About
A free-roaming squad based RPG focusing on open-ended sandbox gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave, or just food for the cannibals.

Research new equipment and craft new gear. Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors. Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world in the largest single-player RPG world since Daggerfall, stretching over 870 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
Custom design as many characters as you want and build up a whole squad to fight for you. Characters will grow and become stronger with experience, not just in their stats but their appearance too.
Build a base where you can research new technologies, upgrade your defences and craft new gear.

Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.

You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the centre of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.

Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.

Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a businessman, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city. Devote yourself to freeing slaves, or maybe end up a slave yourself.

Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.

Get captured by cannibals and eaten alive, or sold off by slavers and forced to work in the mines. These are not scripted events, just a regular part of this chaotic world that ruins your life by chance. Anything can happen, yet anything can be overcome if you have the strength.

Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle. The game won't hold your hand or help you when you're down.

Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Severe injuries will result in amputees needing robotic limb replacements. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. A character’s stats are affected by equipment, encumbrance, blood loss, injuries and starvation.

Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you and run production in your base.

Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh environment.

Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in grey suits who have never played a game before in their lives.

Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off clichés. No magic.

Every market we collect.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,515 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Become no one. Wander out of town. Get ass beat by slavers. Slavers get attacked by bonedogs. Everyone forgets about me. I wander the map until the slave tag wears off. Mine copper. Accidentally kite Dust Bandits back to town. Wear Gear. Mine copper until i can afford 2 more people. We all mine. Get our asses beat a lot. Found a small town. Outgrow it. Found a city. Industrialize armor and weapon production. Industrialize food. Outfit army. Fight vulture brontos. declare war. Somehow get so busy, you only use hemp in an industrial capacity. 10/10 would forget to smoke again.
:]
This game totally kicks ass. Im loving the freedom to do whatever. 91 hours in and im just about to start touching on the mods.
Gosh, I have such mixed feelings, but I do really love it. I've had Kenshi in my library since 2018 and have tried to connect with it multiple times. On paper, I should have loved it right away, but I kept bouncing off of it until about 2 weeks ago. Not sure what made me dive back in but I did and it finally clicked, with some caveats. In the games defense, I think a big part of that is because it took me too long. Kenshi is a completely unique squad-based RPG/RTS hybrid. If there is another game like this, please tell me, I can't find one. Which is incredibly surprising, considering how popular and well received this game has been over the years. If you can get into a good sanbox, this is one of the best, still almost a decade later. Especially with mods (which is a con imo, not a pro, but I'll get into that later). Don't like a faction? You can wipe them out entirely (or die trying). Wanna be a peaceful trader? Sure. How about a robot martial arts master? Sure, and actually, you're not the only one. Make your own town, or multiple towns? Well, let's just say, you can certainly try. Or maybe you want to dominate the entire world and enslave everyone? Well, actually you can't do that in the base game, even though the vanilla factions are mostly trying to do just that, but you can with mods. The combat is one of the coolest parts about this game. In most games that come anything close to being like this, combat is all numbers. Sure you might get to see your guys in full 3D hacking and slashing at eachother, but there's no rhythm to it. In Kenshi, every fight is like watching an action movie. When a character hits someone with a sword, you see and feel the impact. A successful block is shown visually similar to how you would see it in Mount & Blade for example, not just a static block animation but a block in the correct direction, even when being attacked from behind. Characters also dodge, get staggered, and with high skills can do crazy kick flips and other kung fu movie nonsense. It's awesome. It feels like a melee combat simulator more than a videogame in this way. Not only is the gameplay an original, but so is the set and setting. If you're a fan of the totally alien fantasy world of Morrowind, and/or the desolate post-apocalyptic hellscapes of Wasteland or Fallout, I think you will find a lot to love about Kenshi. On top of that, the combinations of Japanese culture, swordpunk, and futuristic tech is just such a unique idea. I'm a little mixed on the factions though, there are only really 2, arguably 3 or 4, that still exist, control a significant part of the world, and have goals & power to achieve them. Plenty of minor factions but they sit in holes doing nothing mostly, unless you carry their banner for them. And the factions that do have power and land are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and evil, no roleplay at or above Neutral morality will see you allying with them imo. Even if you do, frankly, without mods, the vanilla impact you can have on the world by siding with these factions leaves a lot to be desired. Mostly, interfering just makes everything worse than it already is. This is about where my praise ends. The game is about a decade old and it feels older than that. It is buggy as hell and you WILL need to consistently use devtools mid-late game just to continue making normal progress to fix bugs with pathfidning, characters disappearing, etc. The game starts out oppressively challenging and stays that way until you finally reach a tipping point at which time everything becomes pretty much trivial. And by the time you get there, you've learned enough about the game to know how easy it is to cheese your way to that point in subsequent playthroughs. The challenge of this game isn't so much skill or mastery of the mechanics but rather knowledge of how they work, which dampers replayability a bit imo. Which is a shame, because there are many different directions you could take a Kenshi playthrough, more than enough to warrant at least one New Game. On powerful modern hardware, performance is bad in late game. The way the world loads and unloads zones is basically broken and can't be fixed due to engine limitations. Basically, it's not well optimized, and mods can't fix that. You will experience lag in the late game. To make matters worse, the late game is mostly about base and squad management. The job system for automating characters is broken and incredibly buggy, which means you will need to do a lot of tedious micromanagement to keep things at your base running smoothly. Enemies from the massive late game raids will routinely bug through your gates and walls, so you end up playing defense more around game breaking bugs than the raid itself. This is really my experience with late game Kenshi in general. I feel like I am at this point fighting the game engine itself to reach a state of completion in my save file more than I am the game. Mods fix some of the issues with both performance and gameplay issues, and they also add to the complexity and make other things worse. It's a beautiful, ugly, unique mess. Maybe a lot of my critique is unfair for a decade old game. I'm just reviewing it for what it is right now. I'm sure Kenshi 2 will fix a lot of these issues. Definitely very excited for that game now.
