About
You are Muffles, a surgically mangled inmate of the Maddox Prison System with a stolen past and the power to wear the faces of others. Freshly sentenced to life in prison with no memory of the crimes you’ve committed, you must go on a journey spanning a chain of prison islands to confront the Warden and discover the truth of your past.
From Mt. Hyup's frozen mountaintops to the sweltering desert of Jangus, travel the Maddox Nation over five gripping chapters full of twists, mysteries, and shenanigans. Gather allies, defeat your foes, and find out who you really are.

At Maddox Prison, every inmate is surgically altered to make their face and body match the crimes they committed. Meet a colorful cast of characters and rip their faces off.

Muffles: Faceless inmate with no idea how they ended up in prison. Did the surgeons really need to sew their mouth shut?

Scarlet: Pseudo-religious figurehead who has promised freedom in exchange for the Warden's head.

Shatter: Gang leader of the WARDEN KILLERS. He's mostly just recruited Pettys for now- but just you wait!

Constant: Anxious android security officer. He's gotten a bit addicted to shocking himself to help clear his mind. I'm sure that will end well.

Pettys: Petty criminals rendered spineless after a little soft lobotomy.

Half-Croc: Mostly teeth, anger, and a childhood filled with poor role models.

Engage in turn-based deckbuilding combat with no grinding or random encounters. Unlock new cards by collecting the faces and memories of other inmates, then mix and match to create your own unique playstyle.

Muffles' is a delightful RPG! If you enjoy the free first chapter, I recommend getting the other four for sure. The art style is very neat, but it can get a tad limited at times with some of the overworld sprites. Fairly diverse deck building archetypes that are useful for different fights. The gameplay is fairly easy, but there's definitely a very challenging fight or two in there. The writing and characters were charming. Looking to forward to what Bossy releases next!
So, I just beat this game, and the Discord has told me it is tradition to review all the chapters on steam after completion. So, here's the first part. SPOILERS(for just this chapter) The first chapter of Muffles' Life Sentence sets the game up for success. It introduces many interesting characters, from the hilarious Dee to the aloof rival Shatter. The combat took a bit to get used to(I thought having any % of Guard naturally increased your defense instead of needing to build it all up) but was really fun once I understood things, with some pretty useful cards from the inmates you encounter. Fathom is probably my favorite enemy, it was fun dealing with his fear cards. The atmosphere is by far the best part of this game. This chapter drives home the real terror of this game: Being in the same place as some of the most dangerous people in the world, and unable to communicate. My only complaint is, like most of the game, it's not always clear what you should do, but I love the way the game connects objectives. Oh, and Constant is a sweetie. The game still improves from here, luckily. BRIBE COMPLETED

If I had to describe it in a sentence i'd say "Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass set in Superjail". Quite an unique game you won't regret playing.
I could go on forever about how much I love this damn game. And trust me, I've played A LOT of games. This is one of THOSE games. It's NEARLY the perfect version of what's it's doing. Muffles is a linear RPG with a good story, memorable characters, a really cool face switching mechanic. It's dark, there's mystery, but it's also funny. I'm bad about skipping text in games, but I read EVERY WORD in this game. One part I kept finding funny is: As Muffles, you can't speak. Only make muffled nosies. And yet you ALWAYS get a text prompt to choose what you're going to say in convo BUT IT NEVER MATTERS BECAUSE THEY CAN'T UNDERSTAND YOU! I fell for this more times than I'd like to admit. And it's hilarious. OK SOME SLIGHT NITPICKS: 1. The text in combat is a just too fast. Many times it flashed on screen and I have no idea what it said. There was one time I fighting a bunch of enemies at once and I used a card that attacks every enemy but I didn't read it ALSO does 10 damage TO YOU for every enemy - that part was my fault - but I didn't know what killed me until laster bc the text was going by too fast. 2. I think Beserk might be broken? I beat the 2nd nightmare easily and I had 0 health for like 1/2 the fight. But I never used it again after that. 3. I felt a bit lost at the start. So I just wondered aimlessly - luckily I was curious about the prison and everything going on. But by the time I finished 1st chapter I was hooked! I never felt lost again. The game really puts on the gas from chapter 2 on. 4. I also wish combat was a SMDIGE harder. I'm on the final chapter right now and the enemies are putting up a bit of a fight, but I still beat them without too much trouble. But maybe it gets harder. Or maybe my cards are just OP. 5. This is more of a personal preference, but the humor goes a bit too silly at times. There's a whole part where you're solving a murder on a train - which I was HYPE for - but it wasn't as thrilling as I thought. And the murderer turned out to be... totally ridiculous. That went a bit overboard for me tbh. I can easily buy into this twisted reality, but when it goes Looney Toons it's a step too far. And some stuff with Dee did that too. But I do like Dee tho. Anyway, I freakin love this game. 9/10
The indiest of indie games ever indied! This game is so well-written (it's very funny), the pixel art is grotesquely beautiful and the music is tremendous. There's a living, vivid world to explore and a huge cast of remarkable characters to meet. And the deckbuilding combat is rather good too. An idiosyncratic little gem!
Great vibes, memorable characters I didn't like the deckbuilding aspect too much but I stayed for whole rest
TL;DR
Promising story setup that is sadly hold back by terrible combat, atrocious interface and boring deckbuilding mechanics --------------------------------
Pros:

Overall look and feel

Nice art style
Music is decent

Story and world building

Story setup is promising
--------------------------------
Cons:

Gameplay

As if deckbuilder weren't already boring this one however manages to be insanely boring, even for deckbuilder standards. At least for the first few hours. No idea how it evolves over time

Story and world building

It takes some time until the story starts to progress

Bugs + missing QoL

Interface is horrible. Weird keybinds, no keybinds at all for many actions
Solidly one of the best little RPGs out there! The art is peak, the writing is peak, the battle system is really fun to mess around with, music is also peak, trying to remember if there's anything I forgot, either way, it's a great game, and very reasonably priced for the amount of content you get. Very very worth it, make Deesus happy and try the first episode at least <3
Coolest game I have played yet, love the style and the game plot so unique!
What a treat of a hidden gem, though I do hope it blows up in popularity like undertale. Story and world-building is very well written, with enough twists and hooks to keep me engaged throughout and there's more than enough leftover to hope for a sequel. The cast/characters were the highlights of this game, although there's a few more interesting ones(doll and fortune) that I wish were developed just a little more. Also thought the decision to make the protag faceless and unable to speak very unique, collecting other companions to speak for you. As for the gameplay, I was initially reluctant to pick up muffles MLS since I'm not a fan of deckbuilders, but the gameplay design felt very tightly done?(for lack of a better word) Very much appreciate that this game was accessible to non-deckbuilder fans, since the story/writing is the main appeal. Fans of deckbuilders should still have a lot of fun though, maybe not chapter 1, but definitely with the option to go crazy with mixed decks in later chapters and optional nightmare bosses/NG+ runs Looking forward to bossy dee's next game, though I heard from discord that it is horror and i dislike that genre too :( RPG with horror elements maybe please?
