About

In The Black ® is an intense space combat simulator featuring singleplayer and multiplayer game modes (PvE and PvP). It is laser focused on the combat pilot experience in a future dominated by warring megacorporations. Rank up by completing contract missions and competing in BloodSport matches. Customize and upgrade your ships as you earn access to ever more advanced and lethal 23rd century space fighters.

Set in our solar system 200 years in the future, players are mercenaries hired by ruthless megacorporations to fight their shadow wars for control of the system’s resources. For now the action is focused primarily in Saturn’s system, particularly around Titan, Enceladus, and the rings. There is a rich mix of combat scenarios such as Debris Sweep, The Belt, Blindspot (Pallene), Asteroid Mining Facility, Space Recon, Ship Strike, and Station Defense.
There are five different flyable ship classes to suit a variety of combat styles, each with variants: the Shrike- and Kolibri-class light fighters, the Reus-class medium fighter, the Pegasus-class combat transport, and the Hyperion-class heavy fighter. Each ship has its unique characteristics, and all are multi-role capable depending on the loadout. The game’s ShipFrame Editor allows players to modify and upgrade each ship’s weapons configuration with the Hardpoint Editor and the Ship Paint Customizer offers a rich palette of options to give each ship a unique appearance.
Whether you prefer a more casual control system or a full virtual pilot setup with sticks, throttles, and pedals, In The Black’s robust input system supports everything from mouse and keyboard, gamepads, Steam Deck, HOTAS and HOSAS, as well as head and eye tracking and ultrawide monitor support.
The Impeller Studios team is led by industry veterans Jack Mamais (MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, Far Cry, and Crysis) and David Wessman (the X-Wing / TIE Fighter series, Blood Wake, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and Saints Row). We are hardcore gamers ourselves and we believe the best games are skill-based and intrinsically rewarding. And we really like the idea of flying nuclear-powered rockets through the rings of Saturn to engage in explosive high tech mayhem using lasers, missiles, and railguns!
And thanks technical consultant and chief spacecraft designer Zach El-Hajj, PhD, In The Black ® elevates the visceral excitement of a cockpit shooter with a serious respect for science making it one of the few games to earn the Atomic Rockets Seal of Approval.

We invite you to join our growing community on Steam and Discord to share your feedback and help steer the future evolution of In The Black ®.
Please note: this game currently requires an Internet connection and it is an online-first experience. The core of the game is built around a shared back-end that relies on a live database. Even in solo or co-op scenarios, players are interacting with the same systems running the multiplayer experience. We completely understand the appeal of a fully offline mode, especially for a sim-style game like this, and it's something we hope to revisit in the future. Thank you for your understanding, mercs.

My career as a merc is only just beginning, but if you like the sound of what In The Black is looking to achieve, it's well worth checking out. The flight model and ballistics are designed with realism in mind, which makes combat cold, brutal, challenging, and highly satisfying when a plan is executed successfully. For fellow fans of The Expanse, there are not many games that come as close to simulating what it might feel like to engage in the space battles of that show (both long-range and CQC). I have a soft spot for sci-fi and various space sims, and would LOVE to see ITB's philosophy and mechanics incorporated into a more fully-fledged simulation or MMO adjacent game. For now, though, I'm happy hopping into a quick contract or multiplayer match here and there to satiate my thirst for nuclear-powered space combat, in a ruthless future we will (thankfully?) never experience in our lifetimes.
Best flight model of any space sim I’ve played, and incredibly satisfying combat. I see some reviews complaining about lack of content at launch, but honestly there’s enough to enjoy here already to more than justify the price. Making a game like this in the first place takes passion, so I expect the devs will keep building on the solid foundations already here. This could become the new standard in space combat sims, happy to support the devs in their vision on this one.

Excellent Newtonian physics space combat sim - I know many people are put off by that, but I feel like thee realism is AMAZING!
Tasty AF.
strong atmosphere, strong presentation, a fun experience
meh
Incredible how they managed to fit 6 Degrees of freedom and realistic space movement in such a manageable set of controls. Hate space sims with 300 key bindings! This can fit all the keybinds on my Ps4 controller. Amazing game. Satisfying Railgun.
So When I first got this game. It pissed me off quite alot due to what i generaly beleave where bad idea they added. Like repair costs for your vehicals and the grind taking so long after just 10 or so ranks. However. I think I was being abit to harsh on the game. There are still things that really annoy me like glitches and bugs some of which are game breaking in places but the dev team have blown me away. Interacting with the community to the point that they have even replyed to me in youtube comments and steam discussions. At the moment the game has a very war thunder feel and that worries me abit because I didnt like the direction war thunder went and it took them years to turn that round. Im very worried the same thing will happen to this game but with a dev team working this closly with the commuity I beleave that future updates will only game the game better. Big shout out to the devs. Amazing work. Keep it up
The graphics and visuals are great. I'm still playing and haven't finished it yet but loving it so far. I would recommend the devs to not set the FPS to max by default! My PC fans started working and making some noises. But it got fixed when I changed the FPS to 60.
fun! simple interface and straightforward game. controls seem complex at first but after playing for a couple of hours you get the hang of it. love the ship customization and want to unlock all of them; they have sick designs! a lot of potential in this and i'm excited to see where this goes.
