Fantastic game, a huge change from the previous games, but still an absolute classic. Graphics are excellent for the time, and even though they are definitely outdated by modern standards, they still hold up surprisingly well. The environments are varied and memorable, from the village and the castle to the island and underground facilities. Everything has its own atmosphere and identity, and the game does a great job of creating a constant feeling of danger. Character models are detailed for the time, and the enemy designs are fantastic, with the different Ganados and creatures being especially memorable. Some animations can feel a bit stiff today, but overall the presentation still looks great. Sound effects are fantastic. The weapons sound powerful, the enemies make disturbing noises, and the environmental sounds do a great job of building tension. Hearing enemies shouting and communicating with each other makes encounters feel much more chaotic and dangerous. The soundtrack is also excellent, switching between tense atmospheric tracks, intense combat music, and quieter moments of exploration. The voice acting is much better than in the older games, although some of the dialogue and delivery can still be wonderfully cheesy. Some of the enemy Spanish voice lines are strangely hilarious. Gameplay is great and very engaging. This is where Resident Evil 4 completely changed the formula. The camera moves behind Leon, allowing much more precise aiming and movement, and combat becomes a much bigger part of the experience. Unlike the previous games, you are expected to fight much more frequently, and the game gives you a huge variety of weapons to do it with. Handguns, shotguns, rifles, magnums, explosives, and other weapons all have their strengths and weaknesses, and choosing how to spend your limited resources is still important. The new combat system is much more action-oriented, but it still retains some of the survival horror elements from the previous games. Ammunition and healing items are limited, enemies can overwhelm you very quickly, and positioning is extremely important. You can't move while aiming, so you constantly have to choose between standing your ground and shooting or lowering your weapon and repositioning yourself. It's a simple limitation, but it creates a lot of tension during combat. The inventory system is also great. The attaché case gives you a lot more control over how you organize your equipment, and finding larger cases gives you more space to work with. The ability to rotate and organize items is surprisingly satisfying, and deciding what weapons, ammunition, and healing items to carry becomes an important part of preparing for the next area. The merchant is another fantastic addition. Finding him throughout the game gives you an opportunity to buy new weapons, upgrade your existing equipment, and sell treasures you find during exploration. The upgrade system is simple but very satisfying, and saving money for that next weapon upgrade or special upgrade gives exploration an additional purpose. Exploration remains important despite the game being much more action-focused. There are treasures to find, hidden areas to discover, puzzles to solve, and optional items that reward players who take the time to explore. The treasure combination system is particularly nice, giving you a reason to hold onto certain items instead of immediately selling everything you find. The enemies are excellent and probably one of the biggest reasons the combat works so well. The Ganados are much more dangerous than the zombies from previous games because they can communicate, use weapons, surround you, and attack from different directions. Then you have the Plagas, which introduce even more dangerous variations. The game constantly introduces new enemy types, keeping combat interesting throughout the adventure. Some of the creatures are genuinely terrifying, especially the Regenerators. The story is simple but very memorable. Leon's mission to rescue Ashley takes him to completely different locations and introduces a great cast of characters and villains. The story is much more action-focused and ridiculous than the previous games, but that's also part of its charm. All the characters are incredibly memorable. The dialogue can be cheesy as hell, but somehow it fits the game perfectly. Another great aspect is all the unlockable extra game modes, which range from the arcade shooter mercenaries mode to a whole separate campaign where you use Ada as the protagonist. The only unfortunate thing I can mention about the game is it doesn't work; you have to download a mod to fix a lot of problems to be able to launch the game and play. In short, a fantastic game and one of the most influential games in the franchise. It changed Resident Evil dramatically, moving the series much further toward action while keeping enough survival horror elements to make the transition work. It may not have the same slow-burn horror atmosphere as the previous games, but the gameplay, enemies, weapons, locations, and memorable characters make it an absolute classic. If you are a Resident Evil fan or simply enjoy action-horror games, definitely give it a chance.

Better than that souless Demake.
There's a "lite" version of the HD Project on Nexus mods. Still a 14GB download but that beats a 40GB download no? It comes with RE4 tweaks too! If you're going back to this game I very much recommend getting that. A fresh coat of paint on an absolute masterpiece. Tank controls are a barrier to entry if you're afraid of playing real video games!
