About
Salt 2 is a pirate themed open world game with a focus on exploration, crafting, survival, and RPG elements.
You wake up stranded on an island and must find resources to build a raft and head out to sea. Set sail across the world solo or with up to 5 friends. Your ship will act as your traveling base as you explore in any direction you want. Discover islands filled with hundreds of hand crafted caves, ruins, pirate forts, and other mysterious places. Follow the main storyline to uncover the mysteries of the world or join various guilds and earn a name for yourself. Craft powerful weapons and armor, hunt and fish for survival, level up your character unlocking unique skills and talents for your gear, and decorate your ship, making it your home at sea.
In Salt 2, we've prioritized the PVE experience, allowing you to play completely solo or cooperatively with friends.
This isn't a game with naval combat, but is focused on PVE content such as decorating your ship, going on quests, and exploring islands with tons of unique locations. You don't have to worry about being attacked by other players while exploring the sea and losing your progress. The core gameplay is built around the solo and cooperative experience. A huge focus has also been put on making your ship your home base at sea. We've added over 100 different ship decorations you can place anywhere on your ship. Plus, the world is procedurally generated so you can explore in any direction for as long as you want.
Salt 2 is about pure freedom. You start in the middle of a vast ocean, pick a direction, and set sail across a procedurally generated world. Navigate the seas with a compass and sextant, using map coordinates as your guide to new locations. Discover uncharted islands with ruins, pirate camps, seaports, and over 200 unique dungeons all filled with loot and lore. Even though the islands are procedural, our points of interests are hand crafted with unique secrets, puzzles, and design.
Your ship is your home at sea. While exploring the world you will find all kinds of items to craft and decorate your ship making it unique to you. You can place items virtually anywhere on your ship and customize it as you see fit. While traveling the sea you can also craft items, cook food, and fish for survival.
You’ll need food to survive. Grab a fishing pole and toss a lure overboard to catch some fish or grab your bow and head into the woods to hunt some wildlife. Once you've got your ingredients, it's time to start cooking. With over 50 different meal recipes to discover, you'll constantly be on the lookout for a new recipe that will not only keep you alive, but give you passive benefits as well.
We wanted to create a world that you could not only get lost in, but live in. You set the pace of your adventure and decide what you want to do. Maybe you’re in the mood to go on epic quests and hunt down a world boss, or maybe you just want to relax on the shore and catch some fish. The choice is yours.
The islands are full of dangerous enemies. Fight legendary pirates, skeletons, bosses, and dangerous wildlife in your hunt for adventure.
As you explore the world you will discover tons of resources that can be used to craft new items, armor, weapons, and decorations for your ship.
Character progression is an important aspect of Salt 2. Level up your character and skills unlocking new world tiers, crafting recipes, and other upgrades. With each new world tier comes more difficult enemies and rare loot.
We've taken a lot of inspiration from games like Diablo and Skyrim when designing our dungeons. While exploring the world you'll discover caves, crypts, ruins, temples, and other dungeons full of secrets, enemies, puzzles, and unique loot.
Salt 2 features an RPG style loot system with different rarities of armor and weapons, and interesting stats to tailor to the play style you want. Each piece of gear also has randomized talents. So whether you are crafting a high level item, or hunting down a pirate captain for an epic sword, you'll always be searching for that new rare item with the perfect roll.
Dock your ship at a sea port and pick up quests and commissions from guilds, the townsfolk, and merchants.
We're a two man development team at Lavaboots and our goal is to make fun and exciting games that inspire adventure. We grew up loving games that dropped you in a big world and let you explore and discover things on your own. Our goal is to recreate that feeling and create worlds that give you the freedom to create your own path and lose yourself in the adventure.

I want to like this game. I want to PLAY this game. I picked it up for co-op with my wife and son. Unfortunately, there is one little problem with co-op play that ruins the whole experience. You cannot enter or exit ANY location in the game unless ALL players are together with you. Yes, in this co-op open world game your group has to follow each other around everywhere, all the time. It ruins the experience and sadly makes the game unplayable. Maybe I'll play it solo and actually enjoy it, but as of now this is a huge disappointment.
I've been playing Salt 2 since the earliest days of Early Access, and its evolution has been great to watch. As it stands now, it is a mostly chill seafaring adventure game I'd recommend to anyone who is into a chill seafaring adventure. Everything surrounds traveling by a series of boats which you can decorate separately to fit your purpose, and summon at will. You venture out in search of quest points, factions, and materials, navigating using a compass and a sextant (though both are relatively simplistic). The combat is straightforward, but can be punishing if you start venturing out beyond your equipment or levels. And every aspect of the game has a level — herbalism, guns, bows, swords, smithing, leatherworking, etc. The fail state is as punishing as you want to make it. The one real issue I have with the game is the lack of robust mapping and/or journaling. You can mark the islands you've visited with various color-coded icons, but I tend to play a lot for a couple weeks, then drop the game. The diver mask in blue is the diver's guild, sure, but why did I mark this island with a yellow spider, and that one with a black spider? And what was I doing on this island six months ago? It's anyone's guess. Still, since I'm just here for a good time, it doesn't truly hinder me in that.

Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 0.89/day in the week to Aug 4 → 1.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

If you are looking for a more relaxed version of the Sea of Thieves experience then this game is for you. Salt 2 focuses on a more casual PVE experience with your pirate ship also doubling as your base and crafting center. You can fully customize the layout of your ship with all kinds of neat decorations and freely explore the ocean to find 50+ little islands with loot, plunder, enemies to fight, and mysteries to solve. Overall the game has cool graphics, great sound, music and the controls are solid. A few notes on what some folks might not enjoy are the lack of PvP, no ship vs ship combat, and the map mechanic may be a bit complex for some(I personally thought its was really cool). Overall this is a fun game to play and well worth its price.
The game looks very nice and the previews seemed interested, but ultimately it just feels "hollow". There's not enough going on in the world, it all feels very empty, not truly random. I want to find cool stuff exploring but its all just, empty. No ship cannons, lots of stuff missing.
It's a casual sailing simulator, nothing more. If you bought it thinking it will be a pirate game you will be disappointed. There isn't even much to do on the sailing front.
5/5! If Sea of Thieves were a PVE-focused RPG rather than a PVP Action game, you'd get Salt 2! I'm 5.5 hours in and I keep giddily shouting at my wife every time I discover some new cool item or game feature. Beautiful graphics in an immersive environment, from the wind in the tree leaves to the waves on the sea. The RPG elements are fun, well-balanced, and seamlessly implemented. The skill bonuses and skill trees are exciting, the crafting is casual-friendly, and the equipment is terrific - every new gear piece I get feels rewarding! There's also a surprising amount of lore and depth to the world, much more than I expected, particularly if you read the in-game books. This game has everything I wanted and so much more! I can see myself happily investing dozens of hours into this awesome gameplay loop. Best money I've spent on a game all year!!! Drink up, me hearties, yo ho!
I took a chance on this game after lengthy consultation with Copilot AI. In many ways it reminds me of the Elder Scrolls games, which were among my all time favorites - Salt is just a little watered down version set to a pirate theme. I'm not looking for intense combat, just very relaxing exploration, very light combat. I'm already putting in 8-12 hr days and really feeling drawn into it. This is NOT pirate PVP, but it certainly fills a niche for those players who aren't looking for that experience. This game gets a high five from me! Edit: after 100 hrs I'm uncovering unsettling aspects of the game that would have prevented me from buying it had I known in advance. For those with a Christian conscience, this game refers to magic (but not utilizes it as a weapon form) and has the player engage in an occult ritual as part of the main quest. Unfortunately there's no mention of any of this anywhere. You decide if it's right for you.
Do NOT buy this game if you want to play it with friends. I would return it if I could, because I have never seen worse multiplayer functionality in a so-called "released" game. We were really hoping for a good Sea of Thieves replacement, but this ain't it. Pros: - The map/sextant functionality is actually kinda fun and I enjoy game maps that don't hold your hand - Some minor boat customization, I guess? Cons: - The game does NOT look good. As in: the style of islands to sea/sky is completely unmatching and many meshes look like placeholders. - MP functionality gives every player their own boat, but doesn't let them sail further away than 2km. Even if you just want to enter a house to talk to a merchant, EVERY SINGLE PLAYER needs to accept and join - in addition to other shenanigans like clipping out of bounds upon teleporting, etc. - Sorry excuse of a character editor. I choose a name and then it doesn't even display that name to other players? - Fade-out/fade-ins everytime I climb up 3 rungs on a rope ladder... this is insane. - No cannons.
I like survival games. I like sailing games where you have to manually manipulate the sails and steering yourself. I think why I am enjoying this game so much so far is that I purposefully stayed away from any type of videos showing gameplay or discussions about the game. The world is a complete mystery to me and so far it has been super immersive.
Oufff... there's a lot to say here. I forced myself to finish the main storyline and I probably shouldn't have. Salt2 is a very very basic game, in all aspect. Graphics, gameplay, world building, puzzles, it's game making like we did in the late 1990s early 2000s. If you are intimidated by videogames, are looking for something to get your feet wet, and the theme appeals to you, this game might be for you. The price is friendly too. In many ways it feels like a student project where the teacher forgot to tell them to stop. At no point are you going to forget you are playing a videogame. Everything is generated, fake and planted. Unique locations and named NPCs repeat all over the place, completely breaking suspension of disbelief. Ebony is a metal that you mine. The progression is the blandest possible, with only numbers going up and nothing changing. The ship are undifferentiated. The puzzles are spelled out and obvious. It's all fetch quests and kill quests. It's 95% sailing and walking. The world is empty and only exists for the player. Technically it is ok, and the ambiance has its moments with seagulls and sunsets. But if that's what you are looking for, turn to Black Flag or even Sea of Thieves. The absence of naval combat in a pirate game is just... Controller support is tedious an lazy, with use of a cursor even to select items in a list menu (main menu for example). If you actually enjoy the basic blandness of it though, there is TONS of content. Questlines upon questlines, side quests, deliveries, orders, random loot. None of it is meaningful, satisfying or differentiated, but there is a LOT of it. As a side not, always focus on quests. I did a lot of random exploring early and it slows down progression and acheives nothing, forcing you to revisit locations onces a quest inevitably send you where you are already been. So I sunk 48hours into this and I really wish I hadn't. I hope your time is more fruitful.
