this game. I mean, I don't think that the execution is bad. the execution of this is way too good. which is why you probably shouldn't be wasting your time on this. there's some really rancid thoughts in this, and while there's, like, I guess, MARGINAL ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ character growth, it feels like just reading the 4chan blog the main character is frequenting. it delivers what is said on the tin. it is indeed incel syndrome. please do not continue past this. I suffered together with a friend for FIVE CONSECUTIVE HOURS. please do not even attempt. it is so not worth your time, just read genuine scientific articles on incels, or maybe even just go online for once. you'll see enough people like this in real life. you do not need to play an entire ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ manifesto on them. thank you for your time. PLEASE BE SMARTER THAN ME AND DO NOT INDULGE YOUR CURIOSITY. YOU WILL DIE LIKE THE CAT. AND THERE IS NO SATISFACTION TO BE FOUND TO BRING YOU BACK.
Incel Syndrome is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through somewhat mediocre text, like reading a bad book, but in a less digestible format. This e-book was slapped together with the godawfully bad RenPy Visual Novel/E-Book construction kit, so no professional game development took place, it's just a product of filling out templates in the construction kit. Usually I'll go on about how E-books are just dumped on Steam because the authors are so bad at writing that real book publishers would take out a restraining order if they ever read their garbage penmanship, and that's by and large the truth, but here, this E-book/non-game is an art exhibition that's been dumped on Steam, presumably because the local art galleries (instead of the book publishers) took out a restraining order on the "artists" who had no other choice but to pay Valve $100 to dump this on Steam. The game approaches the concept of "incelism" from a quasi-satirical point of view, and this is where I have to say the writing is better than most of the trash E-books that get dumped on Steam. That doesn't make this suddenly a game, or anything that was developed with gamers in mind... and I feel like I need to remind everyone, this is Steam, which is for video games. Not for art or for E-books, or for E-book artworks. So whatever the quality of this might be, it's still an E-book. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. You can get better quality books and comics for free online or from public libraries, or from bookstores for a fraction of the price of this "game". Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games. This is free on Steam, but it's free because it's not really a game, it's an art exhibition/E-book. There's plenty of great local galleries and public libraries in every city that would offer a far better experience than this. And because it's not a game, it's impossible to recommend to gamers, who are presumably on Steam, looking for video games to play, not books to read.
7/10 A VN about school bullying and troubled young adult males who feel unwanted by women. Good: - the writing is pretty good. It gives an in-detail report of the thought process of a troubled guy in his early 20s in the modern US - the music is rather pleasant, there are some classic pieces that fit the mood - free So-so: - the graphics are pretty limited. There are maybe 15-20 backgrounds, some of them pretty abstract, and a handful of characters. They stay on the screen for most of the time and make the story feel boring simply because the picture is too static - the beginning of the story is underwhelming and made me initially drop this VN and write a bad review. However, if you're patient, it picks up steam and comes to the point by chapter 2 or even 3. If I were in the author's shoes, I'd rewrite the first chapter and make it more dynamic, and come to the point faster. I'm glad I came back to this VN to give it another try Bad: - the story goes fully from the point of view of the main character, and it's often hard to say if his statements are what the author supports or objects, or if this uncertainty is intentional. Being in the mind of a person who goes crazy isn't a pleasant experience, simply because the ramble just goes on an on, and you can't disagree or stop. It's just keeps building one faulty conclusion upon another. I know that's intended but one just doesn't enjoy such experience I'm not sure what the authors' intent was here - they write in the store description that it's to show that "incel" subculture is "more complicated". But to me, especially after reading this VN to the end, the conclusions were probably something that the authors didn't have in mind. I'll just write them out: 1. fatherlessness. The protagonist (and his friend Jake) technically have fathers but never talk to them. So, no adult male model to follow. Also, both boys struggle from bullying at school, and their parents either don't know or don't care. This VN essentially shows what comes out of dysfunctional families 2. the whole crappy government-funded system of schools where, for the sake of reducing costs, we put 30+ random kids in a class like into a prison cell. There are always 2-3 boys from troubled families and pro-criminal behavior in the class who bully and torture others. This VN shows what happens with their victims in young adulthood. It's not the kids themselves who should try to solve this issue by "fighting back" against some muscular imbecile. The school should just get rid of bullies. Those idiots don't need education anyway, they'll end up in prison or something similar so why waste government funding on them and make other kids miserable 3. the consumerism culture. This prevalent idea of "mating market". And how even guys who claim themselves to be "above the system" still judge girls solely by their looks - because advertisement and porn teach them to. It never occurs to them that, if they only want physical beauty in women (and not, say, intelligence), then it's only fair if women similarly only want athletic guys (and not, say, smart). This VN gives a view of some very real problems of modern Western societies, for the point of view of a victim.
