Very good small horror game, love everything about it

genuinely one of the most terrifying games i have ever played in my life, and I never get scared of horror games. i almost pissed myself repeatedly. definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys being terrified and not sleeping for 4 nights. 10/10

I've been thinking of writing an essay about gameplay as a narrative tool and MOTHER has a lot to this -- you have to manually do a lot of things, like carrying each and every box from the apartment to the corridor one of the many nights you're going to spend during the game, to express the mundaneness of the task at hand and how exhausted is the protagonist about everything. In fact, everything is a chore -- taking your kids to bed separately while they're playing too late at night or being downright annoying express the hardships of being a mother during the worst time of grief; giving them cookies that you find in plates on the floor depicts how she's barely able to take care of them; and even the screen shake (that I know it's not gameplay per se but juice, that adds to the game feel overall too) when you receive a notification on your phone shows how stressed is the mother about everything. There's more things, like having to manually board the windows instead of having it made automatically helps to build tension, making you balance the time to make the house safe at the same time that you leave the kids exposed to the monster; the fact that every night the game shows you the percentage of wellbeing each of the kids have because the task at hand is survival more than anything else and the gun not having a crosshair build to the sensation of vulnerability and inexperience of the protagonist about handling a gun. There's a lot to love about this game. It quickly stands out from the sea of indie horror games by being genuinely creepy and an absolute challenge to go through instead of the walk in the park that most horror games tend to be now, again reinforcing the idea of the hardships of the situation through the difficulty itself, that sometimes can get daunting. But at the same time the last stretch trivializes the first encounters with the monster by pretty much spamming their attacks to the point of generating frustration over fear and making me drop the game since I had no reason to keep playing since both kids were dead and all I had left was to kill Tommy while escaping the other creature. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna enjoy this game much, much more a second go around some day but as of now, I can't keep playing while expecting to have a good time.

Almost perfect horror game. 15 nights was just too long. Could've shortened it to like maybe 10 and it still would've been a masterpiece. Would absolutely recommend to horror fans.
