About
Explore lost oceans and research a world that vanished millions of years ago.
Paleo Dive is an atmospheric VR diving adventure that takes you through more than 500 million years of Earth’s history. Explore five handcrafted underwater environments—from a Cambrian lagoon and colorful reefs to dense kelp forests and the darkness of the deep sea.
Move your arms naturally to swim through the water, collect discoveries, and pull yourself along suitable surfaces. Keep an eye on your oxygen and return to the research base in time. On Normal difficulty, dangerous creatures can attack, and a failed dive will cost you everything you discovered during that expedition.
Your wristwatch displays your oxygen, depth, water pressure, and remaining collectibles. A holographic map and an unlockable Finder help you navigate your surroundings.
Photograph prehistoric animals with your underwater camera. Capture each creature from four different angles to unlock a rotatable 3D specimen in your archive. Your photographs are permanently stored in a personal gallery.
Use the DNA scanner to collect additional research samples. Once a species has been fully documented through photography and its genome has been completely decoded, you can release it into your walk-in aquarium.
Collect fossil and map fragments, coins, and rare Moon Rocks. Recovered items and completed research unlock new diving areas, while coins allow you to improve your swimming performance, oxygen capacity, and equipment.
Create your own loadout using the camera, DNA scanner, headlamp, Finder, and oxygen bottle. Finding Moon Rocks also unlocks a Night Mode for each area.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & impressions here: https://youtu.be/-FwZm1CJEWU So this game is like Subside. So if you like Subside, you should also like this Paleolithic spin on the Subside formula. This time, instead of looking for coins or little toy collectibles on the sea floor, you're taking photos of the sea life and collecting DNA samples. You will need to do enough of them to open up the new underwater maps. There are 5 different maps, including day and night dives. There's also an aquarium where you can release certain of the creatures that you've documented. You can underwater dive just like in Subside, basically doing arm swimming motions to easily traverse the water. However, you're also able to traverse using the left and right joystick. So if you want a less physically demanding experience, then this game has got you covered. You can do upgrades to dive underwater longer or swim faster or extend the length of your batteries. You can also unlock equipment like the DNA scanner or object finder or the headlamp. Now, I do think that Subside has higher visual fidelity than Paleo Dive. In my opinion, Subside just has better lighting, textures, and a hyper-realism to the experience. The maps were also bigger and deeper and just had more character to them, as well as interactions to discover (like a clam running away if you tried to get near it). There are fish that scurry away in this experience, but it seems most creatures were oblivious to your presence. Objects seemed to have a more plastic look to them as well in Paleo Dive. Lastly, I thought finding some of the objectives were very unclear. We definitely need better visual markers or UI that lets us know what exactly we need. Granted, I was playing on the higher difficulty level. Maybe I should have played on easy. Paleo Dive is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 5090, I was getting mostly 72 fps on the first map with all the graphics settings on high. However, on the second map, I was getting only around 65 fps. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs. You can play comfortably seated. Overall, I think Subside is a notch above Paleo Dive. However, that's still a compliment for Paleo Dive as Subside is the best in its class. I enjoyed Paleo Dive. I think it's a very good experience. My only real gripe is that I think it needs better direction. Taking 4 different perspective photos of a fish swimming faster than you is probably not the best thing. I also have no idea what objects I'm supposed to find on the Coral Reef map. I found them all on the first map. We need better visuals markers or better UI to guide us along the right path. Rate 7/10. If you love Subside, you should like this one too. If you don't like Subside, I can almost guarantee this game won't change your mind! These games are more about the experience, rather than gameplay. Or to put it more simply, it's more about the journey than the destination.
I bought this game! Preformance is crap, but the basic gameplay seems very nice, the fact you can get a 20 minute air tank, I hope means the later maps are nice and big. Edit, I see the developer has released 3 patches in first day, dealing with common complaints, that does seem promising
Bad performance with a 5090, Index controllers not fully function I could swim up but not forward. I can't see anyway to disable this overlay which need to mimic some kind of diving mask but all it does for me is make the screen looks dirty especially with a high end vr headset (Pimax dream air). Also when going up for air there is too much excessive water effect falling down the lens. Camera does not work, shows no picture. It could be because I run Sboys3 Drivers not sure if that would cause this problem. Not recommending this one for now, it has potential but it will need some big fixes.
