Downloaded on a whim. Created an account. Authentication failed. Reset password. Authentication failed. After the third try to actually log in after going through their reset process and having to prove I'm not a robot every time, I gave up. The whim has passed and so will I on this game if their account management system is so trash.
It can be fun. I play this game extremely casually, have a single max level character, and just quest, explore, and enjoy what the game has. I would say i have about 3x the hours shown on steam via the Glyph launcher and just play a few hours every now and then. It has a lot of cool stuff to do and you can ignore the paid items in the cash shop, there are some other items in there that you can earn currency in game or use in game gold - YOU CAN USE IT TO SELL ITEMS OUT OF TOWN! If you get full bags in a quest you can open the cash shop, head to a tab such as potions, and sell your inv. (A lot of people don't know this, you don't need to grind out or spend for bags early on and can wait until you have a nice stockpile of coin) While i'm giving it a thumbs up - I wouldn't suggest this game if you're looking for a "next best". It's old, it's population is pretty much gone, and there are no new updates besides reselling mounts or events that have been the same every year. If you're looking for something to pass the time and just sit back and relax with? You can find lot of fun doing so.

Love the setting, love the art style and detail.... Love the class system and character customization. Rift has a lot going for it. But they REALLY have got to tone down the difficulty. This game does not have nearly the population to handle the amount of aggressive enemies in any given area. I've tried and failed to reach a quest location 5 times and keep dying to a swarm of enemies that all wander into aggro range and pile on. I finally gave up and uninstalled. The mobs are lower level than me, and should be manageable - even with 2 or 3 of them at once. But when there's 5 or more enemies wandering into aggro range and attacking all at once - even when I have a pet - it's just not feasible. It's literally impossible for me to finish this quest until I'm at least 4 levels above it. That defeats the purpose. This has happened to me with several quests now. I'm unable to complete quests at level or even a level or two over them, because there's too darn much aggro ganging up all at once. It's not challenging. It's un-manageable and not fun. The content and enemy density in this game was clearly intended for a very populated game, which it isn't. Not at this point. They need to go back and re-balance these areas so solo players have a chance at completing the content. I doubt that will happen, as it appear Rift has transitioned into maintenance mode. So... Time to move on.
Long live one of the best old-school MMORPGs! I hope Gamigo bring back the game to its former glory.
RIFT deserves better than to be put on life support by Gamigo
A quick comparison of this game for a newcomer would probably be classic WoW. Its from the same era of WotLK and Cataclysm; and features much of the same type of content and activity loop. The game has been in maintenance mode for about 9 years now and doesn't receive content updates or visual improvements. I was expecting to see empty servers but I can happily report that this game still has enough players online in 2026 to find groups to play with and do the endgame content. Though dungeon finder rarely ever procs, for that you may consider running a static with some friends or joining a guild. These other recent negative reviews seem to be idiots complaining about the game being dated or not even knowing what genre they are playing. This game originally came out in 2011 by Trion (the steam page is incorrect) so yes, this is an old game. Its tab target. Its got a time consuming theme-park campaign to grind through. It might take you a month to hit max level doing WoW-style questing. Might as well complain that the sun is hot. The game is perfectly viable as a f2p, but the patron status (the optional monthly sub) speeds up leveling, reputation gain, and dungeon marks by upwards of 40%, so that's pretty significant. Some of the non-vanilla class skill trees require purchase to unlock, which won't stop you from being viable but may get in the way of a few 'meta' build guides. For those saying the game is p2w- the pvp in the current game has pretty much decayed into a barely relevant side minigame which awards some marks for pve gear. The only 'winning' you do in this game is gearing up for pve. Yes, you can pay for a lot of stuff if you prefer to pay to not play your games, but nobodies 'winning' in a cooperative pve experience. New players should probably consider starting on the Deepwood server shard, which seems to have the largest population of player resurgence. players can teleport between shards at will, and can transfer characters for free once a week, but Deepwood will give you the largest pool of guilds to join as a new player. Some players will even lock their level to 50 to play the original content how it was meant to be experienced.
This game is still fun after all these years but know for all new or returning adventurers on new accounts, it will be a slow grind at the lowers levels till 60, you will be on your owns. I still give it a positive rating.
Bring back rift classic
good mmorpg overall, i enjoy instant adventure mostly! used to be into pvp back when the game was popular
This game does not deserve it's fate.
