's go from the worst parts of this game to its best: The little shrines, dozens of them, sometimes a hundred of them, that dot the map, and give your commanders ("wielders") permanent bonuses that even carry between story missions: oh boy these things suck. For semi-perfectionists like me, it is a micromanagement hell. While not everyone may be as pathologically neuro-divergent as I apparently am, for me it's supremely frustrating. There's not even a button to highlight or make more easily visible shrines that a selected hero has yet to visit. All this gorgeous UX, and any kind overlay or minimap highlights or whatever else just are not present. And then, even worse, there are locations/shrines that can be totally wasted because you didn't have the magic foresight enough to know to not pick an ability because six seconds later a shrine would have given it to you for free, but now you can go ♥♥♥♥ yourself. The customization of your heroes is fun, the equipment system is fun, but there ends up being just too much to do for too little pay-off. It's too annoying to move equipment around. Age of Wonders I or II, I forget which, both ~25 years old, let you spend resources to teleport items between heroes, as have other games. It costs you something, sure, but you don't have to click next turn 4 times while your heroes walk toward one another. Where is such simple QoL in this game when others have had it for two and a half decades? The fact that hero abilities are drawn randomly and then you get to pick from a small pool (3) is also a flatly silly idea. What if my magic wielder draws only melee abilities to choose from due to RNG for three level ups in a row? Well, ♥♥♥♥ you, I guess, that's what. All of the above together means that by the time you get 3, or ESPECIALLY 4+, heroes walking around, it just feels like an unholy slog. I have zero desire to increase the difficulty past normal (Fair), because all that would be doing is increasing the amount of micromanagement I the player would constantly have to do. There is no extra challenge, no joy, just a tax on your limited hours of life remaining preventing you from spending them on something you enjoy before you inevitably die. Combat is... yeah okay. You get the hang of it, and then it is what it is. It's not a negative, but it's not a positive. The magic system can be a bit bonkers (both for and against you), but in single player games this is all in good fun, and it's pleasantly simple with enough depth to keep it engaging. I did one of the factions' story lines (Brother Ratman is cool by me). It was pretty alright. There's even some little musical numbers, appropriate for the title, between the missions, along with their own cutscene artworks. In my old age I'm liking this kind of thing a lot. The empire-building and progression is minimal but in the best possible way. It's got everything you need, and not a bit more. They nailed this part, to their credit. This being said, due to the game's other weaknesses described above, the thought of managing a larger, more advanced empire makes me feel sad that this also means having to tolerate the multiple armies such a thing could support and be required to defend it. Blegh. The graphics are fun. There's this weird blurring and delayed darkening/brightening that happens when you zoom around which I don't care for, but otherwise the game is gorgeous. All in all, they got really close with this game, and I hope they (or someone else) is tempted to try again, which is why it gets the weakest thumbs up possible to give, but it just is the case that they missed the mark. It's annoying how close it is to being so much better. 93% of a fantastic game is here, then they flubbed that last 7% so badly that they made their game merely medicore. Only buy it if you're very nostalgic for the olden days, especially because in many ways, you're regressing to gameplay friction that mostly stopped existing at the end of the 90s. edit-typos

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

It's fine if you want a standard HoMMlike. This genre has been stagnated for almost 2 decades now. My preference was the Age of Wonders branch of HoMMlikes, but the latest entries are meh. Unfortunately SoC lacks Global/World magic which makes the overworld gameplay even less interesting. Played through one campaign. It entirely boils down to wandering around picking up loot, clearing stationary creeps, playing whack-a-mole with enemy armies popping out of the fog of war 1-2 turns from one of your towns while pushing your battlefront forward. It was okay, but unfortunately it doesn't do anything to elevate the genre. Most hardcore hommlike players focus on skirmishes & possibly multiplayer, but I've always been more of a campaign & occasional multiplayer guy. The campaigns in early AoW games were solid fun & had nice vibes & decent narrative setups. Not the case with SoC. Boring Campaign Missions Clearly not the focus of their efforts... or they simply lack the understanding of how to setup a narrative properly within a strategy game. Little attention is paid to building tension, anticipation, setting interesting goals or cultivating mystery. In the 4 missions I played, there are no unique scenario designs as exists in other TBS and RTS mission designs. They don't even hit any of the old classics of "hold out until day X" or "survive in the wildness while gathering a ragtag army". Compared to games like Shadow Magic, Battle for Wesnoth, Starcraft/Warcraft, the campaign mission design (for the 4 I played at least) is little more than skirmishes with some characters yapping at each other pasted over it. Bland Heroes Heroes are mostly undifferentiated at least in the Human + Fay campaign I played other than a bias toward a spell school & a bias toward melee, ranged, or magic. But these are minor differences in how they play. Bland Items Devs seem terrified of making an interesting item as basically every one I encountered is just +stats. Yea I get it, balancing for skirmish/MP is hard with interesting items, but in the campaign you couldn't let yourself off the leash? Come on. Weak Magic I honestly just auto-battled everything after the first couple missions, but the magic I had access to was extremely weak... mostly coming down to weak buffs whose effects I could barely notice. There is one debuff that cuts an enemy's damage in half, one enemy stack, that's decent for saving yourself from a single powerful stack or reducing your losses during cleanup of enemy team. Same Old, Same Old Nothing here that hasn't been done before as well or better before, usually 15+ years ago. Especially for a campaign player. For skirmish or versus you're probably fine, it's just a standard hommlike with admittedly more polished graphics, but also blander visual style.
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era,
Hear me well: Songs of Conquest is not a bad game by any mean. It has four factions to play with, thus four (although small or even tiny) campaigns, lots of items to equip your Wiedlers (ie Hero), and probably a lot of other things for it that I am forgotten. However, I cannot find it appealing. It is not even the super ugly end of combat zoom on already hyper pixelated sprites that I don't like. It is just that is it not fun, you don't want to do "just one more turn". I loved HOMM2 in its time, but I don't know whether they failed to recreate the feeling of it or if its 30 years old magic is no more... I will probably give it more time, and revised by review if need be, but I have some serious doubt I will love it all of a sudden. But that may be just me... Edit: I spent an addition 10 hours or so to finish the four campaigns, and I won't revised my review. The game feels still solid, but boring, and the more I think about it, the more I think HOMM2's gameplay has aged poorly. If you still enjoy this type of gameplay, then give Songs of Conquest a try, probably worth it, otherwise, well, there are a couple of other games on Steam to look at (who said Darkest Dungeon?).
Songs of Conquest, passt da perfekt, das ist im Endeffekt wIe Heroes of Might and Magic.
Remains bad. The visuals and music are great, but the gameplay balance remains all over the place. The campaign designers think it's OK to let you meticulously work through a map, then flash-enter fully stacked armies five levels above you to curb stomp you without any foreshadowing, warning, preparation or obvious triggers. There's no warning that you're off curve, no way to catch up once they appear and the only way to proceed is rote memorization and cheesing the AI.
Great pixel art. Campaign is uninteresting and gameplay is a slow drag. I regret this purchase.
Как аналог я вам порекомендую гораздо менее известную игру именно этого, HoMM стиля- Heroes of Science and Fiction! Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era.
Campaigns are short and lack depth. Base game factions are basic and do not offer much variety in gameplay with higher tier units being expensive yet lacking impact. Having the developers push new DLC factions with any campaign for them severly limits the appeal to those playing single player. I cannot recommend... go grab Disciples (on GOG), or Age of Wonder if you want something with a bit more to it.
