Rusty's Retirement is the perfect mix of active and idle content for a desktop companion game. It's an idle-farming sim that sits at the bottom of your screen, but there's actually a ton to engage with beyond just watching numbers go up. I'm not a fan of desktop idlers that don't have much substance to them, and this definitely isn't one of those. Between the layout optimization, the wonderful pixel art, and the way the game politely gets out of your way when you need it to, this one's a very easy recommendation.

Rusty's Retirement has you growing crops, producing biofuel, and deploying a team of little robots to automate your farm, all while the whole thing sits at the bottom of your screen so you can work or browse on top of it. Coming from other desktop idlers, I was cautiously optimistic going in, but this one ended up being one of the better executions of the genre I've played.
[b]The gameplay.[/b] This is the perfect mix of active and idle content for a desktop idler. Rusty does his thing alongside all the other robots and farm friends on his own, but you can also dig in further and optimize your layout in a way that's efficient, appealing, or both. I'm not a fan of desktop idlers that don't have much substance to them, and this definitely isn't one of those. There are a ton of different systems to engage with here, and it makes you think about where you're placing things rather than just clicking randomly. It's also not nearly as mind-numbingly slow as something like Ropuka's Idle Island, where it feels like practically nothing is happening. Here, you can actually feel and see your progression, which makes the waiting and optimizing feel rewarding instead of tedious.
[b]The presentation.[/b] The pixel art is wonderful, and the animations are really nice on top of it. The music is solid too. Once you get things going, everything looks pretty even if you weren't specifically trying to make it look that way, and it's honestly just nice to sit back and watch everything happening on its own for a bit.
[b]The user interface.[/b] This might be a small thing, but I love that the game doesn't perpetually plant itself in front of everything else you're doing on your screen. It takes up a decent chunk of space, and when I need to click something at the bottom of my screen, I need it out of the way. Thankfully, the moment you start clicking around your active window, the game automatically drops to the background, and you can bring it back up whenever you want while everyone keeps working in the meantime. Small touch, but it makes a real difference for actually using this while working.
[b]The achievements.[/b] I'm not a fan of needing to restart the entire game from scratch multiple times just to get every achievement. The early stages of the game are fairly slow, so repeating that grind over and over again isn't exactly the most exciting prospect, even if the rest of the game does a good job of keeping things engaging otherwise.
[b]My side tangent.[/b] Also, I'll admit I'm a bit confused seeing some people downvote this game for being too active. I get the argument that it might be too idle for some tastes, but too active is a strange complaint to me. If you want an experience that's entirely hands off with zero interaction, I'm not sure I understand the appeal of a game like that in the first place.
Overall, Rusty's Retirement nails the balance between active engagement and idle relaxation better than most games in this genre manage to. The pixel art, the animations, and the thoughtful little touches like auto-hiding when you need to work all add up to a genuinely well-designed desktop companion. The achievement grind involving multiple fresh starts is a real downside, but it's not enough to outweigh everything else this game gets right. I HIGHLY recommend giving this game a try if you're at least a bit interested in this genre!
