About
Recettear is the story of an item shop, the girl who lives in it, and the fairy who turned her life upside down. Recette Lemongrass finds herself in charge of an item shop built into her house, in order to pay back a loan her father took and then skipped out on - and Tear, her newfound fairy "companion", won't take no for an answer! As Recette, you have to decide how you'll get your stock - either through playing the markets in town or going out into the wild with an adventuring friend and thrashing beasts until they give up the goodies - how much to sell things for, what the shop should look like, and how to best go about getting the money Tear needs to pay off the loan. If you can't come up with the money... well, hope you like living in a cardboard box.

This has been my go-to comfort game for years! I first played it on my older brother's steam account ages ago, so there is a certain amount of nostalgia involved in my evaluation, but this is still a genuinely wonderful game! I've spent countless hours just setting up the little shop, exploring the crafting system, diving into the dungeon, and even getting absorbed in the characters and story <3 The world isn't as expansive as something like Skyrim, but that's part of the appeal. It gives small town vibes and is something that can be challenging or can let me turn my brain off for a bit. There is a reason that this was one of the first games I purchased for myself when I finally got a Steam account of my own! Plus: You can manipulate the value of an item by flooding the market with it and then buy more of it cheap to resell later at a higher price when the demand is greater again.

Cute little game that mixes dungeon crawling and shop management/sim very well with a little visual novel in there as well. I adored the characters and the art style, and while the dungeon delving itself can tend to get a bit stale after a while, I personally never got tired of running the shop and selling items. Most of the items you sell are from the dungeon and it is required to advance the story, so it's definitely a requirement but luckily it does hold up. If you're looking for a game with some fun and interesting shop simulation and light dungeon crawling, this might be one of the best choices you can go with. I honestly haven't found any other games yet that meld these two themes so well.
