Life is Strange: Episode 1 - Chrysalis sets the foundation for a captivating, story-driven adventure by blending relatable high school drama with an intriguing time-travel hook. You play as Max Caulfield, an introverted photography student who suddenly discovers she can rewind time after witnessing a tragic event in the bathroom of her elite boarding school. What begins as a nostalgic, indie-film aesthetic quickly transforms into a mystery involving missing teenagers, corruption, and an impending supernatural storm threatening the town of Arcadia Bay. The episode's biggest strength lies in its cozy atmosphere and novel gameplay hook. The hand-painted art style, paired with a gorgeous acoustic indie soundtrack, creates an instantly memorable mood. The rewind mechanic is a brilliant spin on traditional choice-based adventure games allowing you to test out different dialogue choices and consequences in real-time, solve light environmental puzzles, and alter short-term outcomes before committing to a decision. Reconnecting with Max's estranged best friend, Chloe Price, gives the narrative a strong, grounded emotional heart right from the start. Where Chrysalis stumbles slightly is in its early pacing and occasional cringey dialogue. The attempt at capturing teenage slang in 2013 doesn't always land naturally, leading to moments of awkward voice delivery. Additionally, as an opening chapter, much of the runtime is spent setting up characters, locations, and future plot threads rather than delivering major narrative payoffs. Despite those minor first-episode hurdles, Episode 1 serves as an incredibly charming, atmospheric debut that hooks you instantly with its tone, mystery, and clever temporal mechanics. Score: 8/10

Life is Strange is one of those games that just stays with you after you finish it. The story feels really personal and weirdly real at times. It’s not trying to be super flashy or action-heavy, it’s more about people, conversations, and small moments that end up feeling a lot bigger than they seem at first. The characters actually feel like real people with messy emotions, not just game characters saying lines. The rewind mechanic is honestly what makes everything click. At first I used it just to mess around, but then I started overthinking every little choice. Even dumb stuff. I’d rewind just to see how something felt “slightly different,” like I actually cared about the outcome more than I expected to. And I will never forget watering a plant and getting hit with: “This action will have consequences.” I just sat there like… it’s a plant. Why do I feel guilty now? That’s kind of the charm of the game though. It makes even small decisions feel important, like you’re constantly shaping things without fully realizing it. The music and atmosphere also do a lot of the heavy lifting in the best way. There are moments where nothing huge is happening, but it still feels meaningful just because of how everything is presented. By the end, it hit me really hard and I got more and more invested with each episode. It slowly built up until I was actually emotional and kind of stressed in a good way, like I really cared about how things would turn out. And when I finally finished it, I was just sitting there completely speechless. Just a really memorable experience overall. One of those games that quietly sticks in your head long after you’re done with it.
I started this game as a chill game that a friend recommended to me, and I ended this game as a person who cried tears every single time I played it. The decisions felt like they truly come from me, and the final decision is what I wish I had picked in real life : Me and my best friend against the entire world. 10/10 game
