Homicipher

I did not like Homicipher at all. All the reviews I see about this game praise specifically Mr Crawling and barely anything about the gameplay or story or anything than 'hot monster man' which frustrates me severely. Having a game be about language deciphering is amazing, I love a fun language-based puzzle game but the translation team for the english localization did this game dirty. Some of the words have multiple meanings like would & should using the same word, as well as the monsters speaking in broken english defeats the very purpose of the game. When you do have a full correct dictionary the monsters still talk like children with very rudimentary sentences, which makes the decoding/point of the game way more difficult by this decision. I also found the story to be strange and roundabout and the art honestly kind of bad to look at it, and not in a good visceral way. I only review games once I beat them/get an ending and once I got a true ending that wasn't a death I was so thankfully to finally get this game over with. It is such a slog to play and I wish I could enjoy it like so many others do but it seems like the little enjoyment people seem to talk about are the monster men which are just kind of nothing to write home about. Maybe I'll give it another chance and try to see all the endings but by god is this game boring and tedious. I can see the appeal and I don't fault others for enjoying it if they like what's presented to them but its a bad language puzzle game flat out. I have very little time in this game because it felt grating to play but I see others with much more time clocked in, maybe hopefully it gets better and more palatable because I want to like this game but unfortunately not for me.

This game was so interesting. It needs a few replays to fill out the dictionary, but there are plenty of context clues to complete new words, and every playthrough gets more and more fun as you understand more of the conversations - from "I wonder what they're talking about..." to "That guy wanted to eat me this whole time!?" The characters are a delight, actually. They're really funny. It's easy to skip to the scenes you haven't completed using the chapter select as well, so completing the game is convenient, even though it's a VN. It's a short game, but it was worth the money.
