Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/cNfj4NT_cbQ I wish I could do a sideways recommendation. Since I have to choose up or down, I'm choosing up, but this is a very mediocre wave shooter. It's quite bland. Gameplay is very basic. Content is very light. I beat the game in about 40 minutes, although there's a few alternative levels you should be able to maybe get into in a subsequent playthrough. So there's probably at least an hour of total content. However, the gameplay never evolved. There's no upgrades, no skill trees, no alternate fire, nothing but shoot your gunner and put out a fire. That's all there is to the gameplay. Shoot little red dots. When your ship gets on fire, pat out the fire with your avatar hands. Rinse and repeat. Just target priority really since your gunner can overheat & some enemies have shields. While I didn't enjoy the gameplay, I do think this gameplay must be targeted for kids for my first shooter. As such, I think I would recommend this game for kids looking for a very casual game where the shooting is mindless and repetitive and has enough challenge for kids. It also has very cute animal characters and VOs. It's running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I did not experience any optimization issues or bugs. Everything worked as it should. I'm probably never playing this again and I'm definitely uninstalling. Rate 5/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. If you like silly little rail shooters then you might enjoy this! Great in VR too
If you like arcade games and classic retro games like Star Fox, you'll love this :)
Note: I played this game on Quest 2 via SteamVR for the purposes of this review. Also note that I've played a bunch of the pre-Steam versions of 'Sky Squadron', so my play time isn't indicative! 'Sky Squadron' is a delightful and completely charming rail shooter that plays like a love letter to 'StarFox'. With 'sticky' lock on and a big central joystick, hosing down enemies feels like, well, using a pressure hose, and firing the miniguns in targeted bursts is very satisfying. Levels see your aircraft flying through modular sections, destroying sections of the environment and fighting enemies that run along set flight paths. There is a huge variety of gameplay encounters within the sections, and the behaviour of the different enemy types means that the devs get a lot of mileage out of them without feeling repetitive. There's clearly a lot of very impressive tech under the hood here, which I'm sure is only starting to be fully explored in what's available to play now. The regular enemies are dynamic and satisfying to fight, but 'Sky Squadron' really shines in its dramatic, multi-stage boss battles. Bosses are huge, complex, and made from destructible parts which change the fight as they progress. Pursuing a massive, gun-laden train was a highlight for me, with the individual carriages reminding me of a good SHMUP boss. Disassembling the bosses is a delight, and I can't wait for more :) Gameplay aside, this is probably the best-performing VR game I've ever played. Rock-solid 120fps on Quest 2, and you can tell immediately that everything was designed with optimal performance in mind. My only quibble worth mentioning, is that the game's dialogue might not be everyone's cup of tea (very heavy on the 'Australianisms'), and the audio design still has room for improvement, and the but as this is an early access title I'm sure that'll change as development continues. 'Sky Squadron' is a very impressive achievement from a tiny, two-person dev team; if you want to follow along and see what they've got coming down the line, for a very affordable price, I highly recommend grabbing this.
Fun in 2D but a VR banger. I played this game on the Quest initally but thought I'd support it on steam too and try out the flat screen mode. Obviously it doesn't have the immersion of VR (which this version still includes) but it's still a fun, vibrant shooter which is just nice to relax with a few missions after work. Good fun co-op also just shooting colorful polygons with a buddy.
Great game, very addictive with funny dialogue
Fun little Aussie Star Fox. Plays good. I have not tried it in VR yet but I like that I have the option for it. Great value!
Really good level design that reminds me of arcade shooters, exactly the way you want from this kind of game.
Sky Squadron gives you all the feeling of having Star Fox from back in the day in full blown Virtual Reality. The game has great scenery and voice acting all while throwing an action packed combat from your plane! This game has several levels and boss fights which can very very challenging on the harder difficulty levels. There is also options to allow the gun aiming to move slower and height adjustment. This game was a blast to play and i cant wait for the dlc with more levels to be added!!! Full Review Video Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEQOyC6ZHSQ
Great little rail shooter with a sense of humour and fun colourful graphics! Would recommend for the whole family!
