An amazing experience but not for everyone. Best in class sound design, shooting, graphics and overall game feel paired with a brutal gameplay loop that will punish you unfairly in a way I could only compare to something like Void Stranger where you can "lose" hours. It's a very satisfying game. As much as I say ♥♥♥♥ Sony for locking all their games back to being PS exclusive which means I will likely never buy sony titles again as I'm not a console person, I have to say that this is one you should not sleep on if you are watching the trailers and vibing with them as long as you are a determined player.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Aug 28: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

As much as I liked the story and the general gameplay of Returnal, it is a roguelike after all, so it must be judged on roguelike metrics. I find it ironic to see all the reviews warning roguelike newcomers to be wary -- I would argue this game is very much unlike a lot of other roguelikes, in that I think Returnal really lacks the two main draws of the Roguelike genre: build variety and quick runs. Between the short list of weapons in the arsenal, the short list of artifacts, and the prevalence of simple stat boosts as upgrades, the runs do start to feel same-y very quickly. I understand the variety is supposed to come from the weapon traits, but progression had been too slow for me to actually experience this fully. Even still, the weapons/traits that do encourage a longer-range playstyle get punished anyhow, as Obolites - the main currency in the game - disappear if you don't pick them up, which homogenizes viable weapons/playstyles (and narrows it even more once you face the Biome 3 boss). While each of the weapons were fun to use in their own ways, their unique playstyles have difficulty finding time to shine and more often become hinderances when the right enemies exist to counter the playstyle you're trying to adopt. You end up always getting back to the tried-and-true carbine. Even though the variety isn't really all that much to gawk at, the gunplay is still really smooth and responsive. A real highlight for the game alongside its boss designs. All the bosses are both spectacles to awe at, and spectacles to fear (willem_dafoe_looking_up.gif). It's just a shame it takes forever to get to any of them. Run length is honestly the biggest drawback of this game and it's killed any sort of replayability for it in my eyes. Despite having such a great time fighting each of the bosses, I can't imagine having to go through all the grind just to get there again. Each biome alone takes like an hour, whereas the average run of most other roguelikes are less than that. And could you imagine: this game originally came out with no ability to stop a run in the middle to save your progress. I get that it's not a casual-friendly game but even those of us with no-life need to stop playing at some point 😭. When it takes longer to get to a single boss than it takes to write this long-ass review, there's a bit of a problem. Small section about game performance: Despite having the recommended PC specs for the game, I found that I still really had to concede a lot of the graphical fidelity (low preset, 67% res scaling) in order to have a playable (40-50 fps in high octane encounters) experience, albeit this was on a 1440p display. That said, your mileage may vary. This doesn't heavily affect my review of the game, though it's not insignificant. In all, I think this game still continues to alienate those outside of its niche, which at this point I'm not actually sure what that may be anymore. Not only is this game difficult to get into for a more casual audience, they've also somehow been able to exclude those who play too many roguelikes like me. Narratively, it probably wouldn't make sense, but the game would have probably been better off not being a Roguelike. Despite having a good story and great gunplay, Returnal unfortunately just fails to be its genre.
Score: 8/10 Returnal is one of those games that feels amazing when everything clicks. The movement is super smooth, the shooting is intense, the alien atmosphere is beautiful, and the soundtrack makes the whole experience feel mysterious and stressful in a good way. It really feels like a true next-gen sci-fi roguelike. But yeah, it’s definitely not for everyone. The difficulty can be brutal, dying and repeating runs can get frustrating, and some players complain about bugs or runs feeling a bit too punishing. If you hate roguelikes, Returnal might drive you crazy. Still, when the gameplay starts flowing, it’s addictive, stylish, and very unique. I understand why some people love it and others bounce off hard, but for me it deserves respect.
This might be the most boring game I've ever played. Do not buy it. It's supposed to be a roguelike, but it tells no story and doesn't explain why you're there. You're just playing without knowing anything. On top of that, the combat feels weightless and the hit feedback is terrible. Stay away.
