I remember seeing the "How we made this game" videos on Youtube. Thought it was neat and decided to buy it back in the day. I played through it once but never actually tried examining it until now. Makes you appreciate what NES devs had to go through to make such a simple game. As a game it is really not that interesting, it is really well designed and fun. And it is visibly made with love. Four player Co-Op is fun. But more importantly is what it influenced. It did bring widespread acknowledgement that people did want "authentic new games for old consoles". In a sense consider this a trailblazer in an artistic movement. It really is trying to be an authentic NES game with its design philosophy and limitations. Don't expect something on the scale of Shovel Knight because of this. This includes the NES ROM and the Unity version of the game. As a game alone it is really not worth 10 USD. Get it on a deep sale.
Small in size (literally; the game's original version is only 40 kilobytes!) but big in heart, Micro Mages is a love letter to old co-op arcade games and ticks off all the right boxes for a memorable old school experience.

This game is like the closest I will ever get to playing a game from the 90s (manely cuz I am afraid to pirate and also old game/game consoles are really expensive). This game has some of the best pixel graphics I have seen in a while it's really cool. The levels themselves are challanging but doable after enough pratice. I do wish there were more levels or even secret ones (maybe there is and I am just dumb but still). Overall I would give it a 10/10, would recommend if you are going for a nostalgic/just wanna play an old looking and feeling game.
For today's standards, it's okay. For NES standards, it's a technical marvel. Not really _too_ fun when playing alone, but I'm sure playing with friends would be fun
This game rocks hahaha very simple yet so much fun
Genuinely an adorable little masterpiece that doesn't get enough attention, I mean it's literally an nes game, you can even pull the rom from the game files to play on a modded nes classic, or a flash cartridge. This game deserves way more love for its tightly designed gameplay loop and controls, not to mention 4 player simultaneous co-op, simple controls, its surprisingly a great party game!
Micro Mages is an impressive example of how classic game design can remain fresh and entertaining when paired with thoughtful modern sensibilities. Developed by Morphcat Games and published by Morphcat Games UG, this retro-inspired platformer is much more than a nostalgic tribute. It is an authentic NES game built within the hardware limitations of the original console while also being available on Steam for modern audiences. Rather than relying solely on pixel art and chiptune music to evoke memories of the past, it embraces the philosophy of old-school game design by emphasizing responsive controls, rewarding challenge, and carefully crafted levels. The result is a platformer that feels timeless instead of outdated. The adventure follows a group of tiny spellcasters who climb through the dangerous Demon Fortress in pursuit of treasure while battling monsters, avoiding traps, and defeating powerful bosses. Although the premise is straightforward, it provides the perfect foundation for an experience built around fast-paced action and precision platforming. Each stage encourages players to move upward through increasingly hazardous environments, introducing new enemy behaviors and obstacles at a steady pace. The game's progression remains consistently engaging because every level adds something new without overwhelming players with unnecessary mechanics. Movement is one of the game's greatest strengths. Jumping, wall climbing, and firing magical projectiles feel exceptionally responsive, allowing players to rely on skill rather than luck. Success comes from learning enemy attack patterns, mastering timing, and making precise movements through narrow passages and dangerous platforming sections. While the game offers a respectable challenge, it rarely feels unfair, rewarding patience and practice instead of punishing experimentation. This balance makes each completed stage satisfying, especially as the difficulty gradually increases toward the later portions of the adventure. The campaign features both Normal and Hard modes, with the latter offering much more than stronger enemies. Hard mode redesigns stages with fresh layouts, additional hazards, and altered enemy placements, providing experienced players with a genuinely different experience rather than a simple increase in difficulty. Combined with numerous boss encounters and hidden secrets scattered throughout the fortress, the game offers excellent replay value for players who enjoy mastering every aspect of its mechanics. Cooperative multiplayer elevates the experience even further. Supporting up to four players simultaneously, Micro Mages creates a fun blend of teamwork and friendly competition. Players work together to survive dangerous stages while still competing for points and treasure, creating lively and unpredictable sessions. One particularly clever feature allows defeated players to return as ghosts, enabling them to freeze enemies and search treasure chests for revival opportunities. This mechanic ensures that nobody spends long periods watching from the sidelines, keeping every participant involved throughout the adventure. Despite faithfully recreating the limitations of the NES era, the game includes several welcome conveniences that make it more accessible to today's audience. A password system allows players to continue their progress without restarting from the beginning, preserving the classic experience while reducing frustration. Steam players also receive the original NES ROM, an appealing bonus for collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts who appreciate experiencing the title on original hardware or compatible emulators. These additions enhance the package without compromising its authentic identity. Visually, Micro Mages fully embraces the charm of 8-bit graphics. Every environment, enemy, and animation has been carefully designed within the strict technical restrictions of the original console, yet the presentation remains colorful, expressive, and easy to read during hectic gameplay. Character sprites may be small, but they possess plenty of personality, while the variety of environments helps maintain visual interest throughout the journey. The soundtrack complements the visuals perfectly with energetic chiptune compositions that capture the spirit of classic NES adventures while remaining memorable in their own right. Sound effects are crisp and satisfying, providing immediate feedback for every jump, attack, and enemy defeat. What truly distinguishes Micro Mages is how successfully it balances authenticity with intelligent design. Instead of simply copying old games, it improves upon many of their shortcomings through refined level layouts, engaging cooperative mechanics, and quality-of-life features that respect players' time. Whether played alone or with friends, the game consistently delivers exciting platforming challenges that reward practice, coordination, and quick reflexes. It stands as both an impressive technical achievement and an outstanding platformer that deserves recognition beyond its retro appeal. Rating: 9/10
Great little game with loads of charm. Multiplayer is a lot of fun to play with friends and keeps it interesting. Finding the little secret items also adds replay value and that extra challenge to 100% the game. Still haven't beaten yet on hard, but will soon.
I love this game! I appreciate the inclusion of the NES rom!
