For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. Reviews
Scar of the Doll is a visual novel originally released in 1999 that lasts for about 90 minutes to two hours and follows a student searching for her own sister. The story is neatly packaged and doesn't get out of control too much, though there are a few unanswered questions at the end. It does have a tense atmosphere aided by the music and a few creepy scenes with a general sense of unease; atmosphere is something the game does very well. However, it is a bit clunky in the sense that saving always takes you back to the beginning of a scene, and many dialogue options result in a game over, which means that some scenes you have to just guess what option is the right one, often with no real context clues. But with how short the game is, it never bothered me too much. For the price, it's worth buying if you like suspenseful, obscure visual novels and on a sale even more so.
Score: 7.8/10
It took me almost 4 hours to beat the game, the game is enthralling from beginning to end.
Pros
Charming visuals. Memorable soundtrack. A nice and unpredictable story. The game gives you enough feedback after every game over.(And honestly, you barely lose progress)
Cons
Navigating is a little hard outside the lab. Some of the events in the last part of the game were a little too silly to my taste, with some weird music choices. I feel like the mistery of her sister ended up taking a back seat by the end of the game. Having to manually save the game every once in a while. Lack of settings options.(I wasn't even able to have the game on fullscreen)
If you want a short story that'll take you on a trip, check this out. Not the remake though, ♥♥♥♥ sucks.
Short, sweet, and to the point. I had an idea of how the story was going to go early on, but it still managed to surprise me. Gave me some real food for thought, too... Definitely recommend if you've got some time to kill on a quiet afternoon.
Scar of the 90s
First, praise given for resurrecting this "choose your own adventure" horror VN from the CD-ROM era, in a playable state on modern machines. Second, forgiveness for the slightly dated game mechanics. Like repeating all the intro text everytime you return to a menu after a choice. Or manual save system. Finally, appreciation for the quality story, and the game taking us right back to the 90s. And that this a VN where you can die! Advisory: The English localisation of this game is serviceable, but rather clunky.
Greate suspense. This VN from the 90s provides a well actualized story. -Paths that give you game-overs will give you some details.
Classical and interesting.
I wanted to like it. I saw a video essay on YouTube that didnt spoil anything and decided to give it a try. It underwhelmed my expectations by a wide margin. It’s very clunky, slow, repetitive, and the surprise can be guessed from the beginning. Do not recommend.
