This makes me want to study
Ever heard of a platformer game where platforming is the worst part of the game? It is Silksong. A huge step-back from the previous installment, made to be unfair and frustrating instead of fun and challenging.
Well, I loved Hollow Knight and that is why I really anticipated this game. And after a long wait, I feel really disappointed. I mean, it is pretty much the same game. It controls well, has a good world building, nice combat action, flawless art and sound direction. But the game is a downgrade from Hollow Knight. It is clear that Team Cherry wanted to replicate the challenge in Hollow Knight, but in their desire to be more challenging, they just made a game that wastes your time with long runbacks, few checkpoints, and annoying enemies. It is not that hard if you are willing to repeat over and over again the same section or boss, but the fact that you have to go through long stretches just to retry some challenging section is tiresome. All in all, Silksong is not organically hard, it is hard in a way that the developers just try to annoy the player as much as they could. Team Cherry is an awesome designer in terms of boss battles, but they really are not very good in designing levels. Bilewater is the worst level I have ever played in any video game. Whoever designed that has very little idea of fun or even challenge. I never felt satisfied beating a section, I felt relieved the game was a little closer to finish. And that is the main comparison point for me: In Hollow Knight, I wanted to play more as I advanced in the game; in Silksong, the game got worse every stage.

red buge :)
I can't believe this game won game of the year... Hollow Knight was good, and posed a nice exploration, lore, and challenging bosses. This? Just seems like a rehash of everything in Hollow Knight, but with the difficulty and punishing cranked to 11.
As much as I loved HK, Silksong just feels tedious. I enjoy a hard game from time to time. The problem is, a hard game has to properly balance it's difficulty with enjoyment, and Silksong just doesn't do that very well. In Hollow Knight I can remember frustrating boss fights maybe happening twice or thrice. Other than that, hard bosses felt challenging. Here it's more like every 1-2 hours you meet a boss that is just straight up not fun. Runbacks are more punishing, waaaaaay worse checkpoints overall, you have to farm too much to buy unlocks. Movement is better, combat is better from the perspective of your own capabilities and the game is more colorful but that's pretty much the entire list of things Silksong does better for me. It started off really good and the more I progressed into the game, the more Irealized it just felt like doing a chore, and not going on an adventure like the first game felt.
Wasting time doesn’t make a game hard. Do you like doing chores? Then this is the game for you. I know I haven’t played much, but this game just isn’t very fun. It feels like it’s been artificially lengthened. Instead of rewarding you for exploration, this game punishes you for not knowing what’s ahead. And the game isn’t difficult; it’s just tedious. There’s grinding — in a 2D platformer. Traversing the map is tedious because it’s bloated with spikes and “gotcha” traps, and regular flying enemies require way too many hits. The bosses are fun. Everything else is kind of meh. But good luck grinding your “ammo” and running back to the boss for two minutes after every attempt.
Absolute Peak, Absolute Cinema - 9/10.
I tried so hard to like this game, it carries over the beautiful aesthetic from Hollowknight in the visuals and music. Unfortunately that's where my praise ends; it is simply not fun for me to play. Every enemy has too much health and hits too hard, I look at passages to new zones and instead of being curious about what is there, I feel dread and resignation at the thought of having to slog through a field of these enemies with Hornet and her janky side lunging movement. Too often this is confirmed by areas like Sinner's Rest; which is one of the most oppressive zones I have ever played in due to the hard hitting enemies, maggots that steal your silk, traversal that hurts you when you mess up and the rest bench that doesn't work. Maybe it's a skill issue, but I finished the first game despite finding it challenging, Silksong doesn't give me any reasons to keep trying.
