A short but sweet little game
I got this in a humble bundle, and it's a charming little Zelda-esque game. I had fun with it :)
Really great game, but the platforming is going to be the death of me

That recent Humble Bundle is the golden opportunity to check which Shantae games are actually good as opposed to just having good presentation. I keep getting lost in this one! Ugh! Thumbs down! Also it's very goofy that you can't swap confirm/cancel without also remapping jump. Well at least it allows me to pretend I'm Japanese, like that guy in Monster.
What a fun and quirky game. Loved all the characters and humor. Game was fun and charming. Short but tough in its own way
It's great to play after Risky's Revolution as that game directly sets up the plot to this one, and I think this game generally does alot of good. I mean It's a Shantae game, so at worst it's gonna be bad backtracking and questionable mechanical choices. Things RR did well - 1. I love the music 2. I love the sprite work 3. I actually REALLY like this games illustrated art style Things RR ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up on - 1. Horrific backtracking and a confusing map system, also the game feels way more sluggish compared to the other entries. 2. The transformation mechanic feels really fickle and has the chance to just not work at all in time. 3. The stupid rock guys blocking your way feels really obnoxious and for a game all about exploration it sure loves to ♥♥♥♥ block me from going straight east. But really these are minor things, and I doubt this'll make or break someone from enjoying the game.
Short and Sweet
I haven’t heard much about the Shantae series. I actually only learned of it through Smash Bros. but I’ve been on a metroidvania game run so I thought I’d give Shantae a try. I have to say that I quite like this as my introduction to the series. At first I wasn’t sure how much I’d actually get out of the game. The map looked small, which I guess it is comparatively to some other games, but every room is very economical with each serving a purpose either to the story or collectibles. The controls are really tight and feel good to use. Platforming and traversing the map is a lot of fun with the backslide mechanic making me feel like I’m a speedrunner with some hidden movement tech. The graphics are also a highlight with the Gameboy style sprites mixed with the more high fidelity sprites for dialogue. Some things are….a little over animated, but still tasteful. The game’s not too difficult, but the achievements were. There are a few achievements for the different post credit ending murals which you can get based on how fast and how many items you collect similar to Super Metroid with some…. direct parallels iykyk. The others achievements were fairly normal like killing enemies and performing odd tasks, but the ending 4 was quite the challenge. There’s also a harder mode you get for beating the game, but it’s still very manageable. Overall the game is good and a solid 8-9 hours casually with more for hunting the endings, achievements, and getting all the collectibles. 7/10. Not blow-your-mind amazing, but solid.
I hope we get the first Shantae game for steam! I love this series so much!
