Full Moon is a small-scale adventure game that draws heavily from the traditions of classic top-down exploration titles while developing a playful identity of its own. Developed and published by AK Sommerville, the game places players in control of Dot Vine, a witch who sets out on a mission to find and kill a werewolf. Despite that potentially sinister premise, the experience is considerably lighter and more whimsical than it initially sounds. Dot is presented as a good-natured witch, and the combination of fantasy creatures, magic, colorful pixel graphics, and unusual humor creates an adventure that feels more charming than threatening. The structure is clearly influenced by old-fashioned action-adventure games, particularly those built around exploring interconnected areas, discovering useful objects, solving environmental problems, and gradually understanding how different pieces of the world fit together. Full Moon does not rely heavily on modern conveniences to guide players through every objective. Instead, exploration itself is treated as an important part of the challenge. Players search for treasure, uncover secret spells, encounter unusual clues, and determine where collected information might become useful later. This gives the adventure an investigative quality alongside its fantasy elements. One of the most revealing recommendations from the developer is that players may want to keep paper and a pencil nearby. Certain clues can be obscure enough that remembering or writing them down becomes part of the experience. This approach deliberately recalls an earlier era of adventure games when players frequently created their own notes instead of relying on automatic journals and objective trackers. It can be rewarding because discoveries feel more personal when the player is responsible for recognizing connections. At the same time, people accustomed to comprehensive quest logs and constant guidance may find this design somewhat demanding. Inventory management is intentionally straightforward. Dot can equip a single item at a time, encouraging players to consider which tool is appropriate for the current situation rather than simply carrying an enormous selection of immediately accessible abilities. The concept fits naturally with the game's Zelda-inspired foundation. Items become more than collectibles because they potentially provide solutions to obstacles encountered during exploration. Experimenting with equipment and revisiting suspicious locations can therefore become an important part of progression. Dot's principal weapon is particularly memorable because she does not receive the kind of sword, axe, or magical staff normally associated with fantasy heroes. Instead, she fights using a feather. It is an amusingly unconventional choice that communicates the game's personality remarkably well. Full Moon repeatedly takes recognizable fantasy concepts and presents them in a less serious manner. A witch hunting a werewolf could easily form the foundation of a grim action game, but the feather weapon immediately establishes that this adventure is interested in humor and eccentricity rather than violent spectacle. The world is presented through colorful 2D pixel graphics and a top-down perspective. This visual format works well with the gameplay because it keeps locations readable while complementing the game's retro influences. Dungeon crawling, exploration, treasure hunting, magical abilities, and nonlinear progression all fit comfortably within this presentation. The game does not attempt to impress through graphical complexity. Its attraction instead comes from discovering what is hidden around the environment and figuring out how seemingly insignificant information or objects might contribute to progress. Nonlinear exploration is another element that gives Full Moon some welcome freedom. Rather than presenting itself purely as a sequence of predetermined encounters, the game encourages curiosity. Secret spells and treasures provide additional reasons to examine locations carefully instead of simply moving toward the next obvious destination. This can create satisfying moments when exploration produces something genuinely useful. The design rewards players who inspect their surroundings and remember places that appear inaccessible or suspicious during an earlier visit. The game's technical simplicity also makes sense in relation to its retro presentation. Full Moon has extremely modest hardware requirements and occupies very little storage space, allowing it to run on comparatively basic computers. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, broadening its accessibility beyond a single desktop platform. It is designed as a single-player experience, which suits the slower process of exploring, experimenting with items, recording clues, and solving problems at an individual pace. Full Moon's strongest quality is the consistency of its personality. Dot Vine, the werewolf hunt, hidden magic, obscure clues, treasure searching, one-item equipment system, feather weapon, pixel-art presentation, and old-school exploration all contribute to the same deliberately modest vision. Nothing about the game suggests that it is trying to disguise itself as a massive adventure. Its appeal comes from concentrating on a smaller set of ideas and embracing the quirks associated with classic game design. That philosophy naturally produces limitations. Players expecting sophisticated combat, extensive character development, cinematic storytelling, enormous environments, elaborate equipment systems, or modern navigation assistance may find Full Moon comparatively sparse. Its reliance on observation and memory can occasionally slow progression, especially when the significance of an earlier clue is not immediately obvious. The need to make personal notes will delight some players while frustrating others. These qualities make Full Moon somewhat specialized, but they also prevent it from becoming another heavily streamlined adventure where every solution is immediately highlighted. As a free game, Full Moon becomes especially easy to recommend to players interested in unusual independent projects. AK Sommerville has created an adventure that understands the appeal of classic exploration without treating nostalgia as its only defining feature. Its strange sense of humor, friendly witch protagonist, magical secrets, nonlinear discovery, and wonderfully ridiculous feather weapon provide enough personality to distinguish it from more conventional retro-inspired games. Players willing to explore patiently, experiment with items, remember unusual information, and accept minimal guidance are likely to get the most from the experience. Full Moon is not a grand or technically ambitious adventure, but its focused design and eccentric charm make it an enjoyable tribute to an older style of exploration-driven gaming. Rating: 6/10
