This one is more like a Neutral rating for me. I really like the setting - the game is quite pretty and it sounds great. The story is fine. However, the pacing is awful. You spend SO much time either talking to characters, waiting for a character to send you something, or trying to trigger an event. The clock is squirrely as it's not obvious at first when you're allowed to set the time. (Hint: Nancy only does things in the evening/night, you pretty much have to pick 7 pm if you want to go to the next day) The puzzles themselves are not my cup of tea. I'm fine with sudoku and nonagrams, and they're not hard puzzles, but for whatever reason they made them super long in this particular game. Also, as mentioned in other reviews, the voice acting is Not Good. If you're familiar at all with Japanese you will be able to pick out the only Japanese person on the voice cast as soon as you hear them, as they are also the only one who consistently pronounces the words correctly.
love it

Nancy Drew: Shadow at the Water’s Edge is still a nostalgic gem! Recently, I’ve already sunk 10+ hours into this game again as an adult, and it’s just as magical as it was in my childhood. The atmosphere, the setting... Everything still holds up beautifully. Characters & Environment ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 = 4.5/5 The setting is fantastic, from exploring the subway on our way to pachinko to wandering the ryokan. As for characters, Yumi is still as energetic, and Nancy is as iconic as ever. Her voice actress, Lani Jean Minella, brings so much warmth, curiosity, and tradition to the classic Nancy we all know. (Fun fact: she also voiced Eve in Mass Effect 3! I'm a huge Mass Effect fan.) The mechanical cat Suki is a nice touch, and the little cultural center inside the ryokan adds charm and personality to the setting. Puzzles ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 = 4.5/5 The bento box puzzle? I'm kind of addicted lol You also get fun brain teasers like monograms, renograms, and sudoku. Even the more “okayyyyyy this is how we do this?” puzzles, like logging into Yumi’s computer, are quirky in a good way. Story ⭐⭐⭐⭐ = 4/5 No spoilers, but my main gripe is definitely with the culprit because a few choices there made me go "hmmm" a bit. True to classic Nancy Drew games style, the characters are mostly part of the mystery instead of ones you're meant to "fall in love with." That’s totally fine, and they’re fun to interact with when they're not annoyed with Nancy (she does grate their nerves a lot) lol Still, the overall mystery is engaging and atmospheric (really like the spookiness, and this may be the eeriest ND game in the series). Bonus Points! Being able to end the day and grade papers in Nancy’s room, take photos with her phone, change her phone settings and collect phone charms, and design your own avatars? Those little touches make the experience feel extra personal and cozy. CONCLUSION: 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is absolutely one of the stronger entries in the entire Nancy Drew collection. Nancy Drew games need to keep going! 💪💛
This is one of the longer, more difficult games (at least in my opinion). However, it is easily one of my favorites. PROS: Great music, difficult puzzles, immersive atmosphere, and decent storyline/characters. CONS: There are a lot of phone conversations (personal preference). Nancy is also extremely nosey and apathetic in the game.
I love this game, multiple types of mini games I love the scenario and the plot. Sometimes it's difficult but overall it's pretty balanced.
