Originally released in 2012, Loving Life is a non-fictional auto-biographical visual novel about Zhenghua Yang (Z) and the near-fatal incident which led to the founding of Serenity Forge. This is where it all began.

Wow what a tragic story but thankfully everything is okay afterwards.
Loving Life is an unusually intimate visual novel that treats the medium as a way to preserve memories and explore how a life-threatening experience can completely rearrange a person's priorities. Rather than building its appeal around elaborate mechanics, lengthy progression systems, or difficult choices, it focuses on personal storytelling. The game is based on experiences from the life of Zhenghua Yang, also known as Z, and originated as an early project connected to Serenity Forge. The remastered edition is developed and published by Serenity Forge, giving players an opportunity to experience an important piece of the studio's history in a form better suited to modern computers. At the center of the story is an 18-year-old college student whose ordinary concerns are suddenly overwhelmed by a medical emergency. A severe nosebleed that continues for many hours eventually becomes a frightening confrontation with the possibility of death. What initially seems like a health crisis develops into something much more reflective, as the protagonist begins reconsidering his ambitions, relationships, responsibilities, and understanding of what makes life valuable. The autobiographical foundation gives these moments additional emotional weight because the narrative is attempting to communicate memories and feelings rather than simply constructing fictional drama. The writing is most effective when it examines how quickly everyday worries can lose their importance when circumstances become genuinely serious. Academic pressure, expectations about the future, disagreements, and personal insecurities seem enormous when they dominate daily life, yet the possibility of having almost no future at all provides an entirely different perspective. Loving Life uses this contrast to explore gratitude and the importance of relationships without turning the experience into a conventional heroic journey. Its central transformation is internal, with the protagonist learning to recognize the emotional connections that had previously been easy to overlook. Family and friendship play an especially important role. The possibility of death is frightening on an individual level, but the story also considers what such a loss would mean to everyone surrounding the protagonist. This broadens the narrative beyond simple fear of mortality and helps explain its emphasis on love, empathy, and appreciating other people. Some scenes can feel raw or straightforward compared with highly polished contemporary visual novels, but that simplicity fits a work originating from deeply personal circumstances. It often feels closer to reading an illustrated memoir than participating in a traditional game. The visual presentation supports this personal quality through hand-painted artwork and portraits based around people and memories from the creator's life. More recognizable scenes are contrasted with abstract and surreal sequences representing dreams, thoughts, and experiences surrounding recovery. These transitions allow the artwork to communicate emotional states that ordinary dialogue might struggle to express. The presentation does show its roots as an older independent production, but its handmade character is arguably more important than technical sophistication. The remastered version improves compatibility with modern displays while preserving the original artistic personality. Players should understand that interaction is deliberately light. This is primarily a visual novel centered on reading, observing artwork, and following a predetermined personal account rather than manipulating complicated systems. Anyone looking for puzzles, combat, exploration, extensive branching decisions, or dozens of hours of content will find little of that here. The limited mechanics instead keep attention on the narrative. Modernized features such as text-speed adjustment, audio settings, improved rendering, accessibility-oriented font options, and selected visual enhancements make the experience more comfortable without unnecessarily redesigning the original work. The game's treatment of illness and mortality means that its emotional material can become uncomfortable. Blood is depicted in connection with the medical emergency, and the story naturally spends time considering death and the psychological consequences of believing that one's life could suddenly end. These elements are not included primarily for horror or shock. They provide the foundation for the game's larger examination of perspective and personal change. The result is often melancholy, but the overall message is ultimately much more interested in appreciating life than dwelling on death. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Loving Life works best for players who appreciate short, sincere, and highly personal narrative experiences. Its limited interactivity and relatively modest presentation prevent it from competing with larger visual novels in terms of mechanical complexity, but that is not really its purpose. Its strength comes from turning a frightening real-life event into an accessible reflection on mortality, relationships, gratitude, and changing priorities. It is also interesting as an early expression of the philosophy that would help define Serenity Forge's approach to emotionally meaningful games. As a conventional game, Loving Life is undeniably simple, but as an autobiographical interactive work it carries considerably more significance. Its sincerity, unusual background, handmade artwork, and thoughtful examination of what becomes important when time suddenly feels limited give it an identity of its own. Players willing to approach it as an interactive memoir rather than a mechanically demanding visual novel may find its message surprisingly memorable. Rating: 8/10

Great game on life and living it well
