Legend of Dungeon is a genuinely charming roguelike that hooked me with its stunning dynamic lighting and wonderfully chaotic item interactions — there's nothing quite like blasting mummies with a tommy gun while wearing a cat on your head, only to burn to death because your summoned skeleton touched a torch. The randomized potions, bizarre hats, and sheer variety of weapons give each run a fresh feel, and the pixel art paired with modern lighting effects creates an atmosphere best enjoyed in a dark room. That said, the combat can feel clunky and unbalanced, and your survival often hinges more on lucky item drops than skill, which can be frustrating when a random enemy on floor 3 one-shots you. If you can make peace with the punishing difficulty and lean into the absurdity, there's a lot of fun to be had here, especially with friends in local co-op. At its price point, it's worth a try for roguelike fans.

This game has been a perpetual install on every computer I've ever owned since I bought it over a decade ago. I've never gotten anywhere close to beating it. It's charming, obnoxious, compelling, and rage-inducing all at the same time. Pretty much everything in LoD is randomly generated, so don't expect an easy time -- you either get lucky or you get squashed. Pickup items are all random, enemies (except for some end-level baddies) are random, dungeon setup and itemization are random. The anxiety of not knowing what's behind the next dungeon door, stairway, tunnel or secret entrance is what makes LoD great. Will you finally bag the lich and be rewarded with a hat that lets you summon a floating cat with laser beam eyes? Or maybe you'll pick up some random potion only to find out that drinking it gives you the rainbow pukes? There's enough weird stuff to encounter and collect that makes the anxiety worth advancing, despite the fact that you'll most likely get torn apart in the next room. Anyway, Legend of Dungeon has hats, cats, throwing stars, grenades, spellbooks, flamethrowers, cursed swords, booze, laser guns, and around a million ways to die. It's fun.

Legend of Dungeon is an enjoyable break from reality. It shows some age, but overall it can be an enjoyable time. While there are games that feel more rewarding this can be a nice palate cleanser before your next dive into a new experience.
