I enjoyed exploring and overcoming Hollow Knight... this very clearly is not Hollow Knight. An exercise in frustration that I don't feel encouraged to progress in. So far akin to a well painted brick wall. We'll see if that changes as I continue to smash my head into it.
As much as I loved HK, Silksong just feels tedious. I enjoy a hard game from time to time. The problem is, a hard game has to properly balance it's difficulty with enjoyment, and Silksong just doesn't do that very well. In Hollow Knight I can remember frustrating boss fights maybe happening twice or thrice. Other than that, hard bosses felt challenging. Here it's more like every 1-2 hours you meet a boss that is just straight up not fun. Runbacks are more punishing, waaaaaay worse checkpoints overall, you have to farm too much to buy unlocks. Movement is better, combat is better from the perspective of your own capabilities and the game is more colorful but that's pretty much the entire list of things Silksong does better for me. It started off really good and the more I progressed into the game, the more Irealized it just felt like doing a chore, and not going on an adventure like the first game felt.

Well, I loved Hollow Knight and that is why I really anticipated this game. And after a long wait, I feel really disappointed. I mean, it is pretty much the same game. It controls well, has a good world building, nice combat action, flawless art and sound direction. But the game is a downgrade from Hollow Knight. It is clear that Team Cherry wanted to replicate the challenge in Hollow Knight, but in their desire to be more challenging, they just made a game that wastes your time with long runbacks, few checkpoints, and annoying enemies. It is not that hard if you are willing to repeat over and over again the same section or boss, but the fact that you have to go through long stretches just to retry some challenging section is tiresome. All in all, Silksong is not organically hard, it is hard in a way that the developers just try to annoy the player as much as they could. Team Cherry is an awesome designer in terms of boss battles, but they really are not very good in designing levels. Bilewater is the worst level I have ever played in any video game. Whoever designed that has very little idea of fun or even challenge. I never felt satisfied beating a section, I felt relieved the game was a little closer to finish. And that is the main comparison point for me: In Hollow Knight, I wanted to play more as I advanced in the game; in Silksong, the game got worse every stage.
Wasting time doesn’t make a game hard. Do you like doing chores? Then this is the game for you. I know I haven’t played much, but this game just isn’t very fun. It feels like it’s been artificially lengthened. Instead of rewarding you for exploration, this game punishes you for not knowing what’s ahead. And the game isn’t difficult; it’s just tedious. There’s grinding — in a 2D platformer. Traversing the map is tedious because it’s bloated with spikes and “gotcha” traps, and regular flying enemies require way too many hits. The bosses are fun. Everything else is kind of meh. But good luck grinding your “ammo” and running back to the boss for two minutes after every attempt.
Absolute Peak, Absolute Cinema - 9/10.
Not sure why I bounced off of it unfortunately, loved HK1 on the switch and played this game at launch but it just didn't hook me the same way. Eventually fell off and just not interested in going back, it might have been the change in map design (HK2 felt like it had more wide open maps based on my memory of HK1) or maybe the increased focus on tough fights instead of exploration and mystique
Quite over rated. The mid to late part of the game is quite bad; you don't know where to go. You waste a lot of time dying, back tracking, never finding a spawn point. Challenging is fun, but this is just frustrating. I'm quite surprised how beloved this series is.
