I knew what was coming because of malViolence, but man, they did not give me enough warnings about the emotional damage that it contains- If you want a good read, this is pretty good as a standalone story (though no gameplay aside from reading and clicking)
Proto Violence: Definitive Edition — 0.2h played | No achievements | not really a game, more a grim prologue

TL;DR — A free narrative prologue to Malviolence. Very linear, almost zero interaction, but it does set the tone: cynical, uncomfortable, and deliberately disturbing. Worth it only as “bonus lore”, not as gameplay.
Proto Violence: Definitive Edition is basically the appetizer before Malviolence… except the appetizer is a cold plate of cynicism served with a side of “please don’t read this while eating.” Let’s be clear: this is not a game. It’s a short visual-novel style prologue where you mostly read and follow the story. The only moment that pretends to be interactive is a quick “investigation” bit: you get a magnifying glass and click on a few items on a desk (notes, phone, computer). But everything literally blinks at you. You’re not investigating, you’re just clicking where the game tells you to click. Guided, linear, and over before you even warm up. Now, what it does have is atmosphere and intent. The story goes straight into bleak territory: a lab, cybernetic experiments on children, clinical descriptions that drift into borderline territory (amputations, invasive procedures, “test logs” vibes). It’s cynical, dramatic, and uncomfortable by design. The contrast is what makes it hit: the art style looks almost “innocent” (kinda European BD / cartoonish), while the content is anything but. That mismatch gives it a creepy edge and makes the whole thing more disturbing than if it looked edgy from the start. Visually it’s clean and readable, audio does its job, and technically it’s stable. But there’s no challenge, no pacing curve, no real gameplay loop. You consume it like a short prequel chapter. That’s it. So my take: I recommend it only because it’s free and it adds context to Malviolence. If you’re not planning to play Malviolence, you can skip it without losing sleep. If you are, it’s a quick, grim “bonus lore” that helps you understand the tone and the world. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, what a story. I loved malViolence, and this fills in all the gaps I ever questioned to do with the game's story, backstory specifically. Pavel and Deidre are just the best! absolutely recommend, play it now!!
If you like visual novel games this is a great game to play! It has an amazing story and if you haven't played the first game, malViolence, you shouldn't worry! This game is a prequel, and I feel if you play this game before that one you won't be lost at all! I really enjoyed the storyline, and love the art style! I can't wait for the next game to come out! Much love- Q
PHENOMENAL. What a great follow up to MalViolence, the script is tight, the visuals are striking, and the vocal performances are on point. My only complaint is that there isn't enough of it! I wish it were longer, I wish there was more voice acting throughout, and I wish that one scene near the beginning—the one with Pavel's class in class—was fully illustrated and not just a scene showing an empty classroom. I hope there's a third Violence game from Mado soon because god this was good. Also the bonus of the developer notes at the end were really cute 😭
So Mado reached out to me asking if I wanted to play the Violence Series a while ago, being a big fan of Visual Novels, I of course said yes. After I sank my teeth into what malViolence had to offer, I knew I had play the prequel immediately after. What I didn't expect, was a haymaker in the gut. Whereas malViolence hints at the dark world the characters inhabit, protoViolence pulls back the curtain to expose all of the grime and grim-dark elements that makes the main characters who they are. It has to be the most disturbed I've felt in a while regarding Sci-fi Fiction, but at the same time, it was just the right amount of raw shock and horror this origin story deserved. Each of the characters felt human, flawed and vulnerable. The visuals were innocent to begin with, lulling me into a false sense of security that was smashed later on. Listening to certain voice lines hurt my soul in ways I didn't expect. I felt the exact same things that Dr. Deidre was feeling thanks to this amazing coordination of artistic expression. I won't go into details as to why you should play it to avoid spoiling you, but I will remind you, it's a free gut punch, and malViolence is free too. Highly recommend you play that first to understand the foreshadowing. 10/10, I've never felt more like a monster while reading text on a screen.
my wonderful roach son
A very interesting read on the series. While there are some flaw in terms of writing, world-building and a very non-intrusive bug, this is a very impressive work that is build in 30 days as part of a game jam. Let's talk about nitpick things before we get into the positive side: - There are voice acting which is great, however I feel like some of the lines needs to be voiced as well to elevate the ambiance of the current scene. - To my memory, it wasn't really explained what are the organization is for, why it exist, why is it important. It was explain what the program is, but the main organization wasn't really well lay out to the readers who haven't read malViolence. - The choices are there but not a huge impact to the storytelling. Sometimes some of the choices repeat what the readers already knew. - There not much music, so most of the time it was silence. Now the the positive: - The art is great, and there's even a small animation here and there. Very cool to see, it feels like the characters are alive and present moment to moment. - The music really suit the vibe on certain key moment, make it really elevates what is going on during that scene. - The voice acting is great, kudos to the VAs! - The story is very interesting, and it's a short one for those who want a quick read / introduction to visual novel! Kudos to the dev, looking forward for more!
Very great visual novel. Very great music and artwork. It fills in a lot of the context for the previous game malViolence, all the while being a very heartwarming story on itself. It does feel a little linear without much story branches, but it's understandable considering it acts as the prequel for malViolence. Though coming from malViolence, I expected many puzzles to solve, yet I was greeted by none lol. Again, not an issue for most, but it lagged many time on my potato laptop while streaming the game, so I wish they had a setting for game graphics to optimize performance. Everything else was great, definitely recommended. Btw if you haven't tried malViolence yet, I recommend play that first, as it does spoils some story contexts for malViolence. A bit similar to how KH358/2 Days fills in the gap of KH2 iykyk lol.
