Simple concept but very fun with all the characters and stages to unlock. You could spend a while on this game but it wouldn't get old.
This is about the only fighting game I've ever played. This game doesn't get many players (just look at steamdb) so unfortunately it's necessary to organize games elsewhere and with the same people, and for that reason I rarely play this game. This game also used to be incredibly choppy when I played online multiplayer with anyone with any amount of people. Luckily, someone from the community let me know that the network code for this game has greatly improved, and now online games play buttery smooth. This game is very enjoyable to play against others. Hats being players' greatest strength and greatest weakness makes the games not feel one-sided and characters are mostly the same with just one varying quirk, so it's easy to grasp new characters. So far, the only character I don't like is Snapback because of it's movement, but I don't really know how to explain what I don't like about it. I also tried the modes other than PvP (story/golf) but they really don't feel like part of the game and I think the parts of the game worth playing are the PvP modes, local and online. At this time Online mode is free through Friend Pass so I would only buy the game for local mode or the locked characters which can only be unlocked in the paid game.

Matched by title — a reused name can pair the wrong games. * is a critic aggregate. Prices and positions are each store's United States storefront; Epic charts worldwide. Audience and Score too, except Steam's, which is worldwide.

King of the Hat is a platforming fighter game, similar to Super Smash Bros (although I wouldn't compare it to a $60 AAA game like that). The controls are extremely easy. A jump button, throw button (hattack) and movement. The fact there is a friend pass for this game just shows how generous the devs are. One problem I have is if you get hit once by an expert player you are basically finished, and the bots are way too easy. I would recommend this game if you love platforming games and are trying to get into fighting games.

King of the Hat is a wildly creative multiplayer party fighter that takes a simple idea and transforms it into an intensely competitive and consistently hilarious experience filled with chaos, strategy, and nonstop tension. Developed by Hyroglyphik Games and published by Hat Games, the game revolves around a bizarre but brilliant concept where every character’s soul is stored inside their hat. Instead of traditional health bars or long combo systems, players win by destroying opponents’ hats while protecting their own. This unusual mechanic immediately gives the game a distinct identity and creates fast-paced battles where every movement and decision feels dangerous. The core gameplay is remarkably easy to understand, which is one of the reasons the game works so well in both casual and competitive settings. Players jump into compact arenas where survival depends entirely on keeping their hats safe while finding opportunities to destroy the hats of others. Since hats can be thrown, hidden, baited, or used aggressively, every match quickly turns into a frantic battle of positioning, prediction, and mind games. The simplicity of the concept allows anyone to start playing almost immediately, but the deeper strategies that emerge over time give the game surprising long-term depth. One of the game’s biggest strengths is its pacing. Matches are incredibly fast and chaotic, with players constantly dashing around arenas, attacking, dodging, and scrambling to protect their vulnerable hats. Momentum shifts happen almost instantly, and even dominant players can be eliminated in seconds after a single mistake. This constant tension keeps every round exciting because nobody ever feels completely safe, regardless of skill level or score. The hat mechanic itself is genuinely brilliant because it completely changes how players think about combat. Throwing your hat aggressively may create opportunities to eliminate opponents, but it also exposes your own weakness if mistimed. Keeping the hat too close may improve defense, but limits offensive pressure. Every decision involves balancing risk and reward, creating a surprisingly strategic layer beneath the game’s chaotic appearance. Players naturally develop unique playstyles depending on how aggressively or defensively they approach combat. The controls feel extremely responsive, which is essential for a game built around split-second reactions and rapid movement. Jumping, attacking, and maneuvering around hazards all feel smooth and intuitive, allowing the gameplay to remain skill-based rather than random. Even though eliminations happen quickly, deaths rarely feel unfair because the mechanics are easy to read and consistent throughout every match. Arena design contributes heavily to the overall experience as well. The stages are compact but cleverly constructed, often filled with hazards, moving platforms, environmental traps, and layouts that constantly force players into dangerous situations. Some arenas encourage vertical movement and aerial battles, while others create cramped spaces where chaos erupts almost immediately. The stage variety helps maintain replayability because each environment subtly changes how players approach positioning and survival. Character variety also adds extra personality to the game. Different fighters possess distinct abilities and traits that slightly alter combat flow and strategic options. Although the mechanics remain accessible overall, the character differences provide enough variety to encourage experimentation and keep matches feeling fresh over long sessions. Unlockable cosmetics and customization options further expand the game’s charm and replay value. Visually, King of the Hat embraces a colorful cartoon-inspired art style that perfectly matches its absurd premise and energetic gameplay. Characters are expressive and full of personality, while exaggerated animations make every elimination feel dramatic and funny. Bright colors and strong visual clarity ensure that even chaotic multiplayer matches remain readable, which is especially important during four-player battles filled with constant movement and attacks. The soundtrack and sound design also deserve praise. Music remains energetic and upbeat throughout matches, helping reinforce the game’s frantic pacing and party-game atmosphere. Sound effects tied to attacks, eliminations, and hat interactions provide satisfying feedback that makes every successful move feel impactful. The overall audio presentation adds significantly to the excitement and helps maintain the game’s playful tone. Replay value is another major strength. Because matches are short and highly unpredictable, the game naturally encourages repeated play sessions. The social nature of the gameplay also creates endless opportunities for memorable moments, rivalries, and chaotic interactions between players. No two matches ever feel exactly the same because player behavior and arena dynamics constantly create new situations. The multiplayer focus is clearly where the game performs best. Local multiplayer sessions become incredibly entertaining because the mechanics naturally encourage shouting, laughter, betrayals, and tense stand-offs between players. The game is easy enough for newcomers to enjoy instantly, while experienced players can still showcase impressive mastery through movement, positioning, and prediction. This balance makes it one of the stronger modern party fighters for groups seeking quick and highly replayable multiplayer fun. However, the game is not without flaws. One noticeable limitation is the relatively narrow gameplay structure. While the core mechanic remains extremely fun, much of the experience revolves around repeating the same basic objective across different stages and modes. Players looking for extensive progression systems or large amounts of single-player content may eventually feel the gameplay loop becomes repetitive after long sessions. The single-player experience is also far less engaging than multiplayer. While AI opponents and solo modes exist, the game clearly reaches its full potential when played against real people. Without the unpredictability and social interaction provided by human players, much of the excitement naturally disappears. Balancing can occasionally feel chaotic as well. Since eliminations happen very quickly and matches are intentionally frantic, there are moments where players may lose almost instantly without much opportunity to recover. While this unpredictability contributes to the game’s charm, it can occasionally frustrate players seeking a more controlled competitive experience. Despite these shortcomings, King of the Hat succeeds remarkably well at delivering a unique and highly entertaining multiplayer experience built around one brilliantly executed mechanic. Its combination of accessible controls, strategic combat, colorful presentation, and nonstop tension creates a game that feels instantly enjoyable while still rewarding players who invest time mastering its systems. For fans of local multiplayer games, party fighters, and fast-paced competitive experiences filled with chaos and social interaction, King of the Hat delivers an addictive and memorable experience packed with humor, strategy, and replay value. Its creative central concept and energetic gameplay make it one of the most inventive indie multiplayer titles currently available. Rating: 9/10
