In this game every case begins with what appears to be a straightforward murder, but by the time the credits roll, you'll have uncovered conspiracies, exposed countless lies, and somehow cross examined witnesses ranging from hardened criminals to parrots. The series constantly finds new ways to surprise you without losing sight of the mystery at its core. The gameplay revolves around two distinct phases. During investigations you'll examine crime scenes, question witnesses, and collect evidence piece by piece. The real excitement begins once you step into the courtroom. Every contradiction you uncover feels earned, and presenting the exact piece of evidence that dismantles a witness's testimony is just as satisfying on the final case as it is on the first. Few games have made me feel as clever as Ace Attorney does when everything finally clicks into place. Maya, Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and the rest of the recurring cast quickly become characters you genuinely look forward to seeing again. Every case introduces a new collection of unforgettable witnesses, many of whom manage to be both hilarious and suspicious at the same time. One witness might have you laughing at their absurd testimony, while the next scene completely changes the tone as the truth behind the murder slowly comes into focus. The presentation naturally reflects the series' Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS origins, but the updated visuals hold up wonderfully. Character sprites remain incredibly expressive despite their simplicity, and the soundtrack is still one of Capcom's best. Hearing the Pursuit theme kick in after discovering the contradiction you've been searching for never gets old. However, some investigations can feel a little aimless, occasionally requiring you to revisit locations or examine objects until the game decides you're ready to progress. There are also moments where the game expects one very specific line of reasoning, even if you've already figured out the truth yourself. Those moments can be frustrating, but they're thankfully the exception rather than the rule. If you enjoy murder mysteries, visual novels, or simply solving well written puzzles, I can't recommend the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy enough.
