A sci-fi otome visual novel in which secrets are waiting to be discovered... :o

Introduction
SIGILLVM: RESONANCE is an otome, sci-fi visual novel developed by Levistok and published by BRXKENVN. You're Asra Dival, a human serving under Hemin, the Inspector of the Choir. The city in which Asra resides is inhabited by humans, devas (human-like beings who live for lifespans longer than humans), and harmonauts (like devas but on a higher plane). They're ruled by the Choir, who oversees the city, in the Sigillvm Tower, and the Choirmaster is a leader who watches over everyone. (I know that's quite a bit of terminology, but the game explains it in more detail. XD) All Asra wants is a quiet life, following Hemin's orders, having lost most of her memories due to a traumatic incident. However, after she's targeted in an attempted murder, Asra ends up being pulled into an investigation in which she must find out what's going on, and perhaps along the way, she may get caught up in some heated romance. ^^ With the gameplay, several choices are presented. The early choices determine whether Asra can choose to go on one of three romance routes: Hemin, Voyd (a harmonaut who also serves under Hemin), and Ista (a deva who serves under Hemin, too). However, Asra has the freedom to go on an alone route. After getting on a romance route, fewer choices are shown, and either Asra will get a good or bad ending. A few choices can lead to deaths for her. Lots of beautiful CGs are shown as well as a varied soundtrack although no voice acting is present. Plenty of Steam achievements are available, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game".
Review
I admit that after a string of short games a bit recently, I was in the mood to play a longer one and especially since it has been a while that I last played an otome game, I went ahead and gave SIGILLVM: RESONANCE a try. Also, it's a plus that I like stories with sci-fi settings. XD
Story and Gameplay
The story starts off slowly as we're introduced to Asra and the city that she lives in. There's talk about festivities and celebrations although the mood is far from it. Despite that Asra has amnesia, her personality shines at times if she chooses to get close to any of the romance options. I like how she and Hemin share witty banter, while with Ista, Asra's flirting gets him all shy. As for Voyd, he takes it all in good stride and perhaps returns Asra's affections. All of the romance routes are wonderful, full of fun moments mixed with sweet, heated ones. With the romance scenes, it's mostly kissing, so nothing beyond that. Also, I like how with each romance route, Asra can investigate what's going on with Sigillvm Tower and its inhabitants, so there's plenty of story. I'd say that with Ista's route, the most information gets revealed, assuming that you're going for his good ending. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3763966911 Although I enjoyed all the romance routes (Ista's my favorite - can't help loving those shy, sweet guys XD), I felt like the good endings were a bit on the short side. As for the bad endings, they're pretty heart-breaking, but I feel like they're more resolved. Now, as for the alone ending, I was hoping that all of Asra's backstory would get unraveled, but it only happens halfway. I still had more questions than answers, and as a reader who enjoys learning as much about the lore of the world and its characters, I would have liked a bit more resolution. As for the choices, I like how you can see the effects that your choices have. For example, if you choose to have Asra ask Voyd questions about his work, an up arrow is indicated to let you know that Voyd likes that Asra is taking an interest. Choices can decrease favorability, too. Although I encountered a few technical issues as I played through the routes, the developer was quick to fix them, so I'm very appreciative of that. ^^ I had no problems unlocking all the achievements, and I should have a guide for this game shortly before or after posting this review, so hopefully, that'll help.
Art and Music
The art style gives off that sci-fi theme very well. Especially, the sprites and backgrounds reflect that futuristic world, and I like the use of dark, muted colors, with the occasional splash of bright colors to give off some contrast. Of course, the CGs are done really well to the point that it was difficult for me to decide which ones to show off. XD https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3763966560 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3763966719 In regards to the music, there's a good variety of tracks that depict the sci-fi, futuristic vibe. They're all instrumental in nature, and my favorite tracks would be the darker, more haunting ones, as if Asra is in danger.
Conclusion
Would I recommend SIGILLVM: RESONANCE? If you're looking for an otome game that has a sci-fi setting and you want some hot, sweet romance (but prepare your heart for some possible heartbreak if you make that wrong choice) and/or you like getting those Steam achievements, then it's totally worth checking out. Even though I wish that there was more resolution in the alone route, the romance routes make up for it. Finally, I'd like to take the time to thank BRXKENVN for the review copy to Otome Rakuen and a shoutout to Levistok for helping me with those technical issues. I'm very grateful for the help, and the story was so enjoyable. It was worth it to go through every route and ending, even the heart-breaking ones. ^^
Otome Rakuen and The Introverted Gamer team up to give readers highly detailed, thorough reviews of hot otome games.
