I have a particular love for game experiences that teach me about subjects connected to our world. Never Alone (Kisima Innitchuna) is based on the traditional Inupiaq tale, Kunuuksaayuka. This game can be played alone or co-operatively (local only). I played the entire game in one sitting with my partner. It made for a fun evening game session. Never Alone is a platformer with two main characters. I'm not sure how they're controlled while playing solo but with co-op, each player controls one of them. Players do not get a choice of the characters. Player One plays as the human character and Player Two gains control of the non-human character. The controls are simple though occasionally don't feel responsive. Overall I thought this was a beautiful adaptation that would make for a lovely afternoon gaming session with a friend as it took less than two hours to complete (and that's with quite a few game overs). I recommend this game to those interested in multiplayer experiences, short games, storytelling, animal characters, or wintry settings.

A kind of plain platformer but really shines due to the cultural focus it has on native tribes of Alaska. The platforming is mostly alright and, unless you have a co-op partner, has you controlling two characters. Though the AI will take control of one to follow you, you must switch between the two to overcome obstacles. The AI does it’s best but there are moments it kind of freaks out and can even cause the character to die due to poor pathing. Which leads to the sincerely awful noises the surviving character makes when the human character dies. It’s just a bit too high pitched and whiney. Though the gameplay is nothing special, the focus on the native tribes’ mythology for the story and the rewards of documentary videos really gives the game it’s charm. Despite the game using subtitles for the narrator, it really needs it for the actual documentaries as I often had trouble hearing the people talk.

太差劲了真的玩不下去,能想到过的地方给你上操作难度,游戏也极其无聊,卸载了
I think the main problem this game has is just an aesthetic problem. Like it's certainly interesting and captivating at certain parts, but Never Alone ironically never grabs my attention for long enough too care. Do I think this was an interesting take on a foreign culture implementation in a game? Ya, but interest is left at the door when it comes to nearly everything else about it. Perhaps it's my bitter heart when it comes to any game with co-op play or maybe it's the way the game kinda shoves the culture importance down your throat when you're just going thru it. Either way, the game constantly feels like it shifts gears from being fun, feeling important, and boredom. The main focus of the games puzzles is using each characters special skills to continue the path forward so the girl can reach her goal, often through various forms of platforming. The fox really isn't given proper purpose however, and is just kinda magical with no explanation. Not a problem with it's gameplay side, but it certainly is confusing as a story plot point. Hopefully this is addressed in the DLC, but for now it's narrative writing that honestly doesn't make sense. Aside from that, you visit a few different areas throughout the game, and face several different obstacles that will often require you to use the two characters one after another. It's fairly slow when playing through this game in single player mode, but it's probably meant more for co-op play. Regardless of the slower pacing, the main game takes roughly 2 hours to beat, and while most games tend to feel short given the length, for this one it felt right. By all means, I don't think this game is bad, but it's fairly flawed in what it wanted to do. Not a lot of colorful or interesting backgrounds, very little challenge, forgetful soundtrack, and a mediocre story to tie it all together. It's not even the cultural parts that get me annoyed with it, but rather all the aesthetic choices in the game that just makes it unappealing. Like where is the color in any of this? With simple white shades and backgrounds you can do a lot with color simply being on screen every once in a while. On top of that every NPC in this game is super ugly looking, and doesn't really match what the two titular characters style is. Add that all together with an open road journey the game takes us across as a mildly challenging puzzle platformer with a nonsensical journey, and it really makes you wonder why you did play this game to began with. Honestly what I think this all accumulates to is that Never Alone: Kisima Ingitchuna just played it too safe with it's style and representation of the culture it set out to cover. Too many odd design choices, too much out of the place journey stops, and mostly just mildly decent puzzle platformer action. If you could play this game co-op, I think you'll have a better time, as for me though? I just had a time with it.
Very annoying that the achievements don't work.
Imma be honest with you. The reason why I liked this has more to do with it's themes and mini documentary quality than it's game qualities. It's just too trial and error for my taste.
