About

In The Black ® is an intense space combat simulator featuring singleplayer and multiplayer game modes (PvE and PvP). It is laser focused on the combat pilot experience in a future dominated by warring megacorporations. Rank up by completing contract missions and competing in BloodSport matches. Customize and upgrade your ships as you earn access to ever more advanced and lethal 23rd century space fighters.

Set in our solar system 200 years in the future, players are mercenaries hired by ruthless megacorporations to fight their shadow wars for control of the system’s resources. For now the action is focused primarily in Saturn’s system, particularly around Titan, Enceladus, and the rings. There is a rich mix of combat scenarios such as Debris Sweep, The Belt, Blindspot (Pallene), Asteroid Mining Facility, Space Recon, Ship Strike, and Station Defense.
There are five different flyable ship classes to suit a variety of combat styles, each with variants: the Shrike- and Kolibri-class light fighters, the Reus-class medium fighter, the Pegasus-class combat transport, and the Hyperion-class heavy fighter. Each ship has its unique characteristics, and all are multi-role capable depending on the loadout. The game’s ShipFrame Editor allows players to modify and upgrade each ship’s weapons configuration with the Hardpoint Editor and the Ship Paint Customizer offers a rich palette of options to give each ship a unique appearance.
Whether you prefer a more casual control system or a full virtual pilot setup with sticks, throttles, and pedals, In The Black’s robust input system supports everything from mouse and keyboard, gamepads, Steam Deck, HOTAS and HOSAS, as well as head and eye tracking and ultrawide monitor support.
The Impeller Studios team is led by industry veterans Jack Mamais (MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, Far Cry, and Crysis) and David Wessman (the X-Wing / TIE Fighter series, Blood Wake, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and Saints Row). We are hardcore gamers ourselves and we believe the best games are skill-based and intrinsically rewarding. And we really like the idea of flying nuclear-powered rockets through the rings of Saturn to engage in explosive high tech mayhem using lasers, missiles, and railguns!
And thanks technical consultant and chief spacecraft designer Zach El-Hajj, PhD, In The Black ® elevates the visceral excitement of a cockpit shooter with a serious respect for science making it one of the few games to earn the Atomic Rockets Seal of Approval.

We invite you to join our growing community on Steam and Discord to share your feedback and help steer the future evolution of In The Black ®.
Please note: this game currently requires an Internet connection and it is an online-first experience. The core of the game is built around a shared back-end that relies on a live database. Even in solo or co-op scenarios, players are interacting with the same systems running the multiplayer experience. We completely understand the appeal of a fully offline mode, especially for a sim-style game like this, and it's something we hope to revisit in the future. Thank you for your understanding, mercs.

Definitely a game to watch pop it on your wishlist I like the art direction, and customisation I like the audio etc the flight is very newtonian which I like, although I think the default control scheme is counter intuitive (but I play star citizen, which messes with my muscle memory) I would say its not in a place that its a 'game' per se yet, its very early access but there's enough there to know theres alot of potential here
Good potential, satisfying combat and progression, nice looking ships. Still EA but can become a great game

Have you ever had issac newton grab you by the balls, then you grab his and turns out it transmutes into the joystick of the Shrike fighter the game bestows you after the tutorial, next thing you know you are In The Black™ with nothing but your ship, your sharpness, your aim and your grip on Sir Newton's Jewels. Reccomended for fellow peoples with high patience of for those weebs who watched the Expanse™. A certain understanding of physics and math required (or malleable instinct ydy).
Its early, but if you're a true space sim sicko you know these things are always a bit janky to begin with. If you've got sticks and want to try something a bit different go for it imo.
Must play for all space sim fans. Slick and fun. Get out there in the black!
Its not terrible for early access but it has a lot of potential. The biggest issue with it right now is the hella grindy progression but again, early access.
Great space combat sim with a ton of potential. Elite, this is what space combat should look like: Hull, armor, kinetic weapons, missiles, speed, range.
Only get if you want to throw down the vbux for at the moment a few short unconnected missions over and over again or PVP multiplayer. It does look and feel great to play with a joystick and rudder pedals. Hopefully they keep rolling out content because at the moment it simulates the emptiness of space too well.
I'm going to give the mildest recommendation for this game, because the gameplay is great! It hits all the sweet spots for a certain space sim audience that wanted a methodical, semi-realistic space shooter that does not simply involve space jousting. Bugs abound (hopefully not for long), content is sparse, features are bare, but the foundations are solid and can definitely be built upon to make an amazing game. It's barely more expensive than a movie ticket here so definitely worth the price. HOWEVER you should be very aware about what exactly you are getting into: It's a multiplayer-first, always-online, early-access, indie, niche game. A hard pitch to sell. Unfortunately, it reminds me a lot about Infinity Battlespace, which had the exact same pitch and is struggling to maintain its player population. Furthermore, it is a always-online game with no (public?) plan for its end of life, which is not exactly reassuring for such a small game. At the same time, it seems to be mostly a side project that does not require massive development funds, and digging in the project's history revealed that it used to have a Peer-to-Peer structure so maybe there is a private backup plan but I'm just speculating there. Time will tell if In The Black will manage to find and retain its audience, but in the meantime I'm having a blast!
Great shooter! Lots of good elements, and a very solid sim feel! I hope they implement multicrewed ships!
