Up-tempo adventuring and family drama ensue when the survivors of a disastrous charity project return to the dead ships in the former Aral Sea in Uzbekistan. Residue tells a personal story by letting you explore a larger-than-life, ridiculously detailed rendition of one of our world's most fascinating (and horrifying) locations.

This game is crude and boring. The gameplay mechanics are the run-off-the-mill platformer, with some clunky design elements like a grappling hook and an extremely slow old dude, the only decent part being the underwater diving sequences where you actually have to use a minimum amount of the grey matter to plan the cliff jumps ahead to reach the deeper seabed areas. The graphics are pleasant and executed in a unique art style; however, the pick-ups and interactive areas do often blend into background, resulting in some tedious pixel-hunting. The music is surprisingly good and fitting to the situations unfolding on screen. Last, but not the least, - the most important in fact: the story. It's a poor long-lost Central Asian cousin of Nathan Drake and Indiana Johns, spiced with some ecological messages and sprinkled with the duty-before-humanity-or-yourself-first themes. It falls flat, and with a boom. The characters are completely unrealistic (
especially the love relationship component - it could not possibly happen that a romance between a Russian-American scientist and an Uzbek sailor would end up like this on the turn of the millennium
) and behave oddly - like an American boy calling his mother exclusively by her last name. The voice acting is trully horrendous - the characters speak with obscure Northern European accents and not-quite-there-yet intonations. If the developers were going for the more realistic atmosphere, the characters should have spoken with the Russian accents, save for the American chap. Otherwise, a suitable choice would be a generic American or British accent. The state of the dialogues direction as they are breaks the immersion significantly (
also, why would Nikolai and Jumagul bicker in English? They both are fluent in Russianl!
). Verdict: a boring timewaster with no engaging concepts.
This is a 2D retro pixel/hand drawn platformer/adventure game where you control some Russian people or something in some story driven adventure. The translation here is godawfully bad and destroys any hope one could enjoy the story. This leaves gameplay and technical merits. Technically, the game is a big failure, with ugly retro pixel graphics, it's only 2D, fixed resolution, low quality assets, it falls far beneath minimum standards for PC gaming. In terms of gameplay, the game is a big failure, being clunky, fixed controls, only 2D, retro platforming/adventure games like this died out in the 1990s. Impossible for me to recommend.
Switch between the slowest old man, a boy who can scale ropes and chains for days, but yet lacks the upper body strength to do a single pullup and a mysterious grappling hook man as you solve bland platforming puzzles until you get so bored you stop. Artwork is decent and I like that it's fully voice-acted, but it was't enough to carry me through.
Meh, the platforming is pretty weak to be honest.
