funny and cute game

A short yet fun and surprisingly entertaining VN blending the tropes and bizarre characteristics of anime with a grounded, ever-so-slightly gritty and dark (particularly with its humor) setting, subverting the aspects of a typical magical girl story in ways that are pleasantly refreshing, and not just done for the sake of being subversive. At its core, it's a relatively normal story in a normal world with normal people doing normal things; yet in spite of how it could very easily veer off into being comically cynical and even edgy, it still presents a very grounded and earnest story all the same. Each of the central three characters are also entertaining in their own right, with the main character Luna being a nice twist on a standard heroine (though her past doesn't really have much of a bearing on the story at large) and a completely unapologetic otaku the whole way through. I only have two complaints: the combat system is a little annoying at times, especially with having to work through the scripted sequences all over again if you lose and didn't save (though only the final fight warrants this) and how you can't completely predict what the enemy/"enemy" (Luna did at one point end up dying to a sign in the ground) does next, and I simply want more of what MAHOUTEQ! has to offer. If this were expanded upon and made into something like an RPG Maker title with a more fleshed-out combat system, it'd undeniably be in great hands if it also had the same scrappy hand-drawn look and presentation to it.
