I now have a migrane
Great game, thoroughly reviewed by others extolling its positive aspects. Here are two downsides. I have one glaring issue with this game about its use of Chinese: There is a scene where a Chinese-speaking character says something like "young lady", which is then translated to that person's name in the subtitles. This is the only way you know that person's name. It is very disappointing in an investigation game that is, commendably, ambitious enough to have a Chinese language team that the crucial clue isn't actually there in the Chinese line being spoken. This really breaks immersion, unless the protagonist character has a magical subtitle tool that somehow translates honorific titles to names. It's also obvious if you don't speak Chinese, because the words being said don't sound like the name in any way. One other thing I don't like is the way backtracking to previously found memories works. It can be a bit tedious.
A mystery, puzzle delight, whose story is central to the puzzle but is never overbearing. You're left to fill in a lot of the gaps with Obra Dinh and I think that's one of it's best elements. Despite scenes being completely static there is a motion to them that unveils an entire short story in each puzzle that is then surrounded by the larger chapter and then the larger voyage to convey a satisfying sea-voyage-from-hell narrative. Dissecting these scenes and the clues within them, and the myriad of ways that information is relayed to the player is exceptional. You're left to wonder, what fear, love, anger, honour, bravery and greed has driven the characters to act the way they have, while being an impartial judge upon all their sins and suffering. It's really good. I recommend.
Mechanically, musically, and thematically the game is quite strong. However, the more the game went down the fantasy plot, the less I enjoyed it. A lot of the plot ends up being "It is is this way because of magic" and to me that detracted a lot from the experience. Like this is still a positive review, I still don't regret spending the time playing, but my expectations were higher.
Head dive, No prior research about the game's story, only the technical production background - And it tingled a box that hasn't been tingled before, detective games. This goes a little beyond the 2D point and click adventure games, and I suggest that anyone gives this game one playthrough at least once. It will make you have headaches, like it or not.
