You can get someone completely new to playing a functional neutral game in about 60 seconds. You can refine that neutral game forever. That's this game in a nutshell. Footsies is the perfect fighting game to dabble in. You don't need to put in serious time to get to nontrivial depth, the "real game" that can be elusive when learning a fighting game, yet there's a deep enough game for you to grind if you so choose. Execution is pretty much as simple as you could ask for yet you'll find that there are things you mess up -- whiff punishing with walk into Kick without accidentally getting Knee, doing Uppercut in place with as little movement as possible, etc. Parry is a whole thing unto itself and is probably one of the best thought-out parries in a fighting game. I always recommend this game as a fun side-game to play every so often with a friend. It plays well online and is a blast offline. I really recommend bringing this game to offline events; it's one of the best ways to get players that don't play similar fighting games to finally be able to play on relatively even footing. Footsies is a testament to just how simple a complete and enjoyable fighting game can be, and I recommend it to everyone.

This game is pretty good on fundamentials but the inputs are bizarre coming from an actual fighting game background. eg: 5p (standing +attack) = 2k (low kick) 4p/6p (backwards/forward + attack) = 5p (standing punch) In order to play i basically had to unmap my brain to the most basic of controls before i could play what is the most boring fight game imaginable. Can't say it's worth it for how basic the game is. If you aren't already versed in fighting games than it's porbably a decent introduction. For those which have already ran the gauntlet on a proper fighting game this provides nothing of value. It's something i'd imagine would make more sense as a free webgame than a game you'd buy.

People who like this game promise that it will teach you neutral. In fact this game is ass. Controls are awkward AF. You have 5X that gives you a kick and 6X and 4X are command normals that give you a knee move. Having 4X feels horrible. If you back up and want to do a kick, the character just does a knee. The hurboxes are horrendous too. They are MASSIVELY extended on both attacks your character has for the ease of whiff punishing I assume, but it's just unintuitive.
Unlike most fighting games where admittedly whether I'm playing against a human or the CPU, I tend to default to "What if I just dash in as close as possible and hit buttons?" or if that doesn't work "What if I just [i]jump[/i] in and hit buttons?" or if that doesn't work "RANDOM SHORYUKEN!" this one's mechanics force me to, like, actually have to stop and try to play the game well if I want to win, and it's kind of a novel concept in my mind that winning involve actually knowing what you're doing, and I don't think ever before this have I actually gone out of my way to look for my opponent's normals so I can whiff punish them, say. Honestly, if I played this game for an extended period, it would probably be good for me. The online community seems to be gone at this point, and I wasn't able to get a game against anybody, but I feel even just the stuff against the CPU is probably worth playing for its own sake. Maybe it's just my complete lack of any skill at footsies in fighting games, and for all I know maybe someone actually good at this would say "Oh, no, the CPU is worthless", but I feel even playing against the CPU requires me to make a genuine effort to not play dumb in order to beat it, and with most fighting games it's "Eh, I'll do what I want, it's not like it actually affects the outcome, and ultimately whether or not I win this interaction is totally up to the whim of the machine and whether or not it simply allows me to win or decides to do whatever thing exactly counters whatever I did", but here the Whiff Punisher CPU especially (I.e. this game has a couple different CPU's in it meant to mimic different playstyles, and this is one of them) makes me go "No, I can't just throw out nonsense, if I do that I will get punished and I will [i]die.[/i] I have to actually know WHY I'm hitting a button here", and it genuinely feels, like, meaningful to play against.
this is a quaint little game you can play with your friends. beware, though. you can't crouch block, so it won't actually teach you footsies
Short review and additional information: Probably one of the simplest, if not the simplest, fighting games out there and a great way to learn solid fundamentals found in most 2D fighters.
