Clearly a labor of love and incredibly immersive. I had a blast trying to solve every last mystery in this game. At times some of the puzzle solutions were a bit obtuse (categorizing the artifacts was the worst offender) and I wish the game made some of the gameplay elements clearer such as using blank sheets of paper for footprints. The setting is amazing though and the detective work was so fun. I'd love to see this same system get refined even further with a future game. Please keep making games like this!!
A fresh take on the investigation genre which is overall excellent despite some minor flaws with the controls. The very ordinary setting with some supernatural elements is an excellent design choice, as it extends the plausible answers you can speculate during play. The designed mystery fits well to the visual aesthetic, which is in itself part of the gameplay since it makes finding small things in the levels much fairer. I liked it a lot, and while it is not on the level of obra dinn, it is a worthy addition to that legacy.

Amazing retro-inspired adventure game that has you doing the hard part of detective work with no handholding and takes cues from games like Return of the Obra Dinn and the Golden Idol series. What starts as an already intriguing initial case becomes a much more sinister overarching mystery that demands quite a bit from the player to truly figure out and complete the case files. The characters you meet are all great and quirky and react to almost every piece of evidence / new development in the investigation. A good chunk of my time spent investigating was me gunning it to a character on the opposite end of the museum because I really wanted to see what they had to say about this thing I just found. The extensive worldbuilding done through in-universe references, dialogue, and reading materials really make the setting feel lived in and Mystery of the Malign at times feels like one game in a series that had already started. So much thought had gone into things like the ancient civilizations and analogues to real-world urban legends that all connect nicely. As much as I loved the game, it's not without its faults. For starters the walk speed is ridiculously slow. You're gonna be holding down the shift key any time you make a move. Another thing is that your only personal light source is your lighter, and the light is so weak that it won't make a noticeable difference in helping you navigate certain sections of the game. Also not having the option to bind keys was a little bit of a bummer because I didn't like pressing I to open my inventory or O to open the other notebook. I ended up relying on pressing Tab to access all three menus and then having to press Tab twice to close the menu interface. All in all this is exactly the kind of detective/mystery game I keep refreshing the steam catalog hoping I'll find, and now that I beat the game I'm a little disappointed that I have to go back to searching.
I am absolutely in love with the nostalgia and vibes of this, while also gathering up all the various pieces of the puzzles and putting everything together. The game keeps surprising me with the turns its taking, and I'm having an absolute blast going along for the ride. It's so much more than I expected, and best experienced with as little info as possible. If you like the genre, you'll like this. I only wish I could move a bit faster, the "running" is dreadfully slow, but also fits the aesthetic so I'm not too mad.
Really enjoyed this! Thankful that there's multiple ways to solve things and that very little is missable. Thank you to those who create guides--they helped me find small things I was missing!
a very good obra'dinn when I see one !
I really enjoyed my time with this game. For what little there is, it's a surprisingly thorough and logical detective game. However it's very clearly unfinished. The ending is very abrupt and unsatisfying. This game feels like the opening chapter of a much larger experience that was abandoned. I can see why. There is an impressive commitment to the deductive reasoning in this game, that was likely exhausting to maintain for what i assume to be a very small team of devs. I would really love to see more from gameplay supremacy. Clearly a lot of talent on display here.
Very well made. Super good atmosphere, I loved exploring the environments in this game. Some of the puzzles are difficult at first but eventually everything falls into place.
Excellent detective game, requires you to actually apply deduction and common sense instead of being spoonfed. Very similar to Obra Dinn, includes many of the same strengths and mechanical weaknesses.
Such an awesome and solid mystery game. Requires some real thought and actual logic, but it's also not so punishing as to be impossible; a lot of puzzles you can solve by approaching it from a few different angles, and the game is built well enough to avoid most cases of missing clues or items entirely. There's a ton of bonus worldbuilding that gives you the sense of living in a full, fleshed out world even though you only see a few rooms of it. Also the characters are really funny - to be a fly on the wall in Christofer and Emely's house; how on earth did they get together?? Totally recommend for anyone who wants a tightly-written and rewarding mystery puzzle game.
