This game kinda reminds me of Papa Louie. Anyone remember that game? XD
One of the best 2D platformers out there. I paid $10 for everything, but even $40 at full price is fair. 10/10
Surprised most people didn’t finish King Knight’s campaign when it is easily the best one
Indeed a trove of treasure to dig through. There are multiple good and great experiences here with a ton of charming and well designed gameplay. I didn't think I'd be a fan of these types of platformers once before, but now I've been enlightened thanks to Shovel Knight. Apparently they released this as just Shovel Knight and then updated it over time as per the Kickstarter knight DLC stretch goals to add the other knights and their campaigns? You get so much retro 8-bit goodness here and it's best to get this collection instead of the games separately since Plague of Shadows isn't available on its own. All these campaigns tell a story that connects them to each other so it's important to play them all I say. Thoughts on each in order: Shovel of Hope is the original and it's just plain good. It doesn't appeal as strongly to me since it's definitely the most simple with the least interesting gameplay. It's still fun and solid platforming though and the charm is what really carries it into being a really good game. The best part of all of Shovel Knight to me is how addicting it is to collect treasure that's littered all over the place. The platforming may be simple and ( for me ) not very challenging, but it'll always be fun to run through these levels while greedily getting every piece of gold and gem just to see that number go up. The gold is actually useful for buying new items and upgrades and it feels very bad when you lose some. There's a good amount of exploration to find secrets and extra rooms to add onto the platforming which I appreciate, but that goes for all of these games. The story of Shovel of Hope is the most straightforward of them all but it's solid. The usage of the dream sequences and the twist at the end I say are really good and makes it more than just a generic story. Plague of Shadows is weird to me because I wouldn't even call it a game. It truly does feel like you're replaying Shovel of Hope but with an as described alternate story and a different character. The levels don't change too much and you're going down the same progression path. This is probably why it's not available on its own; it feels the most like a DLC and should've instead been made purchasable DLC for the standalone Shovel of Hope game. Anyways, I do like the campaign more than the original because of the much more interesting movement and the more intriguing story. You make your own bombs with unique effects and use cases to toss around with dozens of combinations. Being able to do warcrimes with tons of different bombs all while following a sillier story with funny writing is quite the good time to me. I do really wish they gave Plague Knight her own unique levels though to take more advantage of her unique playstyle and movement. Only is the case for the side stages which is cool but not very substantive. Specter of Torment is more like classic Mega Man due to you no longer having a level map and instead the ability to play the stages in any order. The gameplay is also different with Specter Knight's unique platforming being focused on with his own levels. It was very refreshing to have all new level designs with new visuals and music to go along with it. I'm not in love with the gameplay though because it does have its own issues. With each stage being able to be the first, a difficulty curve isn't pronounced, so after you upgrade yourself and get good items it becomes much easier than the other campaigns. Also I had a personal struggle with the slashing since it just wouldn't work for me sometimes and caused some unfortunate failures that weren't my fault. What really makes me love Specter of Torment still is the great story. Seeing how the Order of No Quarter was formed and having a dive into Specter's past and personal struggles was much more enjoyable than all of the other campaigns' stories. King of Cards is what truly made me love Shovel Knight. THIS is the best game hands-down. It's even more of a standard platformer now with many smaller levels. It takes from Wario Land and Mario World with the core bashing gameplay and the hunt for secret exits to play other levels. The treasure collecting gameplay has never been better with there being more ways for them to challenge you to get all the gold. The items and upgrades of this game are my favorite with a lot being viable and really changing up your gameplay. This is a great platformer on its own, but strangely enough it's also quite a fun card game. You get cards of the enemies and characters and must place them down to have them then get pushed onto the gems all while fighting and blocking your opponent from claiming them. It's well designed and fun enough to not make me miss the main platforming that much. You can also just ignore it if you don't want to deal with cards I guess which is cool. With this game being so distinct and twice the length of the others, it's honestly worth considering just playing it by itself if you're not interested by what the rest of Shovel Knight has to offer ( but I'd still definitely reccomend getting Treasure Trove ). 8-bit visuals aren't usually my favorite but the enhancements they made while still being faithful here are deeply appreciated. They kept oldities such as a big black bar for the hud on screen and a limited color palette, but they have features such as parallax scrolling and no sprite limitations to keep it from feeling outdated. There are some real beautiful level theming or shots in cutscenes to enjoy and the animation of the characters is just so charming. The music too goes surprisingly very hard. The amount of emotion they get out of these compositions despite the 8-bit limitations is amazing. Definitely an OST worth listening to by itself. These Shovel Knight games are a staple in indie gaming. You've gotta play them if you wanna experience the best of indie games and the pinnacle of retro-throwback games. Getting it on discount too makes this one of the best collections you can buy!

I liked the part where Shovel Knight said it's shovelling time and then shovel'd all over the place.
