About
The foghorns wake you, violent as ever. Another passenger has come to cross the fog.
In the dream you wander through the pines, and come upon a body. Innocent and young, murdered in cold blood. By your hand or another? Makes no difference now.
Foghorns Drown is a short psychological thriller, inspired by Silent Hill, Twin Peaks, and Mouthwashing. You play as a ferryman, bringing passengers across a foggy lake to a town drenched in mystery and folklore. The old ferryman has disappeared, and a murder has been committed.
How to tell real from dream when the dead speak again?
Physics-based interactions to open doors, drag objects, and operate the crank of the ferry to pull it along a rusty old chain. The foghorns have little patience, the ferry must move.
A rich, detailed narrative told through environmental clues, dialogue with the townsfolk, and surreal visions woven into your experience. The fog speaks to those who listen.
Psychological horror that escalate as truth begins to blur, and strange old tales begin to reveal themselves to you. Something in the water demands its toll.
Who is the killer? Why did the old ferryman disappear? Solve the mystery, before it's too late.

Exceptional experience. well worth the 1.5 hours playtime, went through it twice and got all achievments too.
Yeahhhh, look, I love weird horror, even short ones, especially fi the vibes are on point, which the vibes are solid here. But like...this feels like a prologue section at best. Fact is, that of my 3 hour playtime, probably almost 2hrs of that was me alt tabbed doing other stuff and having dinner, and even then I've finished it (hell I've been told the demo's 40 minutes, and the whole game's maybe 90 minutes at best). It feels like the dev started off with this cool eldrictch horror through the lense of a small village and just got bored or something. It starts off understandable enough, small village, folks seem to be having nightmares a lot, there's something about "the Citadel" and tar, the village's priest has fallen ill after an incident, something's afoot. Aannnnnd then it just keeps jumping ahead, slow build up, oh bored now, jump to the next seemingly nonsensical bit. After a bit of the game's incredibly short run time it feels like you've been invited to watch an episode midway through Twin Peaks with no context, then your mate turns it off after the first comercial break and asks you what did you think. I don't wanna ♥♥♥♥ on a small indie dev making intriguing little horror titles, but this was just kinda disapointing overall.

While it did not reach the expectations I had for it narratively, it did deliver an interesting experience, although the biggest highlight of the game is the visuals. It is truly a beautiful horror game in the sense that a lot of thought was put into the visual aspect (how cutscenes are presented, the color palette used, etc). That along with a good choice of audio tracks makes for a very cinematic game. Now on the other hand, the narrative was just starting to get interesting when suddenly it was over, you're revealed the whole deal without really having solved anything or given a chance to put any pieces together yourself. Before playing it I was putting it up there with other games like No One Lives Under The Lighthouse, but now I'd say that is only true for the cinematic aspect of the game. Also, I played on release day and it seems like there where some bugs. One of which really broke the pacing of the game for me, basically at some point of the game I went a little off track (chose to sleep instead of doing what the game expects you to) and that actually triggered a bug that set me back almost to the beginning of the game. Not cool to be punished for being curious and attempting alternate routes in this type of games. But hopefuly this little details will be fixed, and I will update my review when they are.
I played the demo and it was 20m of the same game that lasted 60m for me. It is a shame, because atmosphere was fantastic, but the game itself overall is rushed and also expensive, for what it is. It starts very well, and then at midpoint just rushes towards the end leaving you disappointed for what it could have been.
Some really good and carefully crafted atmosphere. Not a particularly long game but the narrative and its presentation is fairly strong. It lacks a bit of the guttural punch that other low-fi horror titles like Mouthwashing have, but the murder mystery element is still really engaging. Solid recommendation even if it isn't going to be something I consider a "classic".
一般般的叙事游戏,恐怖元素不多。部分蒙太奇的的切换很不错,但剧情到后半实在是太神神叨叨了,看不懂
The game's soundtrack pairs beautifully with the stunning visuals. I found myself taking screenshots of many areas within my 2 hours of gameplay. The game's visuals and atmosphere remind me of the show Midnight Mass, the fishing hamlet from Bloodborne's DLC and Robert Eggers' The Witch. I loved the cinematography during the cutscenes, very dramatic. The gameplay has some interesting mechanics for interacting with items, though they can be a bit clunky at times. I wish exploration was rewarded a little more; the map is actually quite big, please let me discover more secrets! The occasional invisible wall took me out of the immersion a bit but eh, I guess it carries that old PS1 charm. I find the story towards the end of the game quite difficult to follow. All in all a beautiful experience.
Foghorns Drown is a short and sweet atmospheric psychological horror game with a great art direction and a beautiful OST. There are some genuinely beautiful and scary moments, and the world is very interesting, leaves me wanting for more.
I've been watching Foghorns Drown for awhile now and absolutely had to buy it on day one. I also managed to play through the whole game without using a guide at all, which really helped engage me into the game by not breaking it up at all! Positives: - The atmosphere is incredible, I love the Robert Eggers vibe mixed with Pathologic and a small drop of famous horror games such as Silent Hill (the fog!) - I adored the sound design. Such as how when it rains your feet trudge through the sodden ground differently to when it is sunny. The music helps increase tension and set the mood. - I loved the soundtrack. - There are some extremely well made scares, such as, and without spoilers, one where you use an axe but it's not wood you're chopping. - I liked how if you exit the game you can continue at the exact moment you were playing at. This was especially helpful after the game crashed (twice!) Mixed: - I appreciate the attempt to differentiate between the characters, but due to the game's short runtime and the lack of unique character models it was difficult to keep up with them all. I know Karl didn't like going to Church and preferred fishing, and there were the two Churchmen and the Innkeeper as well as Agnes and her daughter and the Citadel Doctor and his apprentice. I know it may seem like I mentioned a lot but there were other characters and apart from the one's I've mentioned I cannot recall even one distinct thing about any of them. - The game teases us with interesting lore, such as the unique poisonous fish found in Foghorns Drown and the Citadel. But the information is lacking. - I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending, and I think some of the emotional weight of the character's sins is lost on the player as we didn't interact with them enough. Negatives: - The runtime is too short in my opinion. There's a lot more they could have done with this game, and easing us into the horror with extra tasks and getting to know the characters would have built tension more effectively and padded out the runtime, whilst also letting us know the characters more! - A few bugs and glitches on launch. I crashed twice, had wood vanish after I chopped it and according to some on the forums if you go to sleep at one stage instead of giving a certain character his coffee the game upsets and puts you back nearly to the start of the game! 7/10: Very atmospheric game, with amazing sound design and a unique pseudo-PS1 feel. The vibe the developers were going for has definitely been achieved. However, the short runtime, lack of characterisation and bugs and glitches will hopefully be addressed in the future. A full walkthrough and review will be on my channel either today or tomorrow! I'm really looking forward to future updates!! https://www.youtube.com/@TheHPSauce