That ending was absolutely terrible. What the heck even was that? I feel bad writing a bad review for a small developer but seriously... I played Voyd's route and after building up the relationship and story for the whole game they just go out on the balcony and have a little chat and it just ends very abruptly. There is no closure for the story or the relationship. Like they built up so much spicy tension and then nothing came of it. They wrote a really cool story and then nothing was resolved. It all built up to nothing. I had to do a double take because I couldn't believe the game was actually over. I was completely dumbfounded. If I could sum up the game it would be, "I hope you're hungry... for nothing."
A complex and engaging story with interesting characters. Writing is well done and the art style is very pretty. I found myself wanting to know the whole truth so badly that I played the game through in one sitting. I followed the Voyd route one my first playthrough and enjoyed it, and I'll probably go back and play it again soon and pick a different route just so I can pick up on the details I missed because the lore is pretty dense and I know there is a lot I probably missed.
(From the Makers of Caball... Only for you... Would I read something Sci-Fi. ^-^) No, but seriously. Even if you aren't a fan of Sci-Fi stuff, this Developer sure knows how to put together an interesting story, as well as characters. It's hard for me to describe exactly what draws me to these works... It's more like... Everyone and everything is intriguingly weird. In a mysterious, alluring kinda way. And well, the CGs are fun/really well drawn as always. The Russian/English is superbly great as well. I also enjoyed the slight humor, the mystery and Voyd's certain expression. I couldn't stop laughing at that one. As for the guys... I liked them all. Truly. All distinct and with their own quirks. Voyd got the hotter CGs. Ista the sweeter ones (Asta's lil cheek pushed up a little as she had her head on his chest was so cute!) and Hemin got the... I guess in between both of those? Still more complicated though. Figures. And ah Neph. Lol. That one is both terrifying and a crazy fun character to behold at the same time!!! I don't have anything negative to say about this VN. I honestly and very much enjoyed it.
This game has been on my wishlist since I played the demo. Even though I found the original English script a bit difficult to follow, the world building sucked me right in and I was eager to learn more about the mystery surrounding the FMC and the backstories of the love interests. Now that I played through the entire thing (all achievements), just want to leave a review (spoilers free) for those who are on the fence and for the developers if they consider revisiting (I hope) the game world. TLDR: I recommend the game. The good: - The character designs and CGs are consistent and well done. Sprites blended well with the background. I always appreciate good art in a visual novel because it’s such a prominent piece of the experience. - The world building/lore is also well done (with some caveats, see below). Unfamiliar terms are included in a glossary, which is nice. It’s worthwhile to play through all the good and bad endings not just for the achievements, but for the extra tidbits of information that you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise to “solve the mystery.” The game gives you just enough information about the social structure and power dynamics that the tension or the potential sources of problems in the story makes sense. But as I will elaborate below, you never learn the whole picture, and I think that’s why this could give a lot of potential to a future DLC. - The romance with love interests progresses fairly naturally for a short game. If I were to estimate, the common route spans about half the game, which is fairly long, meaning although there are some sweet moments in the game, which I did enjoy, they felt short when they are competing with (or literally cut short because of) the plot side of the game. For those looking for a spice rating - I consider there was basically no spice, but YMMV. - The music soundtrack really builds the atmosphere of the world. Thinking back, I think there may have been certain soundtracks dedicated specifically to individual love interests, which is a nice touch. The not so good: - I think several of the points I discuss below could have some connection with the quality of the English translation. I believe the native language is Russian, since at certain points I switched to Chinese and it didn’t seem to be based off of the English script. I really think the English translation could be finessed in a future update to improve clarity. I sometimes used the AI translation in Chinese to read deeper into the English translation at certain points of the game. For context, I’m a native English and Chinese speaker. - I think the biggest issue I have with the current state of the game is that I don’t feel like the story is finished. I’m not sure whether the developers meant to do this, but each route gives just enough unsatisfying pieces of information, whether through an offhanded or vague remark (see my translation point too), that you find yourself going back and forth guessing about things that don’t end up being revealed at the end of any of the endings, including the no romance route that was supposed to give some closure. As someone who likes knowing the answers, I find myself a bit desperate trying to make sense of what I was supposed to learn from the story. I agree with another reviewer that the romance also felt cut short, since there were no after stories that at least explore the relationships after the main arch of the game. Overall, the pros outweighed the cons in terms of my enjoyment of the game. I hope the developers choose to develop a DLC for a more satisfying closure to this game. I think the potential is there to at least do something else with this game universe.
Hello, world!