Ok I'll start with the positive: This game shows some major degrees of love for prehistory and ocean exploration, the swimming feels pretty good, and the mechanics like the finder and the camera can use improvement but are still solid. Night exploration was spot on. And most models look great even up close. Now for the negative: Ok let's address the AI elephemt in the room, I don't like him, personally the ai images that appear in achievements, some models apparently (couldn't spot the specific ones) and the images in the item shop (which btw don't match the in game items at all) put me off, because it's just not my thing. In addition I was practically begging for more info on the creatures I encountered, maybe *I* just didn't gather enough info like DNA on the creatures and that's why it didn't unlock, but whatever I feel like it should just be available. Overall if your not into the AI thing and don't wanna support it then avoide this game, but other wise I had a pretty good time, I audably gasped when I saw the Leviathanochelys skeletons, and went crazy when I saw him physically, those were some great moments. Happy shopping :D
Quite an amazing experience, if you have an RTX 5090 ;-) Compared to Subside, performance is much worse, but graphics may be equally beautiful. So the recommended RTX 4070 is no joke. I think I read that this experience was made by a 21-year-old single dev. If that's true, then this is an impressive achievement. Still this experience feels like early access, much more optimization is needed - and fps really need to be twice as high. I tested the game using Index res 200%, High in-game settings with TAA using an RTX 3090. I could barely run the game, but motion smoothing was a lifesaver. Paleo Dive needs DLSS - and a setting to use DLSS Auto - to truly work: just like done in EXD and Madison VR. The game also includes very cumbersome swimming, and lacks an option for smooth turning. The game only supports snap rotations. Will test more later, but my current rating would be 6.5/10. And 3/10 if you got a slower gpu than RTX 3080 or 4070.
I don't dislike this game per se, but the underwater camera effect is too much for me. Please make the visibility cleaner, no dirt, less sunrays, and the wavy warp effect doesn't make much sense for underwater goggles. If this gets patched or at least made a toggle I will gladly enjoy this game :) Runs great on my system tho (5090). Edit: patched, good work, dev :)
I’ve been having a lot of fun in this game. it’s nice looking im scared of everything but I really like it so far. I did wish it mad the flashlight easier to use but that’s a skill issue on my part. It needs lots of room to play the constant hitting of the edges of the area dose get irritating so make sure you have more of a round area. To swim you need to move your arms so make sure there is nothing breakable arm level.
Ok, I've played roughly four hours into this game, time logged in Meta not Steam directly so its off here. I'm taking it slow to really look around. I am extremely impressed by the work of this SOLO developer. The fact that this ONE person brought to life five prehistoric biomes where you can literally swim with .. #everythingthatwantstoeatyou or #lookaroundateverythingthatwantstoeatyou (normal and easy modes) right out of the gate is impressive. I do scuba so some of the swim mechanics feel wrong to me (we tend to keep our arms quiet) but, honestly, I don't mind if I have to use swim strokes. Its a great concept executed on very well by the Dev! This is an incredible opportunity to look into prehistoric underwater worlds far beyond what I could imagine. Would love to be able to move myself vertically a little easier (trim - with less arm waving needed, I mean) but hey, maybe a future feature? Who knows... its awesome regardless. Then again maybe I just haven't worked out that mechanic yet. My machine is an older mid-tier gaming machine and my headset is an Oculus Rift S (read also old lol) - and it all works just fine. I sometimes have to remind the floor to be the floor so I don't end up with virtual sand up to my waist but that is more a "me" issue, not a game issue. The aquarium concept is fantastic and collecting pictures and DNA is a fresh concept. The dive watch is cool as a piece of tech one would normally have irl, so love the add here. So Dev, don't mind the whiners. Look for solid feedback and if it makes sense, use it. If not, don't put time into it. I think you are going to find a solid following with this and people like myself who will be looking for other projects you are working on in the future. Awesome work.
