Amazing with friends, just please give us an update to keep this thing alive! :D
Devs put so much love into this game. People say "Ah I wish Barotrauma or FTL was 3D." Yeah here's the game. It's almost exactly that and even a bit better in some places. Yeah this 5 year old game has aged out of popularity, so finding a random MP lobby is kind of hard, but single player works very well and the story hooks you in quick. Ships and factions add so much replayability that make it so the playthrough can be completely yours. Umbra-K54 and Polytechnic are the icing on top and excellent add on campaigns.

Got this because a couple friends wanted to play co-op. In the handful of hours I've played I was frustrated by its bare-bones visuals, ugly and uninformative UI, janky gameplay, and extreme lack of polish, but I felt bad for complaining because it was obviously a brand new Early Access game and the concept had potential. Upon realizing that it's a full game that's been out over three years, I don't feel bad anymore; it doesn't suck because it's in a rough early state, it sucks because it just sucks.
this game has clearly stagnated and died on the vine, and will forever remain in a weird sort of purgatory as far as development goes, but there are very few co-op games that do what this game manages to pull off pretty well. i would describe it as sea of thieves (minus pvp) meets ftl, and being compared to ftl is a huge compliment to any game.
go to space, explore distant planets, embrace utopia in the best star trek fashion!.. except.. everything is on fire, your ship is on fire, you are suffocating because the engineer turned off the oxygen again, you are on fire, the lights goes out. you are lost on the ship, you cant find your vacc suit, the captain is calling your distress "skill issue" and rightfully so <3
This game is absolutely amazing. i wish there were more games like this, and if this game got the development it deserved i have no doubt in my mind it would be the most popular game on steam. In its current state its a little janky and a little empty but with a crew of friends and little bit of role play this game is magic.
Its good when everything works. Sometimes it takes like 2-4 restarts to get a good "run" going where you don't run out of fuel or money. Distance to the first mission can be detrimental, and location of cheap vendors, fuel, missions, and access to research can leave you dead in the water pretty early on. Pros - A few cool and unique locations. - All cursors are visible for pilot and scientist. - Hand held weapons and equipment work great. - Scientist's class sensor is extremely useful on navigating planets. - Good diversity of missions with basic and easy text dialog. (This is good sometimes) - The controls are easy, and manning a ship is easy with a crew of 4-5 friends. - There is a Steam workshop and Nexus Mod support. (VERY BASIC) Cons - 5 player max is pretty boring, I could use at least 8-10 people to man all the positions. Specifically turrets, engineer and a trade person. - The "Tutorial" is LONG and is text heavy, I got more info playing the game with friends, and looking up info on Reddit/YouTube. They need to make a tutorial that places you in a "REALISTIC SHIP" and walk you through the layout and equipment there. Not some random "academy" with maze like rooms with switches and dumb NPCs with paragraph long text boxes. Let me do things and learn. I'm not gonna read all this dialog. - Textures, sounds, music, locations and quest details are basic. Loud "enemy music" will play at random times. Everything is told by text. No cutscenes or dialog. textures are basic and seem clean, unoriginal or cheap. - Enemy ships are "hit scan" and difficult (they can hit you always from any angle), unless you have a upgraded ship with good shields, auto-turrets, or great weapons. Just jump or emergency jump unless your a god gamer that can kill their shields and all of the 1000-2000 hull points in under a minute. - Starting ship weapons are weak (in all classes, race, groups, factions, and ships) and drain power quick, main guns shake the ship making movement difficult and frustrating. - Movement during space combat is terrible, this is not as good as No Mans Sky or any other space game on the market like EVE Online. Movement is difficult, slow and not evasive. - Ship upgrades are expensive, and research items are EXTREMELY rare. - Ships are basic and not customizable before starting, If a ship has no auto turret slot you cant have one. All ships have basic components, there are no miner, research, or combat ships. Everyone starts with the same layout and ship but with a slightly different arrangement of storage slots. (Its boring and unimaginative) - Player customization is decent but not great. There are like 4-6 options for face, body and color. Its pathetic and is not worth wasting time on. TL:DR This game has potential, but it needs to clean up, and embrace mod suppport on the steam workshop for mutiplayer, or it will die.
do not buy to play alone, here's why... AI got me lost in a ship battle and crashed me into comets that blew up my ship. the only role you can play solo is captain and want to play anything else? TO BAD!!! if AI gets stuck on a rock on a planet, they stay until you you give them orders but forgot to? THEY ARE DEAD!!! never to return! EVER!! if you die in a alien shoot-out, EVERYONE ELSE DIES!!! the AI can't even shoot a laser without an order!
This is one of my favorite video games, and probably my favorite Sci-fi game. If you love "Star Trek", you'll love this game. I love that you can walk around on board the ship while the Pilot flies it. I like how there are different roles - Captain, Pilot, Scientist, Engineer, Weapons Specialist. Great for role-playing as a spaceship bridge crew and going on missions. Teamwork is paramount and so much fun with friends. You can also add bots if you're playing singleplayer, and you can tweak their AI and issue commands. You can fly the ship, interact with other ships, explore planets, do quests to help or hinder different factions, gather research samples to unlock new "talents", and gradually learn more about the lore of the setting. You can also play a team of biscuit salespeople for the Fluffy Biscuit Company. Just a great game. Highly recommend.
