Get it on sale. The base game is good, enjoyed that. It was too easy though. Endless Ragnarök is apply named as it's a never ending disaster. They did away with the excellent story cinematics. Nothing is worth the grind they expect you to put in for one character, much less all of them. And, of course, the RNG will ensure your time is fully wasted. It's annoying, tedious, and quickly becomes boring. End game challenges are just high DPS checks with a gimmick. So, you really don't have any options if you want to be viable and you're pretty much forced to spec every character the same. The dev's answer to the "too easy" problem was to just give you a short timer, blind you with effects (even at minimum settings), zoom the camera in to make sure the "leap all over the place" bosses are off screen, and run gimmicks like the boss goes invulnerable or just flies around out of reach until the timer runs out. I managed to salvage some enjoyment out of it by running mods to eliminate the RNG and significantly reduce the grind. So, I get to build the characters out and try out their kits. But, they just turn into the same "max dps" setup as the rest. Expect cheap shots, cheap gimmicks, and an obscene time investment. Don't expect much agency and certainly no respect for your time. The 20-30 hours I spent on the base game was enjoyable. Everything after that is just a testament how stupidly stubborn I am.
Look, I don't like anime, and I cringed a lot at the poor writing and painful dialogue BUT I'm recommending this purely on the strength of the gameplay, as it truly made up for everything else being so cliche. The combat here is genuinely some of the best in the action RPG space right now: every character has a fully distinct move set and playstyle, and boss fights are legitimately cinematic, huge scale encounters that keep escalating well past the main campaign. If you think the story mode felt too easy, that's intentional, the real challenge is in the post-game, where high-rank quests scale enemies up to level 200+ and can flatten an underprepared party in one hit. My favourite characters are Tweyen, Id, Fediel, and Beatrix. Tweyen's ranged kit with her lock-on Ultrasight system rewards precision and target management vs just mashing buttons. Id has one of the flashiest kits in the game once his Physalis dragon transformation kicks in, it fully changes his move set into something way more aggressive. Plus he is a little Nero coded, can't go wrong with that. Beatrix is close-combat and skill-based around her Delta Clock buff timing, so there's real decision-making even in a "just hit things" character. Add Fediel to the mix and this is a party that's fun to master and prepared for (almost) everything. Story's an afterthought, cliche and bland as they come/ Just go in expecting a Monster Hunter/FFXIV-combat hybrid with anime dressing, not an impactful narrative, and you'll have a great time. In my case it's 100+ hours of great time, despite disliking the anime style.
こんにちは、ジェネラル・ケノービ ----- It seems that with the release of the new expansion, my previous review was wiped out, so let me say it again: This game is amazing, and the new expansion has made it even better. It’s not only great for old Granblue fans, but also much more welcoming to people who are new to the franchise. We finally got cross-play, along with fantastic netcode that makes matchmaking much smoother. The grind has also become significantly easier so much that old players are actually jealous of the new players now lol. Granblue Fantasy Relink gives me that old school gaming vibe, especially the feeling of the seventh generation of consoles. It’s genuinely addictive, and it feels like this game was made by actual gamers who understand what makes games fun, rather than by businessmen who know nothing about the medium 💀 ------ If you’re into action RPGs/JRPGs, GBFR is absolutely worth giving a shot 💯