I don't really like roguelikes all that much, but I was delighted by Returnal's first two acts in spite of that. However, I also felt that the third and final act of the main campaign began to drag on a bit, and by the time I was doing my final runs through the Tower of Sisyphus introduced in the DLC, I was hoping that it would end soon. If you are like me and, despite not being a true roguelike enjoyer, you are always compelled to see every last bit of story that any given game has to offer, that means you'll need to run the Tower many times over, and that might become tiresome before too long. That was my experience of it anyway. Your mileage may vary depending on how you feel about roguelikes. Still, even having said all of that, I conclude that even just the main campaign alone makes this game worth playing for just about everyone. Returnal looks, plays, and sounds absolutely brilliant, Jane Perry did a fantastic job in her portrayal of Selene, and the game's mysteries are so tempting that, even though I was getting worn down by some aspects of it, I just couldn't put the game down until I had finished the whole thing.
Returnal is easily one of the most fun games I have ever played. 3D Bullet Hell is a fairly rare genre, and I would probably have enjoyed playing it however well polished it was, but this game is extremely well made. I barely noticed any bugs, and the ones I did come across were not particularly annoying. The visuals were amazing, the music was amazing, the movement mechanics were smooth, and the guns were awesome. I love the way the game balances permanent progression with the roguelike genre. Every permanent upgrade I gained or boss I defeated made me feel like I was making actual progress (however slow and difficult), but the threat of reset on death kept me focused during each and every combat encounter. The difficulty was perfect for me, enough to challenge me to pay attention but not so hard as to make me give up. After beating the final boss I unlocked some overpowered traits for weapons I hadn't used much, and that combined with having all the permanent upgrades made
the first four biomes
pretty easy, but
the last two biomes
remained pretty difficult. The bosses were all very memorable, though often less difficult than the swarms of enemies in regular rooms. I didn't find the storyline to be anything special, but it didn't really need to be, and it was easily good enough to not feel like a let down. The Ascension DLC was also brilliant, providing a more condensed version of the Returnal gameplay loop without the exploration, where you can try out all sorts of overpowered weapons. Where the main game rewards a more careful playstyle and sometimes backtracking, in the Tower of Sisyphus the only direction you can go is up. If I ever come back to this game it will be to play the DLC. 10/10.
game is broken, will not start. i sought out fixes and still no joy. will be refunding. sucks cause i really wanted to play this on PC.
This is a gorgeous, touching, wonderful game trapped in the wrong genre. It's more Metroid Prime than later Metroid Primes. I'm still going to keep playing until I beat it, but it's out of spite at this point. This game, the story it wants to tell, the ache behind it, is trapped in this awful roguelike format that stands in searing opposition to the gravity of the experience. Selene is trapped - why, where, how? - it's a compelling mystery. But it all gets messed up when your ability to take on the challenges of the relentlessly regenerating world after you get LOL BAD LUCK'ed into a malignant enemy at the start of your run, or partway through your run, or, sucks to be you, close to the end of your run. I start this game up every day craving to see it through to the end, to know more of what it wants to tell me, and I shut it down every day in disgust at the way it so belligerently gates itself from being played. The camera is too tight to keep situational awareness; the parasites (a mechanic that offers a modest buff with a sometimes crippling debuff) are such a terrible trade off in 99% of the cases I've seen, there's no reason to take them. The malignancies - a temporary debuff until some condition is met - are entirely RNG. If the condition to correct the debuff is something you can't possibly fix, you're just screwed. It's a hostile world already, and the game itself is hostile to players in a way that's really offputting. I want to play. I want to learn its story and explore its world. It's just that the game doesn't want me to and it's a miserable roguelike where I'm spending more time frustrated by rough RNG and punishing design than thinking over the gorgeous world, the story, the gameplay.
