Reviews

Pascal's Wager is almost a textbook example of the mid-2010s “premium mobile games” school of titles that later made the jump to PC. It bears many telltale signs of its mobile gaming roots: less-than-stellar assets made worse by stilted lighting; the awkward lag between menu navigation and gameplay transitions; and the clunky way your character handles that reveals its mobile-first design philosophy. Every movement feels slightly detached, as if the game was built around the limitations of a mobile interface before being retrofitted for more traditional controls. All of these issues compound and contribute to its inadequacy when held against its contemporaries on the new platform, ultimately causing it to pale in comparison. These problems run much deeper than a simple lack of production value, as they affect the very feel of the game. Compared to other titles in the genre like Demon's Souls or Mortal Shell, which feature slower character animations that feel like they've been deliberately designed to facilitate their combat flow, Pascal's Wager feels much more like the result of technical limitations rather than an intentional design choice. The weird delay between input and on-screen response makes it feel as though your character is receiving commands via text message, stripping combat encounters of the responsiveness and feedback generally needed for soulslike combat to feel engaging and satisfying. It is hard to appreciate the game's level design or enemy encounters when everything feels like it is constantly moving underwater, and even its better ideas, such as the insanity mechanic, are drowned out by the stodgy gameplay that permeates the entire experience. At the end of the day, Pascal's Wager is a good reminder of why many mobile titles of its era struggled to make an impact after coming to PC. It has the markings of a decent indie title, but the experience is significantly diminished by its failure to meet the baseline expectations of the PC platform, ultimately leaving it as little more than a cautionary tale of what not to do when bringing titles across platforms.
