Poly Towns is a town-building game in which you start in a single zone and progress through others in order to build an expanding town. You start the game in the center zone in which you're able to build upon; there are nine different zones in total. Within each of the zones there are sixteen sections to build either houses, farms, churches, town halls etc. On some of the sections you’ll find trees and rocks, which, if you want to remove them to make room for some swanky new house or anything else you’d like, it’ll cost you a few pennies. You have a certain amount of money to get you started on building your new town. Start by building some houses so you have somewhere for the villagers to live which will also bring in taxes to keep your town moving forward. Your new villagers will need jobs to keep them occupied, and this in turn will bring in much needed money and resources to further build your town. You can also upgrade each of your buildings, so you have more resources at your disposal. You can build a market to bring in a few more pennies. You are unable to sell anything you build, but you can move them to a free section or even to a different unlocked zone. There are a few jobs which you can give the villagers and each place of work will have to be built. There’s the farmers, who will give food to keep your villagers fed. There’s the woodcutters and miners, who will give you building materials. You can assign up to three homes to each workplace to bring in those much-needed resources; having them nearby to the homes will get them in quicker. You have also got to keep your town folk happy; if their happiness runs down to zero then it’s game over. It’s also game over if you run out of money or food, so you must manage your resources, making sure you’re always in the plus on resources as they’ll soon dwindle as your town grows. To keep your town folks happy, you must build them parks and churches. To expand into another zone, you must build a town hall in the first zone and acquire 5,000 coins to unlock your second zone, 10,000 for the third then 15,000 for the fourth and so on. There are a couple of goals to achieve, which are to reach a population of 1,000 and to reach a total of 100,000 coins. There’s the usual options, graphics, sound and game keys. The graphics are nice and come with a few graphical options like resolution, fps (no limit or 60), visual effects, shadows, vsync etc. As for audio, there’s sound effects, ambience and game sounds when zoomed in to the map. If you’re like me and you like to remap your game keys, you won’t be able to do that from the usual wasd etc. Positives • Easy and uncomplicated to play • Nice graphics • Achievements Negatives • Audio options reset each time you start the game • Tutorial text could be more visible (hard to read even after visiting Specsavers) • Can’t remap keys • No cards yet Create your own town, jobs and keep your people happy in this small-town builder game. 7/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! The game is decent, although quite minimalist. But it leaves an impressive amount of trash in the Windows registry :s (check out HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Red Phoenix Studios\Poly Towns)
I just test this game for 20 minutes but I can already say this game has some big potential when you keep updating. But for now, 5$ is a good price for this game. - This game makes a lot of fun and you must think how to make a working city. Maybe some Quests should be added. - It just need some graphic improvements, better 3D models and some bug fixes (UI and other). - UI functions should be reworked (primarily the in-game buttons). So I can recommend to buy this game, because it makes a lot of fun, and I´m sure, with new updates it will make more fun. But the developers of this game should rework some things and I hope they can manage it.
I love city builders, esp simple ones. But I didn't fully understand what was happening in my city, which made it really difficult to play. - Every 10 seconds, resources deplete, and the number required is shown on your top bar. So 180 food was going away every 10 seconds. I had 3 farms, each producing 100 food each 10 seconds. I should have an enormous surplus of food and never need to worry about it, correct? And yet my food was constantly falling dangerously low. I think maybe the distance people have to travel to their job matters somehow, but it was never explained, and rearranging job paths and trying to guesstimate from the numbers what was happening was really frustrating. - After planting a building, there is no way to look at its info panel again. You can plant another one to see the info screen, then cancel it, or upgrade a building nearby to see the upgrade info, then cancel... But that's incredibly tedious, and once you run out of room, it's not exactly an option. - What causes fires?? Who knows?? - Does having 3 houses connected to 1 job speed up production? Maybe? It's impossible to tell. - Why are you required to plant mines on rocks, but you can't plant woodcutters on forests? - Why does the mine work so incredibly slowly, slower than all the other buildings in my city? Other issues: - Typos in the menus - You can't switch to another type of building to build... You have to close the build menu and re-open it, which is just obnoxious. - Visibility in my city is ridiculous. I've tried numerous combos of sky/ground tint and sometimes it's clear, other times there's a weird blue haze over everything and at night the town lights can't penetrate it so it's impossible to see. There's no settings to improve this. I adore city builders and this could have been a very cute, fun game, but the confusing guesswork made it impossible to enjoy. I'm glad I got it as part of a humble bundle deal, because it's absolutely not worth it.
Really cool game! Still not very polished but I am sure it will be in a very small time! Cool game and congrats RPS for making such a great game!
Has a good premise as a casual city builder but there are too many bugs in the UI and game play for me to recommend it.
I like the idea of the game: you have a limited grid and you try to make the best town possible within the limits. The problem is that there just isn't much to it at all. Took me a whole lot of 2 minutes to figure out the most efficient way to build things so you never will have any issues. If it was more extended and if all the random UI bugs get fixed this could be a fun game. But in the state it is right now it is not and considering it was last updated in 2018 I can't see the bugs ever getting fixed. Linux version of the game works without any issues.
Poly Towns is a small Indie game. It is a mini city building game with elements of an idle game. The most of the time I played this game was during class. It is worth buying for a few euro at the steam sale. I recommend the game. + Happy art style/graphics. + Easy steam achievements. - No difficulty setting. - Some anoying bugs. - low replay value.
I uninstalled it after a couple minutes. The UI just frustrates me so much. You can't see how much the spendings/earnings from a building will change if you upgrade. You can't see how much an upgrade will cost. You have to right-click before you change the type of building in a menu? I think?
