It's like that old fashioned Heroes of Might and Magic that you loved, except without any of the fun. It's like a zombie HOMM, shambling along in a imitation of life but the soul is missing. I'm not sure why exactly, but I just don't enjoy it at all. It did make me pine for the real thing, though, so I'm playing HOMM3 again now.
This is a disgustingly bad Heroes game. The devs are lazy bums who clearly have moved to another project after making enough money. Bugs never get fixed, no content update, some abilities don’t even have sound or visual effects. Faction skills aren’t properly balanced. Dialogue writing is worse than in new Spongebob episodes. The soundtrack is made by the most talentless artist you could possibly find. The graphics are a blurry mess to the point where you can damage your eyesight. The new game mechanics they’ve introduced are very stupid and game breaking like upgrading artifacts for ridiculous stats inflation, brain-dead global spells that allow players to jump around maps like Nightcrawler, retarded faction laws that were made only to waste people’s time.
Decent framework but for some reason the devs are hyperfixated on PvP in a game that hardly anyone plays for PvP. They're going to ruin the game for 90% of the playerbase trying to chase a handful of people that will play for a week then run off to something that better fits a competitive environment. If the devs ever stop trying to turn this newest part of the series into something its not going to ever succeed at being then it might actually end up being good. I like what they did with the Laws, I like the variety in heroes, and I did enjoy playing for a bit, but everything looking forward is not so bright.
Game is great but yes I agree with lots of the other reviewers. I bought the game in hope they would focus on PVE content. I do not care about PVP content at all. I want Story and maybe some custom maps. I thought by now we would have way more PVE content but yeah all these updates so far has been heavy focus on PVP... Game is design and factions are great ,but they need to switch focus to PVE and campaign not PVP and multiplayer.
I rarely post reviews on Early Access titles, but the recent patch notes made it a request, so this is mostly feedback for Unfrozen; I'm assuming/hoping they're going to scrape the reviews for keywords to prioritize content. HoMM:OE has all the makings of a terrific entry into the HoMM franchise. I haven't been interested in a new HoMM title since HoMM 3. So why the negative review? Well, the only way I ever engaged in HoMM was hotseat PvE coop, and in that regard, Olden Era is currently an absolute failure. The AI is an absolute joke, and several months in, we're still waiting for a whiff of PvE content. In the meantime, Unfrozen seems to be obsessed with focusing on PvP. Devs, if you're listening, you have an incredible framework here, but I suspect that the majority of your playerbase is interested in playing some coop free-for-alls with friends. I'll adjust my review once the game is fully released or I become aware of changes to shift early access development focus from PvP to PvE.
It has been almost 5 months since release, and there have been no substantial updates to the game, though there have been plenty of balance and minor UI updates, mostly catered toward PvP. While balancing via PvP first and adding PvE content later might be easier, you still have to give something to PvE players in the meantime. Right now, the AI in PvE is abysmal, it cheats because it won't utilize various mechanics in the game. Also, there is still no co-op team play, and the writing in the campaigns is mediocre. Where are interesting, unique characters like Gelu, whom people still remember today? The music is also very generic. Why did you start working with Romero only to reject his unique tracks? Heroes music is anything but generic fantasy tunes. Where are the organs, the choirs, and the soul? In general, as a PvE experience, it's very lackluster right now. P.S maybe I'm dumb, but the map selection legend makes no sense and it's hard to udnerstand what it means. It also doesn't showcase any needed information, like how many castles each faction will have when starting. We like to start playing with one, and majority of maps have at least 2, or even more nearby, so we have to try other maps until we are able to find what we're looking for.