SIGILLVM: RESONANCE is a Sci-Fi Otome with a very interesting and unique world. You play as Asra Diwal, a young human working for Hemin, the Tower’s Inspector. Unfortunately for Asra, the world does not plan to let her carry on living easy. Over a year ago, something happened that caused her to lose her memory. A concerning meeting with a being that should not exist. And to top it off? Three handsome bachelors that are frustrating all in their own ways, but if you play your cards right, one might just become Asra’s responsibility past the Long Night. At the root of it all, the SIGILLVM is a tower created by The Choir - a pillar at the centre of the world that keeps everything running. Without the said tower projecting its song into the world, it is said that life itself will end. It’s a very complex building that is still somewhat a mystery to the world. The Choir left the planet some years ago now, and it has been left up to the trusted harmonauts to keep it running. But it has recently fell into a phenomenon called Disharmony, a problem they may not be able to fix alone. Honestly, this is an uncommon scenario where I genuinely enjoyed all three love interests. All three of them were different from the next, with their own problems they’re dealing with through the story. Hemin - Asra’s master/boss, the Inspector of the tower, and the person she is closest to. He was created by “Him - The Choir” to oversee the city in His absence, and make sure things continue running smoothly. He’s a “Doll” - a former human that was moved to a body created and chosen by the Choir. Voyd - This here is my sweet, infuriating boy. He’s a confident scoundrel of a Harmonaut who knows exactly how to push Asra’s buttons. He also works for Hemin, although prior to the events of SIGILLVM, he only knew of your existence, and you had never met. Torn between taking a greater role and enjoying his freedom, all while teasing Asra on the side. Ista - honestly, this man is the sweet baby boy of SIGILLVM. Born into an extremely significant Patron family, the standards are high, and the pressure? Even higher. As you meet him, you learn a special - and super rare power called Resonance has awoken in him, leading to many complications for the young and vulnerable Ista as he searches for help from Hemin. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3798668942 Their routes, in my opinion, were also great. In each one it dives into different parts of the plot in different ways, letting you learn more about certain things than another route may show. Hemin’s route especially impressed me. (spoilers for his route)
It was very interesting to see how he genuinely wanted to try and understand how it felt to be human once more. Each route has its own personal detail to dive into but this one felt like it stood out the most.
As soon as you breach out of the common route, there is a notable connection and romance develops between Asra and your chosen LI. This very much met my personal preferences, I like to have romance within my Otomes to be more than just a kiss at the end. And boy, I was spoiled here! There are also some scenes more on the spicy and suggestive side, although it doesn’t go too far or breach into NSFW territory. I didn’t end up doing any of the bad endings myself as I tend to avoid the emotional devastation of my poor little pretty boys being sad. But overall there are several endings, and I did read that the bad ones can be quite dark/sad, so if you like those kind of endings, that may strike your interest. The love interests are also not the only characters of note. There are several NPCs all of which are interesting themselves, and significant in their own way. Although, slightly sad I didn’t get to taint Senti and make him the ultimate sinner. Would have certainly been a fun ride! Above, there are probably a fair few things you don’t understand. Speaking of things like The Choir, a doll, etc - and this is due to the fact SIGILLVM has a very unique world. Humans are but one of the beings inhabiting the planet. At first I was somewhat overwhelmed by the lore of the world, but as you progress it all becomes clear as you progress. There is also a glossary that explains some unique parts of the world as you go. SIGILLVM has some wonderful art. The CGs were beautiful, the men gorgeous, and the backgrounds were just as wonderful, fitting each scene very well. Each character looked very unique from the other. Even the NPCs got just as much love! The choice of music and sound for each scene was also wonderfully fit. I often like to listen to music when I play VNs, but for this one I wouldn’t do so as the music can really help with setting the atmosphere to a scene. When Asra knows something is wrong, the game will make sure the player feels it too. The opening cinematic and menu are also very fitting with the whole vibe of the game. Artistically, it really does feel like every choice here was a great fit. Accessibility-wise, you just have your usual. Text speed, skip speed, display, music and volume. However, I feel it’s relevant to add SIGILLVM has my favourite thing to have in a VN - you can use your scroll wheel to look back on text. I’m terrible for misclicking and skipping, so a history option goes a long, long way. I’m sure a lot of people also feel a breath of fresh air when this exists, misclicking is too easy! The one thing I’d really want from this game is… honestly? The same thing I wanted with CABALL, and it’s more! Not even because I feel it’s lacking in content, but because I loved the world, the characters, and I really, really need to be able to torment Voyd more. My brain craves it. But I do know that Levistock is indeed working on a DLC expansion. Consider me the first at the door! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3798668657 Overall, you can really tell there was a lot of improvement between CABALL and SIGILLVM, and I say that as someone who really enjoyed CABALL and saw its potential. The world building is interesting enough to have me curious, and the characters I enjoy enough to continue playing. In-between sessions I would often still be thinking about Voyd mid-route, so you know I was a sucker for him. Not every VN will be everyone’s cup-of-tea, but if you enjoy Otomes with a sci-fi theme or environment, there is a very good chance this would be up your alley. If you enjoyed CABALL, then even more-so I believe this would fit your tastes. Neither game requires the other to be played as they are entirely separate. But realistically there is nothing I can think of to fault here, it was just an all-round great visual novel that definitely jam well with my personal tastes. I believe Levistock will only grow and improve from here, so dip your toes in and enjoy a wonderful experience.
