Would only recommend this when discounted. I liked it, enjoyed the alchemy aspects of this. But it's a bit older. The game is short and there's no bonus game
Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom, developed by World-Loom and published by Artifex Mundi, is a fantasy-themed hidden object adventure that mixes traditional point-and-click gameplay with light alchemy mechanics and narrative-driven exploration. The game casts you as an apprentice alchemist who returns home after years of study, only to find her homeland caught in turmoil and her family shrouded in mystery. As she begins to investigate the disappearance of her parents, she becomes entangled in a larger plot that threatens the entire kingdom. The story’s premise, though familiar to long-time fans of Artifex Mundi titles, is presented with care and charm, supported by a world full of enchantment, secret chambers, and magical artifacts that make each location feel steeped in history and mysticism. From the very beginning, the game establishes a tone of wonder and intrigue. The environments are beautifully illustrated, with hand-painted backgrounds that create a believable fantasy kingdom filled with forests, laboratories, and castle corridors. Artifex Mundi’s signature attention to visual atmosphere is on full display here—each scene feels meticulously composed, with the right blend of light, shadow, and color to evoke a sense of depth and mystery. The art direction captures the alchemical theme particularly well, with numerous ingredients, potions, and sigils scattered across the environments. While the character animations are simple and sometimes stiff, the expressive artwork compensates by immersing the player in a fairytale-like world that feels alive even without elaborate motion. The gameplay structure of Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom is a mixture of hidden object scenes, environmental puzzles, and a unique alchemy system that adds a creative twist to the formula. The hidden object puzzles are straightforward but satisfying, tasking the player with finding specific items within richly detailed scenes. The game occasionally swaps the standard list-based hidden object format for silhouette-style searches or layered puzzles that require combining or interacting with found objects. Interspersed with these are logic puzzles and mechanical challenges that keep the pacing brisk. The standout feature, however, is the alchemy mechanic, which has the player crafting potions through a small rotational puzzle that feels tactile and rewarding. This system gives the gameplay more thematic consistency and prevents it from becoming overly repetitive, even if it remains relatively simple in execution. Lost Grimoires maintains a rhythm that makes it easy to play in one or two sittings. The map system is well-designed, allowing instant travel between areas, and objectives are clearly marked to avoid confusion or unnecessary backtracking. For players seeking a relaxed experience, the hint and skip options are generous and adjustable. The difficulty curve is gentle throughout, making it accessible to newcomers to the genre while still engaging enough for experienced players to appreciate its craftsmanship. However, this accessibility also means that veterans might find it too easy, as most puzzles can be solved in moments without much experimentation. The game’s length is on the shorter side, typically lasting three to four hours, which is standard for Artifex Mundi releases but might feel brief for those looking for a deeper or more challenging adventure. The narrative, while not groundbreaking, carries emotional weight through its themes of redemption, betrayal, and the blurred line between science and magic. The protagonist’s journey to uncover her family’s secrets gives the story personal stakes, and the inclusion of a mysterious masked figure adds tension and intrigue. The writing balances fantasy tropes with moments of introspection, giving the player motivation beyond simple puzzle-solving. The voice acting, though uneven at times, helps flesh out the characters, and the orchestral score adds atmosphere with soft melodies and dramatic flourishes during key scenes. The music effectively enhances the mood without overwhelming it, fitting the mystical tone of the story. As an overall package, Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom succeeds in delivering an enjoyable and visually rich hidden object experience. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre, but it refines its core elements with thoughtful design and a distinctive fantasy setting. Its strengths lie in its cohesive world-building, accessible gameplay, and polished presentation. The alchemy system, though a small addition, helps distinguish it from other titles in Artifex Mundi’s catalog, adding a touch of personality and thematic depth. Its biggest shortcomings are its brevity and lack of challenge, which may leave seasoned players wanting more. Nonetheless, it fulfills its purpose as a relaxing, story-driven adventure filled with charm and atmosphere. For fans of hidden object games who appreciate beautifully illustrated worlds and light fantasy storytelling, Lost Grimoires: Stolen Kingdom remains a worthy and delightful entry in Artifex Mundi’s extensive collection.
