A surprisingly good game - really nails the lovecraftian tones and topics, the game features a lot of written text, diaries, notes that expand the lore, backstory and build a really amazing atmosphere. The game's monsters are pretty unique, genuine otherwordly monstrous creatures that add so much style to the game. Music and animations are custom-made, also the game features really nice puzzles. As far as RPG/RPG elements go, you earn xp by killing enemies, or investigating things, achieving something with your skills, like in a tabletop pen and paper RPG. These experience points can be used to buy new skills or stats, allowing to uncover extra lore books and such with the skill of occult knowledge. Among previous reviews it was a reoccuring problem that the combat is really unforgiving - that can be true, and it's really easy to get on the bad end of a very-common confusion debuff, attacking your own team. (My semi-useless follower killed my main character 2 or 3 times, usually with a crit...) But in an update the developer introduced a "zero" combat difficulty that makes most of the fights absolutely trivial, minimizes the amount of consumables required, so they can be used on skills without issues, greatly helping players who would play the game for it's theme and story, than for the actual fighting. It's really good to see the easier combat difficulty in the game, as this way it opens up for people who like their lovecraftian thrills and exploring an abandoned asylum, without the punishing difficulty. I can totally recommend this, a very-well written little game.
Simple horror adventure. Play Yomawari instead.
I could have recommended the previous version without the 'remastered' combat. It just changed into a normal RPG with the caveat that you were now looking for ways to exploit whatever XP you could get, whenever you could get it. Purposely choosing skill gains in an order to get the most XP you can gain and such. Additionally, the Healing skills are way more valuable than their cost and turn healing items into things that are better off being exchanged for XP. I just don't know how to fix that without making the problem worse. It's not a 'bad' game, and quite frankly doesn't deserve the negative recommendation, but there is no 'meh' option for more of the same. Otherwise, the extra DLC that was added did help the overall thematic elements of the game.
----------------------- Mythos: The Beginning - Director's Cut is another victim of customs, a horror game could be interesting with turn-based combat, but 3 or more fights in each room after the first monster appears? The game started out very interesting, choosing the character's profession and skills, exploring the asylum and getting information, even the suspension of the first lurking monster was cool, but then after he finally attacks you the game loses all its appeal, the " horrible monster" becomes as boring as a slime or mouse in a common role-playing game. Is it a bad game? No. But if you're going to play a horror game with combat I would recommend something where the combat brings more tension like Evil Within and doesn't break the immersion of the game.
Saw this game on sale so thought I would give it a go. I know the dev and have seen how hard he works on his games over the years. The amount of work and detail shown here is unlike a lot of other RPG maker games. I like the horror theme of the game but many parts of the game take you out of it. I hate hard/easy modes in games, there should just be a pure mode the game was made to be played in. This goes along with the rest of the spam text that takes away from the horror theme of the game. What I really liked was the amount of voice acting here, very bold to try and add so much of it to a RPG Maker game and I think it really stands out strong and loved it. The jump scares got me everytime which was both sad and funny. The amount of combat you are forced to do seems kinda bad, I like the combat but having random enemies in small hallways that you really can't avoid seems pointless. I think random fight and story fights would have been better. I liked how much your choice of char affects the game. I would say this game is worth it on sale and hope to see some more content updates for it.
I recommend The Walking Dead: Season 2, WITH some caveats. GRAPHICS 8/10 Pleasingly pixelated. Final Fantasy style graphics are used in combat (eg. no animations, just effect overlay to show attacks). SOUND/MUSIC 8/10 I liked the sound and music very much and found it quite evocative. CONTROLS 10/10 The game was clearly made with RPG Maker or a similar clone so the controls are perfect. PLOT 8/10 The locations are diverse and well illustrated. The story as written (ignoring combat, gameplay, etc.) is very Lovecraftian and well written. Lovers of Lovecraft, such as myself will be quite pleased :3. GAMEPLAY 5/10 This game is the opposite of fun. Enemies in later areas are impossible to beat unless you "cheat" and only use the first save room to save your game. Every time you enter a save room the cost of upgrades increases to the point where it becomes impossible to upgrade yourself enough to fight enemies. If you do cheat then the game becomes ridiculously easy. A happy medium would have been nice (eg. make it possible to win without cheating ;p). I sense they were going for a Resident Evil style experience where you have to avoid enemies but it is impossible to avoid all of the enemies or use alternate solutions (bosses, etc.) making the game combat heavy yet ridiculously,,, avoidance based \0_o/. I was having quite the time passing the first boss until I figured out that I had to beat every single enemy in order to level up enough to stand a chance against more powerful enemies. FINAL VERDICT = Pick a play style and stick with it }:|. OVERALL 6/10 C-
korku temalı klasik rpg maker oyunu konsepti farklı geldi fakat çok karmaşık işlenmiş olmuş hikayeyi oturtmak zor türü sevenler denesin onlar sevecektir
This is an adventure "survival horror" game with a Lovecraft theme. It's an extremely bad treatment of the genre, and it's an insult to fans everywhere. Technical problems abound. Mythos the Beginning plays a lot like a game from 1992. When I first ran it, I thought I'd picked up some abandonware/retro game I hadn't previously heard about. Unfortunately, after some research, the game really was published first in 2014. It has pixel graphics and only supports 4:3 aspect ratio - you cannot change the resolution of the game, and the inputs are mostly controller based (despite the game having no console release!). If the low effort technical implementation isn't enough to scare you away, the rest will. You also need to enable your Windows Firewall to run this game, because bad game design is bad. Graphics are really bad - they're pixel level, clunky, and of course the 4:3 technical limitation just makes things worse. Animations are almost comically bad - you have about 3 different frames for walking (left arm forward, arms middle, right arm forward), which just looks terrible. Extremely low effort and clunky. Gameplay is fairly pedestrian but they also make your life hard by adding unskippable slow dialogue and intro text. Considering all the other problems you have to go through to get into the game, being presented with a very average adventure game just doesn't make all the hassle worth it. To add insult to injury, they actually want you to pay them money for this poor experience. Impossible to recommend. I hope the developers get eaten by a Shoggoth.
Thank you, thank you so much for the update, I have really enjoyed the changes that were made. Playing through this time has been just as enjoyable but much less frustrating, thank you again!!!!
